Match Thread: Southampton FC vs Wolves

Raul scores again

By Wolves
February 11 2023

After the exhilarating and surprisingly comprehensive win over Liverpool last Saturday, Wolves face the challenge of gaining more points at bottom of the table Southampton today- a team against whom Raul Jimenez has scored five times.

Wolves travel to the South Coast home of the Saints looking for another three points to lift them even further from the relegation zone, and perhaps commit their opponents to even more uncertainty, after a week in which the future of their fairly recently appointed head coach Nathan Jones has been called into question by their fans.

Wolves on the other hand have spent the week celebrating the most positive impact Julen Lopetegui has had on his team, together with his new recruits brought into the squad during January. Craig Dawson had a debut he could only have dreamed of, providing a solid defence alongside Max Kilman and scoring Wolves' second goal, whilst Mario Lamina brought some belligerence and strength into our midfield which has long been overdue. Pablo Sarabia unexpectedly took up a central striker position and provided the pass from which Hee-Chan Hwang scored in-off Matip.

However the word coming out of the training ground this week is that it is a squad game, and changes can be expected at any time, so all players must be ready to step up to the challenge. The word from fans across social media is to once again acknowledge the fantastic performance and effort shown by our captain Ruben Neves, especially in the way he took his goal, and has renewed calls for the club to do whatever is needed to retain him this summer. Pedro Neto scored a superb goal at St Mary's a couple of seasons ago, and the good news is that he is nearing a return to fitness, as is Boubakar Traore. Mario Lamina will be assessed prior to kick off to see is he's fit for a return to his old club, whilst it's estimated Hwang will be on the side lines for the next five weeks with his hamstring injury.

Today's game will kick off at 3pm and will not be screened before BBC's Match of the Day. Our referee will be the Australian Jarred Gillett whilst Paul Tierney - who had an excellent game officiating last week's match - will be on VAR duty.

This board will endeavour to provide regular updates on the game for those otherwise unable to follow it, and members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation

One change for today's game with Joao Moutinho coming in to replace the injured Hwang. The Wolves App shows it as a 4-2-3-1 formation with Cunha the loan striker and Nunes, Joao & Serabia in behind him. The really interesting news is to see new-boy Joao Gomes and Pedro Neto on the bench!

Semedo goes over the ball and catches Perraud’s right shin & gets a yellow card which will no doubt lead to increased attacks down our right flank.

All of a sudden Lamina is shown a second yellow card than a red. Neves argues the toss but no point. Appears it could be for dissent

Cunha brought down & hurt by Maitland- Nikes who also gets a yellow card!!

Bednarek gets a shot away from the centre of our area but deflected for a corner. Onuschu is 6ft 7in tall and is aimed for in every Saints attack - quite a handful

Cheshire wolf

Not a lot of quality on display so far. 3=added minutes to play

Cheshire wolf

Good break forward by Mateus but no final product. Half time whistle goes and we are losing by the one goal of the game so far. A strange half with 5 yellow cards and a red card already. Poor quality game from what I have seen, and Wolves have achieved very little co-ordinated play and certainly no shots on target. Saints goal was a scrappy affair and went in off the post - just what they needed. It will be interesting to see what JL decides to do with both full backs on yellow cards

Wait till you see his goal tonight - so coolly taken.
Referee gives a delayed free kick to Adams just outside our area - again JWP to step up. They try a clever move but fail

Nathan Jones looks tearful as the final whistle goes and Wolves move back into 15th place and 3 points ahead of West Ham. The second half was so much better than the first after Adama came on and have us an attacking force. We never gave up, earned an own goal, them our new boy Gomes scored the sort of goal we hoped for. Just what we needed!!

A second half full of character, no one let the side down. The better side by far and full of fight. Adama made the difference and gave us an attacking option perhaps we had lacked during the first half. Pressed superbly for the equaliser and our new boy showed his class with a fantastic second. Whilst Traore was effective I don't recall Sarabia being involved much and was surprised that Neto wasn't called upon at some point. Neves led by example, tirelessly got himself around the pitch and dictated our play.
Well done JLo.

Wow. What a scrap and a fabulous result. Goal from Gomes on his debut, good work from Diego and Adama, and no sign of Nathan Collins (benched again) or Raul Jimenez (wonder if he will ever really be back). Not sure why Podence wasn’t around; is he injured?
And Dawson appears to have been quite a signing.
Not time to breathe yet but getting closer

Fanstastic 3 points with only 10 men.
Red card looked a joke but it doesn't really surprise me anymore, most of the refs in the premier league are either poor or maybe corrupt!
Great debut goal by gomes that will do his confidence no harm.
Well done boys that's a massive win.

Apparently Podence had a groin injury shortly before kick off and was unable to be part of the squad

Amazing win. I thought we'd blown it in the first half, but full credit to the 10 battlers, and that quality pass into the net from Gomes.

Regardless of not being the player he was, Costa comes over as a great squad member and a positive influence around the Mol.

I see Jones has been sacked. Losing to Wolves seems like the kiss of death!

Always sad when a manager is sacked, though some of the recent comments from Nathan Jones were odd to say the least.

Anyway, what an astonishing win yesterday, quite brilliant to be honest. I have only watched the MOTD highlights and didn’t follow the match, other than my mates phone updates, however what on earth happened with the ref’s decision to send off Lemina for a second yellow? Absolutely pathetic. Given those circumstances is the Bruno era, 1 down, 10 men on the pitch, it would have been a certainty to lose. And yet this Wolves side mustered a battling performance, especially in the second half to actually take the game to the faltering Saints. Sounds like the the subs made the difference too. Lovely winner.

Extremely happy and vital in terms of the league table with Bournemouth to come next weekend.

As said, I missed the match completely yesterday, I had a late call to go to Argyle v Pompey which was a terrific game 3-1 to The Greens! 4th time I’ve seen them this season, they have Nigel Lonwijk from us on loan. Not a bad player, a couple of minor errors but overall very sound indeed - will be interesting to see what our approach will be with him. Leaving the ground, I had a chat with a Pompey fan, though defeated on the day, he was delighted that as well as an ex resident of Pompey, I was also a Wolves fan and that we’d managed to win yesterday …… in his words “send the ffing scummers down”!!
