Match Thread: West Ham United vs Wolves

Kilman's Challenge

By Wolves
October 1 2022

Wolves travel to the first of this month's London based meetings today for a very interesting away fixture at the London Stadium. After both teams suffered defeats before the international break, West Ham and Wolves sit third and fourth from bottom of the League respectively, having only scored three goals each so far, and Wolves will be keen to end the day with West Ham remaining below them.

The thrust of today from Wolves persepective is definitely about scoring goals and winning points, but will essentially be about team selection in light of the high rate of unavailability of players for Bruno Lage to choose from. The only parts of the team where he doesn't have selection problems are in goal and midfield. Following his sending off for a calamitous challenge on Jack Grealish, Nathan Collins will be missing from defence for the next three games. Bruno will no doubt have to put added responsibility on to Max Kilman to marshall the defence. It remains to be seen whether he will move to the right side with the marginally more experienced Toti Gomez slotting into the left side, or whether newboy Jerson Marquez will be given his fuill debut on the right. There has even been talk of Jonny Castro Otto slotting into defence, with Semedo back in place at wing back. The other question will be whether there is a role in the team for loan signing Boubacar Traore in defence or midfield.

Up front he has an equally difficult dilemna, with Sasa Kalajdzic now out for several months, Raul Jimenez still rehabilitating from a groin injury, and Hee Chan Hwang returning from International duty with an adductor muscle strain. It is largely presumed to be too early for new signing Diego Costa to make a start, but we can perhaps expect to see an apearance from the bench for him. This will mean a striking line-up of Guedes, Podence, Neto or Traore - who, after being unavailable for the Man City game due to injury is now fit and ready to start.

West Ham may be without Antonio as he played for Jamaica on Wednesday, but they have the Internationally in-form Scamacca ready to replace him. Club Captain Declan Rice also played two 90 minute games for England during the break so it could be wondered how fit he will be to start. Earlier this year Wolves suffered a 1 - 0 defeat at West Ham with Thomas Soucek scoring an scrappy goal, but he has strggled to score so far this season.

The game will kick off at 5:30pm and will be screened by Sky TV. Our match referee will be Paul Tierney with Peter Bankes on VAR Duty.

This board will endeavour to provide regular updates on the progress of the match for those unable to follow it, and members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation.

It really is time to get some points on the board and no better team, currently, to do it against than West Ham. Despite out injuries etc. there should be no further excuses.

Just one change in the starting Xl with Semedo replacing Collins and Jonny slotting into the back 4. Personally I'm amazed that Lage hasn't the necessary faith in our squad to play a recognised full back as a replacement when needed. Same three start up front, presumably with little Podence playing as a 'false nine' again until Costa gets a chance. Line-up:

4ft 5 podence as the central player in a front 3.. utterly ridiculous

Cheshire wolf
01/10/2022 17:30
It’s looking like Neves in the back four, Jonny at left back and RAN on the left wing with Pod upfront. West Ham have a strong team out for sure. Here we go

Neves in the back 4 - ridiculous

Too much passing at the back, but ultimately we break & Pod gets a good shot away which Fabianski has to put over for a corner.

Cheshire wolf
01/10/2022 17:40
Jonny forces Fabianski into a save with a long shot for a corner. Nines stepping into Neves’ boots in midfield well and we’re taking the game to Utd

Scamacca breaks & shoots but offside

Neves gets an early yellow card for a foul on Bowen which rules him out of the next game as it’s his 5th of the season already!

Ball rebounds off Jose but cleared by Jonny just in time

Game stopped as Neto down injured - concern about his left ankle.

Not looking good for Neto to continue as he’s still being treated on sideline

Guedes puts a good free kick in but Jonny just can’t reach it. Now Joao gets a yellow card

Neto back on but still limping ? The logic behind that move? Scamacca smashes free kick high over the bar. Adama replacing Neto

Ivybridge Wolf
01/10/2022 17:56
That looks a bad one for Neto and yet the bench sent him back onto the pitch?

Could be out for many weeks looking at his reaction

Jonny is having a poor game in his defending so far. RAN avoids responsibility for a shot when he should have smashed it at the goal.

Pod gets a shot away from outside the area but straight at Fabianski. 4 added minutes to play

Referee eventually gives a free kick to Utd after some dubious tackling by Nunes but it’s wasted.

Half time whistle and we trail Utd after a well taken goal. Some good work and pressing by Wolves but presenting little danger in the area. Costa looks keen to join the fray and it will be interesting to see if he does and what he can do.

Nunes has that haunted look. Unsurprising when we play all this pretty knockabout stuff but only Podence seems willing to shoot. RAN and Semedo very gifted ‘sideways’ players. And Adama has been good on those very very few occasions when someone had passed to him. The way this season is going our new hot-shot 33 year old striker will get stretchered off long before he touches the hallowed WV1 turf.

Cheshire wolf
01/10/2022 18:40
No further changes as we start the 2nd half. Pod earns a corner from which Neves tries a shot but it’s poor. Neto sitting in the stand with an immobilising boot on his left foot - not looking good for him.

Cheshire wolf
01/10/2022 18:42
Adama goes close but just wide. Rice gets a yellow card for a foul on Joao. Adama looks threatening but just runs out of space

More poor defending by Wolves and Bowen takes his chance to bury the ball

First chance for Costa after a super cross from Adama but he heads well wide.

Good effort by Campbell but just wide. Wolves fans were singing “You don’t know what you’re doing” to Bruno when he made his last substitutions - I tend to agree!!

Neves is viewed as the second coming, granted he isnt a CB but his final ball in many games is abysmal. It's no surprise a top club hasn't come in for him

Cheshire wolf
01/10/2022 19:27
Game is fizzling out now as we play 3 added minutes. And it finishes with another defeat at West Ham. A poor performance by Wolves against a generally average side, and which sees us slip into the bottom three.
Chelsea away up next without Neves and probably Neto. Bruno Lage still fails to convince me that he has a plan, and I think Neves is wasted in defence when we should have players in our squad capable of stepping in to cover suspension or injury.
West Ham 2 Wolves 0

FT

Wet Spam 2-0 Lacklustre Wolves 0

Massive negatives all pver the pitch and management as we flop into the bottom 3. On this form, there is only one way we’re going and have to sort it asasp.

N fight or backbone. I pity our fans who went down to the East End tonight.

The only pluses for me were Costa, Adama and Kilman.

WFT is Neves doing at centre back. We ship Coady up to the Mersey, have a CB suspension and rather than replace like for like Bruno puts Neves in there.

This side has no spirit at present. No good saying we have this and that in terms of quality players, the passion Wolves had as a squad has seemingly evaporated.

Very, very concerning.

Will Bruno survive this?

Hopefully lages last game in charge. It's obvious he's lost the dressing room. No passion and no fight. The players ain't got a scooby how he wants to play. Is there even a game plan because I'm struggling to see one. What do they do on the training pitch, the set plays are truly awful. Lages time is up this can't go on or we will be back in the championship. He's killed this team, with the money spent it's just not good enough. Worrying times.

Lupy
01/10/2022 19:56
A healthy helping of the same old pretty passing, backwards, sideways, anywhere but forwards. Possession is one thing but hitting the back of the net is somewhat more important and we don't look as if we are going to do that in a month of Sundays. Bruno has to go, and soon, before we are cut adrift, no more time for excuses or promises of better things to come, he needs to be out of the door on Monday if not before. The potential that is in this squad is being squandered by a manager who consistently plays individuals out of position, fails to make sensible substitutions and seems to have little credibility left in terms of man management. Time's up Bruno.

Lupy

Across various forums and discussion sites the majority view is that Bruno needs to go asap so it seems that he has lost the support of the fans as well as the squad. Comments by Ruddy and Coady suggested that all is not well in the dressing room which doesn't really reflect the "one pack " mantra from the Nuno era. I am of the view that severe damage has been done and the rot needs to be stopped immediately. Just a matter of who to replace him with.

Ivybridge Wolf
02/10/2022 11:52
It is a matter of time and on that basis, Bruno should be relived of duties now. There’s no point keeping the agony going, otherwise he’ll be being judged on a match by match basis. We have Chelsea next. If Bruno stays and If by a miracle we get a result at Stamford Bridge, he continues to limp on. What really worries me is the home fixture v Forest. It is more than conceivable we could do a Wolves special and scrape a draw or lose in a bore fest. What would the reaction of Molineux be then?

It’s a sad reflection on how things have developed, nevertheless the unity of fans, players and club is now on life support following the Nuno era. Some across the net are suggesting it’s already dead.

As for team selections at present, mystifying bordering on laughable. How bad must the Collins replacements be (in Bruno’s eyes) to put Neves as CB? Is the Toti that I saw play last season now unpickable?

I too have read about the Coady and Ruddy comments, nevertheless the football is the temperature gauge and that’s approaching sub zero at present. If those reported comments are true, this really demonstrates a lack of leadership from Bruno. At the very least, on the pitch, the players are utterly consistent in their inability to deliver Bruno’s vision.

I was at the FA Cup 3rd round capitulation at the then non league Luton Town. Fan’s were baying for blood, ‘you’ll be sacked in the morning’ was to chant to Solbakken (in reality he was gone before the end of 5 Live’s ‘Sports Report’ the same evening). I vented my anger for sure but refrained from the sacking chant. For me, this situation is quite different. Without ever being his greatest fan (just can’t find anything to connect with the man), I’ve always wanted Bruno to ignite this team and do well, I’ve gone along the line that this season is different to the ending of last etc etc, however in reality Bruno’s tenure has merely meandered and limped to a nature end. Make no mistake however, I don’t think Fosun are innocent in this demise either.

It looks like Bruno urged Fosun to let him put his own squad together, with full leadership control, and the results would come. I presume a strong leadership figure in the dressing room like Coady would be perceived as a barrier to the changes wanted to impose, and rather than work with him to build the new direction, Bruno took the easy fix and shipped him out.

Now that Bruno got his way he hasn't been able to make it work, and his efforts at team selection, tactics, game management during the match etc. are becoming increasingly lost and confusing because he seems out of ideas already.

He really should go now for his own sake because the project has failed. Gawd knows who replaces him, because the squad and team culture is so Portuguese influenced.
