Match Thread: Chelsea vs Wolves

Another real test

By Wolves
May 7 2022

After a dreadful few weeks in the history of Wolves culminating with last week's dire performance at home to Brighton, Wolves today face the somewhat daunting task of travelling to Chelsea, just as it has been announce the London Club have a new owner!!

Wolves coach Bruno Lage will not be travelling to today's game as he has tested positive for Covid-19, but he will no doubt still be involved in the selection and substitutions as the match progresses, whilst it appears goalkeeping coach Tony Roberts will control Wolves operations at Stamford Bridge.

Word coming from the Wolves camp suggests Ruben Neves will be fit to play, whilst Nelson Semedo and Max Kilman are unlikely to play again this season, and Daniel Podence is still sidelined with his unexplained 'foot problem'. Many fans will be hoping to see Pedro Neto return to the starting Xl to replace the hapless Hwang Hee Chan, and for perhaps Chiquinho to be given a start on the right side in place of Trincao. Fabio Silva may retain their confidence in the striker role or Raul Jimenez may be recalled, but for whoever it is our failure to register a goal in the past 3 games needs to be rectified.

A change could also be called for at the back following the dreadful defensive play last week, and perhaps it is time to give Toti Gomes another shot at left sided centre back instead of Romain Saiss. The likelihood is that we are going to finish no higher than 8th place this season, so perhaps this is the ideal time to give some of our youngsters a chance to prove themselves, rather than persist with the tried and tested players as Nuno did last season when he had nothing to play for.

Chelsea have had a difficult time of late and will feel hurt after losing at Everton last week, and with the news of their impending new ownership will surely be looking for a very positive outcome today.

The game will kick off at 3pm and will not be screened by any TV channels. Our referee will be Peter Bankes - who was also in charge for our recent trip to Newcastle - supported by Robert Jones on VAR duty.

This board will endeavour to follow a good stream if possible and provide regular updates on the progress of the match. Members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation.

I wouldn't mind seeing Toti brought in and seeing what Chiquinho can do but that's because certain players have been out of form or seem to be just not good enough. I don't think we will finish above 8th and after this weekend I suspect the season will be over but as we stand right now there is still something to play for, 3 points off European qualification with a game in hand.
The way we've been playing lately I can't see it happening but the fact that we are still so close to West Ham shows that they can't be doing much better and the club would be wrong to just throw the towel in.
All that being said, and I hope I'm wrong, I do suspect that after the weekend we will have nothing to play for.

No sense of adventure in the selection for today's starting Xl, as Neto is the only change - mind you he does replace Hwang which is good news!! . Line-up:

Wolves should have won that match today ... pure and simple. We scored 2, it coulda shoulda been 4 or 5 but yet again finishing practice is required at Compton.

Don't you love football though?

Bloody saft challenge from Saiss for the penalty, surprised the ref didn't see it from the off. 2 minutes later Lukaku consigned our afternoon to the dustbin ...... or did it??!!

Then after chaos on the bench, the subs were made and things started to change positively. Despite the fact we might have score 3 or 4 at that point, the energy returned to the side - better pressing, passing, pressure and movement.

Hwang should have scored, Raul had a great chance, Trincao then stepped up for a fine, fine goal, then he bloody well missed another, Chiq came on, ran at the Chelsea defence, injury time - still we press when in possession, 6 minutes added but in the 7th minute (correctly over the 6 minutes with more stoppages and subs) a great piece of build up play, the ball shifted to the right wing, Chiq, an absolutely sumptuous cross, where was our centre forward to score ...... err, no it was Conor Coady (guilty of a wayward pass for the 2nd Chelsea goal) who was under real pressure, but he wanted it more ..... 6 yards out, back of the net.

TERRIFIC.

Back from the dead, very mcuh deserved, it'll feel a bit like a win I'm sure ...... but we shoudl have won this match today. Out of jail for sure but a great feeling to see that equaliser.

UTW!!! Love it!

How the hell did that happen?
Up until the last 10 mins, Sa kept us in it.
Rode our luck a bit in the first half, although the offside goal was the correct decision.
Two poor goals to concede, Saiss's challenge for the penalty was stupidity.
Very impressed with Chiquinho and would definitely like to see more of him and with Podence injured and Trincao, despite a fantastic goal, and Hwang not impressing, I don't see why not.
Out-played Chelsea in the last 10 mins., a pity it was only 10 mins., and fantastic for Conor at the end.

Only saw the second half which turned out to be a game of two quarters. Very poor showing to gift Chelsea their two goals and I fully expected us to be turned over easily __ but no,bring on the mercurial pair of Trink and Chico and suddenly Chelsea are all at sea with Wolves suddenly playing some lovely football. Excellent goal from Trincao and the energy that Chico brings was definitely required. So pleased for Our captain, brings back belief to the squad which was much needed.

How come Chiquinho can play like that, and doesn't get a run in the team?
How come Trincao can score great goals like today, & other times when he starts,
he just seems to disappear?

Anyway, well done lads for fighting back, unlike the two previous games, but they do make
it hard for themselves.

Congrats lads (and lasses?).

As usual couldn't find a working stream to watch, so followed the MbM here (thanks, as ever).

Got as far as the 'floodgates open?' comment, before having to tune out and leave the bar I was in. Just got home and what a great surprise!

I'm wondering about how much the endless transfer speculation (Adama and now Ruben) gets into the heads of the players and coaches, and disrupts the team, or the club.

The form of players seems to have dropped off a cliff since the Leeds debacle, and I can't make much sense of it.
