Match Thread: Wolves vs West Ham United

The Big Test

By Wolves
November 20 2021

Two seasons ago Ivybridge Wolf and I met for the first time and stood together watching Wolves complete a compelling 3 - 0 victory over today's opponents. It's fair to say that neither of us expect the same outcome to today's game!!

David Moyes has done a remarkable job in turning around the fortunes of the East London team and they now sit in third place in the League, one point ahead of Liverpool who they defeated last time out. So it is clearly going to be a challenge for Wolves today to pick themselves up from a poor performance at Crystal Palace and take three points this afternoon.

Coach Bruno Lage reports that all players have returned from international duty fit and well, so he will have a full squad to choose from. He has also informed us that midfielder Bruno Jordao has returned to training after a considerable time recovering from injury.

Team selection today will certainly be interesting - whether Willy Boly will be recalled to the starting Xl, and who will start upfront alongside Raul Jiminez, although it seems that Adama Traore may get another start after several matches on the bench.

Today's game will kick off at 3pm and will be refereed by the ever unpopular Mike Dean with André Marriner on VAR duty

Subject to the availability of a decent stream this site will hope to provide regular updates on the progress of the game, and board members are encouraged to join in and voice their own observations for the benefit of those otherwise unable top follow it.

So... both Adama and big Willy start another game on the bench, but Daniel Podence replaces Trincao in the only change to the starting line-up:

For me the headline of the lineup today is “still no Traore”.

Two seasons ago Chesh !! A great performance that night. Agree nobody thinks we can expect that today but as Wolves fans, when we expect nothing, that’s often when the team confound us all. Many and the media will be calling a West Ham win. I don’t think it’ll be that straight forward.

Having watched that terrific documentary on Jimenez this morning, what price he comes up trumps for the Old Gold and Black today. What a fitting tribute that would be for the late, magnificently great Ron Flowers.

UTW!!

So…. Good afternoon all and here we go with a stream and a manic foreign commentary!! Neves tries to feed Semedo into the box but just over hits it.

Cheshire wolf
20/11/2021 15:09
Antonio causes problems in our box until Neves steps in then a good run up the wing by NS but a really poor final pass so it breaks down.
Good break by Utd but their final ball is also poor

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 15:09
What a waste from Semedo. Lovely little move and interplay, Semedo steams down the R wing, fails to get in an early ball to Raul and a frankly pathetic pass straight to a West Ham defender!! Oh well.

20/11/2021 15:13
Really slick passing by Utd and Bowen’s header is only just wide.
Now Soucek gets a shot away but Jose takes it comfortably

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 15:13
Some menacing front play from the ‘Ommers. Two great chances, first just d failed to latch onto a cross, then a header just wide.

Soucek fire fiercely but straight at Sa.

Lively first 14 minutes

Rice just swatted Podence off the ball. He’s got to be stronger

Cheshire wolf
20/11/2021 15:21
Good attacking spell from Wolves but difficult to get the ball and a player together in to their area. Neves takes a long range pot but easy from Fabianski

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 15:21
Lovely bit of skill and chipped ball from Hwang, just failed to find Semedo in the ‘ommers penalty area. Nice little passages from Wolves the last few minutes

https://i.pinimg.com/236x/74/97/b1/7497b1d1e231e8f83fc02db12bc473da--uk-football-sports-logos.jpg

Cheshire wolf
20/11/2021 15:24
Still way too much passing sideways and backwards - unlike Hammers who go straight on the attack in possession

Cheshire wolf
20/11/2021 15:29
Finally a strike by a Wolves player in their area, but it’s by Semedo and past the post!

Cheshire wolf
20/11/2021 15:32
Wolves have a shout for a penalty but nothing doing, then after good work by Chan Semedo has a shot blocked.

Cheshire wolf
20/11/2021 15:34
Raul beats the offside and is free but tries to lob Fabianski and his effort is too weak. Good effort from Joao put out for a corner by Fabianski & Saiss goes close from the corner

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 15:36
Cries of handball (from me) for a Wolves penalty but replays show it would have been very harsh.

Cannot disagree with you Chesh …… wait, Jimenez all alone, chips the keeper and agonisingly off target …. Moutinho with a 30 yarder ….. tipped over. Oooo. Corner and Saiss fails to connect and again agonisingly wide!!

Well I was going to say too much sideways and backwards and lack of penetrating football. Hopefully the last 3 minutes is a sign og things to come. Have to say however, some of our crossing has been very poor.

Good match though. UTW!!

Podence sent on a good run up front from a great Sa kick. Corner to us. Yet another really poor cross / corner

In fairness Wolves have had most of the possession in last 10 minutes

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 15:41
Blatant obstruction on Raul, just outside the box leaving Jimenez in a heap. Free kick, cleared and a RAN second cross far too deep

https://i.pinimg.com/236x/74/97/b1/7497b1d1e231e8f83fc02db12bc473da--uk-football-sports-logos.jpg

20/11/2021 15:41
Poor challenge by Dawson on Raul for a free kick just outside their area comes to nothing. Surprise it wasn’t a yellow card challenge

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 15:42
Another decent build up absolutely blazed over by Semedo!! 3 minutes to go

https://i.pinimg.com/236x/74/97/b1/7497b1d1e231e8f83fc02db12bc473da--uk-football-sports-logos.jpg

Good play by DP to retain the ball but an awful shot by Semedo

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 15:45
Ball in the net, West Ham correctly denied header from a corner but a big push in the box.

Hwang good approach play, just can’t get the final ball in.

Zouma converts a corner but free kick given against him for climbing all over Saiss. No added time at the end of the 1st half.
A good game perhaps closer than expected. Hammers started better than Wolves but there have been some good attacks which deserved better outcomes from our team. Semedo has has several opportunities to score but blown them all, and poor decision making by Raul spoilt his chance. Podence has shown promise at times and Ait Nouri has played well down the left wing. My frustration at all the backward passing has eased a bit with some decent attacking play!!!
Half time Wolves 0 West Ham 0

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 15:51
HT - West Ham had a great opportunity at the death but couldn’t capitalise after a poor attempted clearance, I think from Coady

Really decent match. Both sides looking lively. Overall from style of football alone, I’d say West Ham look the more likely to score, not because they have had more of the ball, they just look more potent. That’s not to say we haven’y had good chances, far from it. Raul’s was probably the best, beat the ffside trap beautifully with a great through pass from Neves (I think, it’s a fuzzy picture today). The angle was difficult to repeat his recent chipped finish, but this time weaker and off target.

I’ve said it in the thread, our crossing from both sides gives a lot to be desired, nevertheless a decent performance by Wolves, a good match and every chance in this second half.

Would be nice to be there!

Ivybridge Wolf

Good move, 20 yarder from Podence and Fabianski pushes round the post. Corner, scramble, cross, another corner!!! Firmly headed away from Zouma

A real stretch for Fabianski to keep out DP’ s excellent effort from the edge of the box then he has to concede a corner which is cleared. Neves puts in a long distance shot which clears the bar

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 16:09
Much better play, long cross, header away, Neves volley well over but good stuff. ‘Ommers under pressure

Poor challenge on Bowen by Neves and he gets a yellow card

Cheshire wolf

DP earns another corner. DP dinks one in and brings a fabulous save out of Fabianski for another corner which comes to nothing.

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 16:14
Really pressing the West Ham defence at present. Another good break - Podence gets a corner, corner, away, wonderful pass from Nebes, Podence shot very well saved from Fabianski. Corner …….. wasted RAN

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 16:20
Important clearance from Sa after a very dangerous’ommers corner.

Going back to the goal, it was just Fabulous! Semedo pushed forward, well weighted pass to Raul, first time to DP on the right wing, a wonderfully directed pass to Raul, behind the line of play, Raul almost passed it in the back of the net from 20 yards. If you haven’t seen it …. You need to!!

Good attacking play by Antonio but he skies a shot over our bar.

very good Antonio play, released Bowen who should have done better but his turn to blast it way over. Antonio is most definitely a handful

Yep, we are officially inviting pressure now

‘Ommers corner ……. Cresswell, tackles, scrambles, phew handball and Wolves free kick.

Traore is coming on, we desperately need fresh legs with Podence coming off. We now have counter attacking options

Cheshire wolf
20/11/2021 16:43
Wolves playing a possession game instead of attacking then they lose the ball and give away a free kick. Brave play by Hwang. Kilman concedes the free kick against Antonio somewhat unfortunately & it’s well cleared. Rice pulls Semedo back & gets a yellow card. Donk replaces Hwang who has been effective without being dangerous!

Ivybridge Wolf

Now just 4 minutes of normal time to go. A bit of respite for Wolves, Semedo fouled.

And it’s all over with a fine and I must say surprise win for Wolves capped by a superbly taken goal by Raul. A very good second half performance from Wolves and an enjoyable game to watch. Three hard earned points and a degree of revenge on West Ham. And I must say that in my view Mike Dean had an excellent game letting it flow and making good judgements - for a change!!
Wolves 1 West Ham 0

Ivybridge Wolf
20/11/2021 17:13
Great effort, great match, fabulous winner and excellent 3 points.

I go as far to say as highly entertaining and thoroughly absorbing too. I feel done in!!

It was tight, West Ham are a very decent outfit but we more than matched them and overall deserving winners. We did retreat somewhat in the last 20 minutes but we did pretty well, some scrambles but could have scored a couple of late goals ourselves. After an even first half, where I thought they looked the most dangerous (in terms of scoring) we got out of the traps so well in the second half and put West Ham under all sorts of pressure and they were in trouble. It culminated in a fabulous goal, I’ve already described it, just watch it! Magnificent.

There may be plenty of improvement to strive for in this Wolves side, that’s not churlish, that is what they and the management will be thinking, but their efforts today mustn’t go without the plaudits that follow a fine win. Well done lads, to a man today, top notch effort. My word I enjoyed that.

We’me up to 6th in the table, heady heights indeed.

A really good match that was. Good performance from Wolves and obviously a great result if somewhat unexpected beforehand when I would have settled for a draw.
After first 15 minutes we were the better side in the first half and until the last 15 the better side in the second. That being said, we have to take into account what a good and inform side West Ham are and being a goal down they are bound to put you under pressure to an extent.
No-one had a bad match and Neves was just about m-o-m for me.
Also, a word for Semedo. He takes his fair share of stick but apart from his shooting, a good game.
Overall, a great way to come back after a poor performance against Palace.

Managed to get a ticket for this match and so pleased to see a very accomplished performance from Wolves, a really good match for the spectators.
Many of the views on this thread are spot on (why would I expect anything else) so I won’t repeat them, just give a few of my observations.
This team is really starting to produce the style of play that Bruno is trying to introduce and the interplay and movement off the ball is fabulous at times and had the Hammers players questioning and arguing with each other before the end of the first half. Although it was goalless at halftime it could have been very different if some final passes had come off following some scintillating passages of play, main culprits were DP and RAN who did improve significantly after the break.
Although we do seem to revert to passing sideways and backwards at times the transition to a more offensive play is quick, we no longer invite teams onto us but use Semedo and RAN very effectively to put pressure back on the opposition. The hammers were struggling for ideas for most of the match and although they did have their moments it was more down to hard work and endeavour than really understanding how to break us down, great to see Wolves in almost total control.
A solid team performance and perhaps a bit unfair to try and pick out MOM candidates but Max Kilman was almost faultless and virtually had Antonio in his pocket. Neves was tireless in midfield and the real DP turned up for the second half which made that extra important difference, and of course there was Raul, so obviously back and enjoying himself again.
