Pick(ford) that one out

At Molineux, last November, Wolves deservedly won this fixture 2-1 with two first half goals, a header from a corner by Kilman and a lovely dink of a finish by Raul after a poor back pass. It could have been more but for the efforts of Pickford, nevertheless the Toffees pressed more in the second half and Sa needed to be alert to keep the merited 3 points to the home side.

Much has changed since then, Everton now have Lampard at the helm, though results remain poor (4 defeats in the last 5 league matches) and ahead of the match today, they sit 4^th bottom – incredible given the investment. Two second half Brentford goals yesterday afternoon saved them from an unenviable relegation berth. Everton have accrued just 22 points so far which is the lowest topflight total they’ve ever had at this stage of the season, a real concern for the club and supporters, surely the team will be scrapping and fighting for 3 points today?

Wolves travel up to Goodison after a much-needed Molineux victory on Thursday, going some way to settle recent jitters. Watford were poor, though you can only beat what is placed in front of you and Wolves definitely did that with aplomb. Commanding and competent with 4 goals for the first time in a premier league match since the 4-3 defeat of Leicester in January 2019. The 3 points were vital, the goals a boost and many of the performances a tonic! The defence operated well with the introduction of Big Willy Boly who played like he’d never been away, with some very capable performances from Jonny (a touch of class) and Ait Nouri, the latter surely the ‘shoe in’ left wing back for the foreseeable future. Added to this a dominant midfield, led by Neves and positive signs that Raul was looking sharper too. The way he held up the ball, laid it off and ran off the ball were all much better – nice finish as well.

The team today then, what do we expect? A very similar line up to Watford I would imagine, quite possibly with no changes to the starting XI. That would make a change of late and a sign that Bruno is more comfortable with things. Semedo and Hoever are our only injury concerns / absentees. Neto getting on v Watford was great to see, will he get picked today ahead of Hwang, or is it too early? I’ve mentioned Raul, he’ll be important for sure, he has scored in all 5 of his matches for Wolves v Everton. Quite a statistic!

What kind of Wolves performance can we expect too? With inconsistency being the consistent, which Wolves will we see, more akin to Thursday night and versus Spurs, or the well below par Palace and Hammers matches? Were Wolves to win, it would be our first topflight double over Everton since 1973, traditionally the Blue half of Liverpool is not a happy hunting ground, only 1 win (in 2019) in the last 10 visits. Certainly, with the energy and togetherness displayed from midweek, there is no reason why we can’t reverse some of those less than encouraging stats …… and get us going again away from home (we are placed 4^th in the premier league ‘away’ table)! I’m certain that our supporters in attendance will be in a better frame of mind today, and why not. Everton, however, will be no pushovers, irrespective of form, their home record is much better than their paltry 1 away victory.

I got the Watford match on Total Sportek. That was the first time I had tried it so don't know how good it is I'm afraid but it was ok on Thursday so will give it a bash this afternoon.

Afraid I can’t help with commentary or streams today chaps as I’m sat in Wetherspoons in Liverpool ready to go to the game, and I can’t wait!! Only problem is I’ll have to sit on my hands in the Glwadys St end with my ‘Everton Family Members’. Looking forward to a good game and hoping for the right result. UTW

Just looking at the early moments, for Wolves, this is all about getting enough Gold shirts forward. Free kick swung in by Marcal, ends in a Wolves throw and Neves gives it away this time!

Funny match to watch, no commentary or more importantly crowd atmosphere to hear the thoughts of the natives.

Everton have had one or two very good chances but thwarted by a mixture of below par finishing and good goalkeeping. Other than that, Wolves have defended okay.

Up the other end of the pitch, Wolves have struggled overall, although perhaps showing more from an attacking perspective in the last 15 minutes of the half - Neves has been the busiest for me, played well in defense and looking to get the ball forward. Not easy, because Podence (after Hwang come off) and Raul have, at times been very isolated. Either that, or it is an attack by 100 passes! Podence not having his best for me. Nothing is sticking and is spending a lot of the time on his backside, complaining.

We need more second half, but a little more encouragement latterly

Well that’s it.

Everton 0-1 Wolves. Someone grinning like a Cheshire Cat in the Gwladys Street Stand I reckon!

A competent victory for Wolves against an Everton side who matched us, possibly shaded the first half, but looked at time bereft of ideas in the second half.

A moment of shear quality for the goal, it was so well taken by Coady after really good work from Donk and then Neves with the inch perfect cross.

Kilman returned, despite my thoughts that Boly would keep his place, and he put in a very good 90 minutes indeed. Good to see that.

If I am honest, I think we could have made that fixture a little easier for ourselves after we went up 1-0 and especially after they went down to 10 men, maybe I’m being somewhat harsh after a win, but Podence made quite a few unforced errors and displayed varied and sometimes questionable decision making to me.

By no means a classic but A win is a win is a win. Everton fans would be crying out for the 3 points. Putting it plainly, they did not deserve to win, and we, ultimately did.

Neves man of the match for me, hardly put a foot wrong all game.

Thanks for the information re links folks, eventually managed to get one to work but missed first 15 minutes.
Stream did keep stalling which was irritating but watching the boys doing their thing was a joy. Confidence all over the pitch and Everton really couldn’t cope, outplayed in every department. No player let us down which makes it all the more difficult to select a MOM. Podence, Neves, Moutinho and Raul were outstanding and of course Captain Fantastic scored. So who do you pick— Neves just shades it I think, he ran the midfield and made everything seem so simple, outrageous player.
Seems like things seem to be gelling and what a difference in style to a year ago. If we can keep this group together for a while then we could see the start of something big.

Surprised by the team selection but Bruno got it right. Unbelievably I think he knows more than I do.
Have to admit that the business of Hwang looking like he was going off and then staying on and then going off again would have pi55ed me off if it had been someone on the other side. Another thing that gets on my wick is these late flags for offside.
Anyway, enough of the grumbles. I was expecting Boly to retain his place after playing so well on Thursday but maybe they reckoned he wasn't ready for two quick matches after being out for so long and it was pleasing to see Kilman putting in a better performance after a couple of dodgy ones.
Great goal. Good work by Dendoncker, great cross from Neves and fantastic header by Coady who was excellent throughout which can also be said of Sa ( not the header obviously ).
A good win that keeps us right in there.
Finally a big call from me. I've been supporting Wolves since Primary school in 1967 and attending matches since 1971 so I'm not some young puppy who gets easily influenced. I loved John Richards, Kenny Hibbitt, Dave Wagstaffe and too many others to mention. Fantastic players who are rightly club legends but not World class. Ruben Neves though, is World class and if he isn't, he's not far off. Difficult as it is to compare players from different eras, for me Neves is probably the best player we have had since the mid-60's at least. I hope we keep him for a long time.

You've name checked my Wolves heroes there Andy. We must be about the same age, although I assumed you were young 'un.

Neves is a world class player in my opinion, because he combines wonderful footballing skills with hard work for the team.

Its hard to make direct comparisons to former legends. Can you imagine what Waggy, Richards, Hibbitt and others would be like on today's playing surfaces? Also with all the fitness, diet, conditioning advantages, training facilities, player protection from refs, video analysis and stats etc.

I think there is also a lot to be said for the internationalisation of the modern game, and over time how UK players have benefited from 'continental' attributes like technique and ball retention.
