Match Thread: Wolves vs Southampton FC

One to look forward to

By Wolves
January 15 2022

Attack will surely be Bruno Lage's plan for today's game when the Saints come to town

Watching the preparations on the practice pitches and listening to the Press conference Bruno's emphasis is clearly on scoring more goals to complement the efforts being made in defence. This will be an imperative against Southampton as they found their scoring form midweek with a 4-1 win over Brentford which will have them in good spirits. However Wolves will be intent on continuing their run of scoring in each of the last ten games against today's opponents, having lost to them only once in the last eleven league meetings.

In the good 3 - 0 FA Cup victory over Sheffield United on Sunday, Bruno tried Marcal then Dendoncker in central defence to cover the absence of Romain Saiss who is now taking part in the AFCON competition. We can only speculate whether he will continue with one of these options today or whether Dean Sanderson will get a place.

Likewise on the wing, with all the media talk regarding possible bids from Spurs or Chelsea for Adama Traore, it remains to be seen whether he will be risked in today's game, or whether Daniel Podence and Trincao will start again.

Today's game is scheduled for a 3pm kick off and will be refereed by newby Michael Salisbury with Robert Jones on VAR duty.

This board will reply upon a decent stream of the game in order to provide regular updates on its progress. Members are also encouraged to post their own observations and engage in the discussion.

Morocco won 2-0 yesterday which guarantees them a place in the next round, thus Saiss will be spending more time out in Cameroon.

The defence didn’t cover itself in total glory in the first half, I suspect Bruno will select Donk, Marcal wasn’t great in the central three, though I’d be very happy to see Sanderson get an opportunity. Hopefully we have just recalled him to keep the bench warm!

I'm surprised to see Neves missing from the squad, and presume Marcal is back on the injury list as neither feature in today's game. An interesting choice of Toti Gomes - not sure if he or Kilman will be on the left side.

Afternoon All
DP goes down a bit easily from a brush with Broja but he’s OK. I’m please to see Tino Livramento isn’t in the Saints squad as he is a dangerous player for Gomes to face in his 1st game. Quick grab needed by Jose in the area

Three corners already and the 3rd from Ston nearly in. Scary start

Cheshire wolf

Good build up play between RAN & Joao until it reaches Donk who shoots high & wide.

Shaky first 15 minutes isn’t it?

Very sluggish and the cohesive attacking intent from Saints, not us

More than unimpressed with the Semedo ‘fall’ in an attempt to gain a penalty.

Glad we had our first corner, and a nice pice of play and shot for Podence but Forster collected with ease.

Podence looking the best player up front so far

Toti needlessly concedes a corner, comes in, header, good save, another corner, cleared.

That’s 9-2 to Saints on corners.

A far from convincing performance thus far …… but we’re winning ….. for now!

RAN hits the side netting but offside anyway. Good tackle by Gomes to stop Broja. He seems quite comfortable in the back three. Jose tips another header over from a corner and the nex5 is cleared well. 4 added minutes being played.
Suddenly the four minutes is over and the whistle goes as Wolves launch a good attack.
Not and entirely convincing performance but we have had to cope with some enterprising attacking from Saints. Good to see us finally get a penalty this season after all the ones given against us, and to see Raul convert it so coolly.
Half time Wolves 1 Saints 0

Ivybridge Wolf
15/01/2022 15:54
It’s HT.

The ref is getting booed off!

To be honest we are second best in this match, we have to pull our socks up if we are to successfully protect this lead, even expand it. Fits and starts for us up front without any real persistent pressure . We have got out of jail on a few very significant occasions and Soton have been able to attack and get round the back too often.

Having said that, great finish from Raul. I just could not believe it took so long to give that penalty ….. anywhere else on the pitch it would have been a foul.

We’re winning, very happy with that!!

15/01/2022 16:36
The Soton bubble seems to have burst at present. The drive they have shown seems to have ebbed away and a great deal of play is now in their half. I would never write them off, but with 16 minutes to go we look good with this 2 goal lead.

As I write, Soton create a good chance but yet again Sa swallows it up with the minimum of fuss. If we do go on to win this, Sa can take a great deal of credit …… mastered his box superbly today

And the final whistle goes and we complete the double over Saints this season. Hasenhuttl looks unhappy with Bruno on the line. Not a classic win but a hard won win. Needed our first pen of the season and a long confusing wait to see whether our second was ruled in or out by VAR. a superb strike by JWP to pull one back for Saints, then the icing on the cake was a first goal of the season well taken by Adama.

FT

3-1 to the mighty Wanderers!!

Great win in a entertaining and competitive match which at key moments could have gone either way. Soton the better side for me in the first half, we were the best in the second and despite looking comfortable for long periods Soton kept going and that goal from Ward-Prowse (which was quite brilliant) set the heart flutters going. They hit the bar and we got the 3rd in the space of a few moments!

Soton are clearly no mugs and caused us a great deal of problems, especially in the first half. Going back to Ward-Prowse, what a great player, wonder how much he’d be worth?

Great to see Coady score, absolutely brilliant. Some good defending again, though a bit more like Blades than, say Man Utd, City and Chelsea etc. Will give Toti some good confidence. Kilman very good.

Also good to see Raul score, hopefully one from open play soon, though the way he put away the penalty was classy.

Podence, again very positive as our most enthusiastic forward player, though my personal MOTM was Sa. Not only can he pull off fine saves, he commands the box so well, is positive and confidently comes for crosses and is such a terrific signing. When under a lot of pressure today, Sa did everything he needed to, to keep Soton at bay. Great keeper.

Very good win, would have preferred 2-1 but there you go 😂

Action packed and 3-1 compliments us. But we had some great performances earlier in the season that went unrewarded so it’s karma. Adama puts himself in the showcase but I think we will still have him in Feb. Maybe he will get a winner in the FACup final against West Ham (assuming they can squeeze past Kidderminster)

Was just about to lambast Traore for blazing over the bar, a terrible miss, and then he redeems himself with a good finish. Trouble is we will now have to wait 18 months for another.
Saints certainly up for it from the start and averaged a corner a minute in the first 7.
Definite penalty, don't know why it took so long to be given but I have to say I think Max was offside for our second. When is he going to get called up by England by the way? If Maguire and Mings can play surely Max can. Another great performance from him.
Everyone did their bit. Sa was excellent again ( great goal by Ward-Prowse ) and Toti did well, no problem. Coady good and Dendoncker covered well for Neves, no doubt there will be the usual morons who are dead from the neck up calling him dead donkey. Thankfully we all seem to be above that stupidity on here.
You could mention them all really but m-o-m for me was Moutinho.

If I was a Saints supporter I would feel hard done by, but I’m not.
Joking apart we were fortunate to come away with the three points today and could have been two down by half time but this squad never gives up and for effort alone deserved to get something from the game. Toti did well on his debut but as has already been said MOM was clearly Jose who kept us in the game on more than one occasion. Bargain of the season! When Traore blazed over I was cussing but he took his second chance very well so credit where it’s due. RAN just seems to get better and better with each game, what a great player he will become. And Kilman is just so assured why on earth we failed to play him much before Bruno fails me. Cundle being given some gentle introductions so he may well feature later on in the season and at last Fabio looks happy and is beginning to show us flashes of his potential. Happy days.
