Match Thread: Manchester United vs Wolves

Mid-Air Duel

By Wolves
December 29 2020

After rescuing a point against Spurs only 48 hours ago, Wolves travel to Old Trafford this evening for the last part of their Christmas 2020 challenge!

Coach Nuno Espirito Santo will be hoping that the enthusiasm and skill of his young team will earn another result for his team after such a short rest period. The ongoing injury situation will not help his team selection either: Leander Dendoncker is unlikely to be fit, and question marks will hang over the availability of Willy Boly and Marcal after the latter left the pitch injured on Sunday. However the young players have played well and done their best to impress in the absence of our more established squad members during this busy period.

On the contrary United have a huge squad to choose from and are proving quite successful in the League and cups this season. If as reported Marcus Rashford is unfit Edinson Cavani may start tonight after impressive appearances from the bench.

The past two seasons have seen a draw in this fixture and that may be viewed as a good result if repeated tonight, espcially considering how many penalties United have been awarded and scored from so far this season!!

The game will kick off at 8pm and our referee will be Jon Moss. The game will be screened live by Amazon Prime Video.

Games shown by Amazon have previously proved unreliable to stream, so this site will provide regular updates for those unable to view it. Members are also encouraged to post their own observations.

A match that will give United an immediate advantage by virtue of the size of their squad.
Nevertheless our boys never give up and do seem to play with more flourish when confronted by a so called big team. United are playing well but hopefully we can cause them some problems and if Neto and Podence can get after their defenders we should be in for a shout. Feel that there may well be a few cards shown in this game, let’s hope it is reds for the opposition.
Expecting a draw, hoping for a win.
Cmon lads.

Four changes for tonight's starting Xl. Marcal doesn't even make it on to the bench. Vitinha gets his first start instead of Podence, and Ait-Nouri and Hoever start in the wing back positions, up against a very strong United Xl. Line-up:

Wow. That is another line up that very few of us could have predicted.
Don’t know what to make of it at all. Is Nuno sending messages up to Fosun management?
Is that truly the best side he believes we can start with? If Marcal is injured (don’t know for sure he is), that explains one selection headache but why is Podence on the bench?
Semedo dropped too .... quite a statement, okay not setting the world alight but thought he had a better match v Spurs.
Hold on to your hats!!
COYW!

I think Marcal injured his knee when his foot caught in the turf on Sunday Ivy,and not long after he was subbed for RAN. I think this is one of those matches where we need Neves & Joao to have an impact from midfield. A good opportunity for Hoever to prove himself at right wing back too.
I think we are facing an extraordinarily strong United team tonight looking at their line-up!

Blimey, wasn't expecting that. Interesting to see how Hoever and Vitinha get on. Fingers crossed.

I dint feel confidant at all about this game... in fact I think its ony a matter a time before we get a hammering, we cant keep starting so poorly in games.

Looking like a severe case of squad management.

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 20:07
CC playing on right side of defence with Saiss in centre & Kilman on left which makes sense. Neto puts a goo£ ball through but Vitty had stopped running!

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 20:11
Good powerful run by Adama & Neto gets the first shot away but no power behind it

Ivybridge Wolf
29/12/2020 20:12
I think this be back to a more traditional ’hit them on the break’ if we are to get anything from this match. Possession wise, so far at this early stage, Manure have dominated. Two decent Wolves shots Neto and Vitinha, both long range

Good hold up play by Adama & sets up Neves who tested De Gea with a good shot. Our defence showing good organisation when Utd attacking

No slow start from our lads tonight I can assure you Irish!

Saiss put the ball on to their bar from a Joao free kick

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 20:28
Good cross by Matic just too high for Cavani

Ivybridge Wolf
29/12/2020 20:30
Great ball in from Matic with Cavanni a whisker away, mayber offside?

Have to be honest, this is a pretty decent performance from this Wolves side so far. Working hard and keeping structure at the back well. Giving Man United something to think about when we attack. On the latter, we’ve had some good opportunities ...... not many in the box though! Good opening 29 minutes

No shortage of confidence from our youngsters Hoever, RAN. & Vitinha considering the venue & opposition. Matic has got away with blocking off Neto with an arm to the face

Ivybridge Wolf
29/12/2020 20:36
I think Matic should have got a yellow for a deliberate block on Neto.

Manchester United should be ahead - Fernandes from 4 yards, straight at Patricio who did well

Great ballin by Greenwood but Fernandez hits it straight at Rui. A let off!

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 20:42
Saiss brings a smart save out of De Gea from a Neto free kick in the edge of the box. Short corner comes to nothing

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 20:50
Half-time and certainly no the boring game some may think. Wolves have done very well in matching and coping with Utd. Saiss had a very good attempt whilst Fernandez hit his shot at Rui. Our problem is that we don’t have a target man but our team are giving it a good go
Utd 0 Wolves 0

Ivybridge Wolf
29/12/2020 20:59
I’m not bored but recognise that neutrals may not feel the same!! I think we did great in that half. Really organised at the back and looking threatening on the break. Alas it’s that final third again, a better pass or position of shot might have meant we went in at half time in the lead. They’ve had the best chance (Fernandez exposing Hoever) but we look promising. Late in the half Neto had a wonderful opportunity to put Traore in but the pass didn’t have the legs. What a shame.

Back three look very solid.

Work rate is very high once again.

Well played lads ..... keep it up, still a long way to go.

Beginning to think that we will have a first team of highly talented youngsters plying their trade in the Prem next year, and others coming through.
Good first half, more of the same in the second half and we could steal it.

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 21:02
Wonder if & when he will bring Fabio onto provide a target?

chicagowolf
29/12/2020 21:04
Hear stopping save when Fernandez sent it straight at keeper, but it is not obvious who to replace to strengthen. Maybe Ait-Nohri

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 21:06
Here we go again Utd bring on Shaw for Telles but Wolves unchanged so far

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 21:10
Cynical foul by Rashford earns him a yellow card. Hoever doing well down the wing

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 21:14
Good passage of play by Wolves. DP replaces Vitinha

Ivybridge Wolf
29/12/2020 21:15
Podence on for Vitinha. The lad did okay, neat and tidy.

Had to laugh then, 3 Manchester United players surrounded Traore and did beat him!

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 21:18
Still defending well and looking to counter attack but struggling to get past McGuire

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 21:27
Some very neat play by Wolves getting DP into the box but his pass was poor, the Adama puts a ball over just too high for Joao. DP goes down clutching his leg after a challenge from Baillie. Martial on for Greenwood RAN also down, but DP up OK. Fabio replaces Neto who has had another good game

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 21:30
Cavani puts the ball in the net but is offside. VAR look at possible against CC but not given. Corner to Wolves

Cheshire wolf
29/12/2020 21:32
De Gea keeps a fine Saiss header out but he’s offside anyway. Utd are really struggling for ideas in attack!

Ivybridge Wolf
29/12/2020 21:34
I was just about to have a huge rant and then the penalty wasn’t given, rightly so!!

We continue to defend very well. The back 3 looking very solid. Kilman very composed. Hoever looking good too.

Our chances are becoming a little few and far between now though. Far less marauding into the Manchester United half.

Good save by Patricio from a 25 yard Pogba effort.

Into final minute of normal time. Romain Saiss gets Alan Shearer’s vote as MotM which is richly deserved. Five added minutes to play for a very well deserved point

Cruel end, but we have a bunch of kids and the energy is great but not, yet, the quality.

Andy Fincher
29/12/2020 22:06
Sadly I had a feeling that was going to happen when 5 mins were added on. Jacksy gits.
I thought it was a good performance from us, especially having seen the side we put out.
Surprised Nuno switched Coady and Saiss but, fair play, Saiss was very good, as was Kilman I thought. He was unlucky to lose his place a few weeks ago.
Ait-Nouri looked better defensively than he has before (still prefer Marcal though. Maybe he can't take so many matches coming so quickly). Hoever did well.
Unlucky tonight.

Lupy
29/12/2020 22:12
So disappointed for the lads. Worked their socks off and plenty of quality on display. Cruel deflection off Saiss who absolutely deserves MOM. Most defeats leave me champing but this showing by Wolves demonstrates how well we are developing a young and exciting squad, three points lost but ten out of ten for a very capable showing against a full strength Utd.

Cheshire wolf

I think the important thing now is to get a win against Brighton on Sat

Ivybridge Wolf
29/12/2020 22:28
The result is gutting, no getting away with that fact. We deserved the point and after seeing the lineup, I feared the worst. Our big problems up front continue and we can’t buy a goal at the moment but we understand why that is but it is a big and ongoing concern. It’s an obvious statement but without goals we will slide down the league.

Nevertheless the team that went out tonight were dealt a cruel blow at the end. No way did I they deserve to lose that match. They played their hearts out as well as ran their socks off. That’s not all, we were very well organised at the back, Saiss, Coady and Kilman terrific as the back three and add to that Hoever who had an excellent match ...... I’d stick him in ahead of Semedo. Ait Nouri also had a very good match. All in all a very encouraging defeat, if you like. Plenty to admire about a number of our players.

We can have the highs of Chelsea, frustration of Burnley and perhaps to a lesser extent Spurs, but tonight the result was a brutal ending for a team that did so much playing as a cohesive team. such is life, such is football.

Onto Brighton. If we can find a solution up front, surely we have enough overall to beat them ..... that’s not if COVID-19 intervenes once again. 54,000 cases today and multiple matches called off, both premier and football league. We’ll see.

Great effort from Wolves tonight, UTW

No problem lads. We tend to have the notion of doing regular updates for anyone who is unable to watch the game on TV or by streaming, but it seems such people are not following the board. I have tried to scale it down from trying to ‘commentate’ to providing updates, but there are times when it feels like Ivy and I talking to each other!!
