Match Thread: Arsenal v Wolves

Our Midfield General

February 24 2022

Both Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves may have  concerns before tonight's match at the Emirates stadium. Raul suffered the horrendous head injury in last season's fixture, and Ruben is walking a tightrope having picked up nine yellow cards - more than any other PL player - already this season.

As we know Raul has recovered superbly from his fractured skull and tonight's visit will surely help him put it to bed for now. Ruben on the other hand knows that one more yellow card will mean a two match ban at a time when the team are aiming for a top four place, and the Arsenal fans will surely show him a hard time following his comments about their team's celebrations after winning at Molineux!! Both players maintain the full support of coach Bruno Lage as they prepare for this game.

Bruno once again has a full squad to choose from for this match, with Pedro Neto, Jonny and Hee Chan Hwang probably starting again on the bench. Tomiyasu may also make his return from injury for Arsenal.

The game will be screened by Amazon Prime and will kick off at 19:45 hrs. Our referee will be the hugely experienced Martin Atkinson with John Brooks on VAR Duties.

This board will post regular updates for those unable to otherwise follow the game, and members are encouraged to post their observations and join in the conversation.

A six pointer but at the right end of the table.
Seems we have no injuries to worry about so a full squad looking to overturn the result from the last meeting. We have the capability just need the rub of the green.

Hwang for Donk.

Big match! Big performance required, tonight and Sunday. Good luck to the lads this evening. Something to bring a bit cheer I hope.

Bruno has certainly selected an attacking line-up with Chan joining Pod & Raul in attack.

Cheshire wolf

Important tackle by Nelson without giving away the penalty they claim for.

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 19:48
I hope Martin Atkinson will be alert to Arsenal’s habit of cynical fouls like we experienced at the Mol

Cheshire wolf

Nice work by Pod & NS to get the first corner. Saiss puts it in the net but offside

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 19:52
VAR confirmed offside but only just!!

It was a lot closer than I originally thought.

Hwang. 1-0!!!!!!!!!!

Yes.
Excellent goal, Hwang. Get in.

Lovely finish by Hwang, great interception form a suicidal back pass, but the angle was indeed tight and expertly dispatched

Great defending by CC to deny Lacazette for a goal kick

Fantastic interception from Coady!! Looked like a corner but given as a goal kick

Sala Leaves Hwang for dead, passes, a shoot, fabulous Saiss stop

High octane match

Great block by Saiss this time to deny Odergaard. Wolves are very much at the races tonight

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 20:09
Saka beats the offside and a good tackle by CC is needed to stop him getting shot away. Foul against Raul as hit foot is level with Partey’s head!

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 20:12
Wolves are irritating the crowd with Arsenal type time-wasting already!

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 20:20
Silly attempt at a flick by Pod loses possession and leads to a Lacazette shot taken by Sa. Then CC gives it away & Martinelli goes close

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 20:24
Atkinson recognises an Arsenal cynical foul & Saka gets a yellow card

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 20:34
Good attacking play through Neves ends with a Pod cross which Raul heads wide. Saka is always dangerous in possession. Two added minutes played & half time whistle blows. A mistake at the back gave Raul possession and Hwang Hee Chan #cored from an acute angle with Ramsdale out of it.
Arsenal 0 Wolves 1

Better team so far the players are looking confident and are really buying into the highpress advocated by Bruno. Our two man Portuguese midfield have been tremendous.

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 20:53
Chan is superbly fed by Pod and can only squeeze it for a corner. Joao’s long range shot well wide. Joao gives a free kick away but our defence is strong.

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 20:57
CC furious after a foul given against him despite no contact with White who conned the ref

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 21:02
Saka beats the offside but just can’t reach the pass. It’s all Arsenal at present. Ball centred to Lacazette who skies it. Semedo is down & May have pulled his hamstring

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 21:04
Fans irate as Semedo stayed on th3 pitch, but he is off now and replaced by Jonny which is great to see

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 21:07
Pod fires a ball across the area & gets a corner, but Arsenal break and get a free kick 5 yds outside our area in a dangerous position. Goes off the wall & into Jose’s arms

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 21:16
Good save by Jose to deny Lacazette for a corner. White gets a left footed shot away but we’ll wide. Pepe has replaces Martinelli. Pedro Neto ready to come on

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 21:17
Hwang took a nasty elbow to the face from Soares. Pedro replaces Hwang

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 21:19
Soares replaced by Nketiah. 15 minutes to play

Ten minutes to go and Wolves concede as Pepe scores after good attacking play by Nketiah

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 21:30
Superb play up left wing by RAN and a good pass to Neto who’s deflected shot goes wide for a goal kick!!

Cheshire wolf
24/02/2022 21:34
A proper carry on over who should be substituted so Donk can come on. Raul shown a yellow card after refusing to leave but it was actually Pod who should have gone off. We’re heading into 6 added minutes

Lacazette scores somehow from a very tight angle

Sod’s law it went in off Jose’s hand and may be an own goal

Ivybridge Wolf
24/02/2022 21:42
Yep, think that was an own goal but no blame on Sa, had to go for it.

FT - sucker punch, so disappointing. We missed a couple of chances early on, Arsenal clearly applying all the meaningful pressure in the second half.

Gutting result

Arsenal celebrate as the final whistle goes like they’ve just won the FA Cup!! Tough to take after leading for so long, but we really didn’t threaten their goal very much in the 2nd half but as always defended really well. 2 goals in the last ten minutes sealed it.
Arsenal 2 Wolves 1

Missed chances cost us dearly, we should have been two up at halftime and three up shortly after the break. Not quite at the level where we can control for the majority of the match but getting there slowly. Boys worked tirelessly and must feel gutted to lose at the death.

Ivybridge Wolf

Couldn’t agree more - that’s the second time they’ve won the FA Cup this season, the first being at Molineux!

That match, unfortunately, is football. A final 10 minutes when the first goal created all the additional spur and pressure that Arsenal could muster. I thought when Sa made that last gasp save, that was it, we’d survived, seconds later it was in the net. A cruel goal to concede, for me, we deserved a draw, at least in my eyes, and doubly cruel on Sa whose hand ultimately turned the ball in the net - not that he could have done much about it.

As an attacking force, in the 2nd 45 we couldn’t manage the chances that we created in the first half and Arsenal dominated the ball. Our defence performed extremely well overall, and perhaps Raul will rue the big change he had to make it 2-0 early on. I do!! In that 2nd 45, the only real chance was the Neto chance which was actually deflected (but no corner given). Also, that moment when Coady was through on goal, White inexplicably falls to the ground and Atkinson whistles for a free kick.

A very good match, gutting result, we have to now move on to another very important match v West Ham.

Good effort lads, we just fell short tonight.

Gutted to lose that game at the death, we seemed to give the ball back to arsenal for most the 2nd half and invited pressure. Certainly think that missed chances cost us the game tonight, raul first half, chan just putting one wide 2nd that would of been 2-0 and the Neto chance to make it 2-1 which was deflected but that's football I suppose. No time to feel sorry for ourselves though another big game Sunday at West ham. Just a shame tonight the boys put so much into the game tonight and got nothing. One more thing I thought the ref Atkinson had a stinker tonight!
