Match Thread: Wolves vs Southampton

What we would like to see

By Wolves
November 23 2020

Wolves host a visit this evening from Southampton who have a had a terrific start to the season, sitting three points ahead of Wolves in 5th place, having a 5 goal superior goal difference.

Having had an extra day to recover from trips to various parts of the world for international duties, Nuno Espirito Santo will be hoping for a good performance and result from his team this evening against a team who are enjoying a good season so far. After the demoralising experience of losing to a dubious penalty at Leicester, the Wolves players will surely know that they need to put in a good, energetic and cohesive show tonight, and score some goals, whilst maintaining their defensive qualities. Wolves fans will be looking for an improved performance and goal threat from our somewhat impotent midfielders so far this season.

After having to withdraw from the England squad and self-isolate it is not yet clear whether Captain Coady Coady will be eligible to play. Nuno has implied there may be other injury/Covid-19 concerns, but has not identified them. It also remains to be seen whether Adama Traore will get his first start of the season after all the negative reporting and social media content stating that he is refusing to sign a contract extension whilst starting every game on the bench. We may also see a return to the left back birth for Marcal following a less impressive game for Rayan Al-Nouri at Leicester.

The game will be shown by Sky Sports and will be refereed by the very experienced Andre Marriner, who was the man in the middle for our game against Man City.

The match kicks off at 8pm, and this board will hopefully carry regular updates. Board members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to watch it, or having to rely on the Official Wolves commentary!!

Two changes for tonight's game, and sadly Connor Coady misses his first game since promotion, and is replaced in defence by Leander Dendoncker. Adama Traore gets his first start of the season in place of Pedro Neto who is on the bench. Rayan Ait-Nouri retains his place at left wing back. Line-up:

Sad way for Coady to break his long run of games. See Ruben is Cap'n.
And a good time for Adama to enhance his negotiating position.

This won’t be an easy match, depends on which of our teams turns up, the one that sits back or the one that can take the game to the opposition. If we sit back Saints will really come at us and currently they are no slouches. Plus we don’t have Capt Fantastic to marshall us so will be interesting to see who will pick up the reins.
Adama starts and I am hoping that he goes out to prove a point.
Fingers crossed for all the points. Cmon lads.

Nino just said CC and Saiss both still in self isolation but confident Donk ban fill th3 void left by CC. My concern would be that we’ll miss Coady’s distribution. Saints putting out a strong team who are unbeaten in six games so all to play for.

I was at St Mary’s for our last match with Saints - I’ll take a similar result. Poor first half, scintillating second.

Saints get first corner off RAN well cleared by Neves. Appears we may be playing a back four with Boly & Kilman as central defenders!

Romeo should have been booked for a cynical foul just outside their area. Great double saves by McCarthy to deny Raul & Donk

Superb double save from McCarthy, in particular from Donk

Looking for Semedo & Adama to link up well tonight - as always Adama has two defenders on him whenever he gets the ball. CC sitting in the stand!

Good stop by Ruito deny Walcott after a good move

Cheshire wolf
23/11/2020 20:22
Great block by Max to breakup an attack. He is playing on right of central defence with Boly on left. Adama not having any luck against Bertrand so far.

Free kick by right flag after a foul on Adama ends up being headed over by Boly

Cheshire wolf

Adama works the ball through the centre & shoots from well outside area & it’s easily collected

Cheshire wolf
23/11/2020 20:36
Very good move by Saints & Armstrong’s shot goes just wide with Rui beaten. Nelson puts a good ball over & DP heads well wide. End to end at the moment with a good block by Boly. Good run by Adama but fouled again outside area.DP gets on the bed of it and his header is very well saved

This bloody site just kicked me out - again!!
Neves & Adama both booked for late tackles

Cheshire wolf
23/11/2020 20:51
Half time after one added minute. A good close game where Wolves have come close on 3 occasions, whilst Saints one shot went wide. Very equal in possession and both teams showing good intent.
Saints got away with cynical fouls on at least 3 occasions, but slightly late tackles have led to cautions for two of our players! Max & Willy coping well in a new look central defence
Wolves 0 Saints 0

Southampton have been the better team and deserve to be ahead creating a few good chances from open play contrary to wolves who have only threatened from set pieces. Fortunate to be on level terms which is more down to poor finishing and Patricio than any great defending exemplified by the one on one Southampton had near the end of the second half which looked harder to miss than score

Ivybridge Wolf

Getting chucked off the site too Chesh - this is a bad trend we keep experiencing.

Not one for the neutral is it? I wonder if they’ve ever tried 4 at the back in training? Taking a while to gel, Saints looked very dangerous early on .... but as a paradox, I too think the two central lads have done well, in particular Kilman.

We’re not clicking across the park, again, no silky football yet ..... having said that McCarthy has made 2 excellent saves. Shame.

It’s getting a bit boring but we look to a much improved second half performance to secure, hopefully, 3 points. But Saints are dangerous ......

Typical long run from our half by Adama but his cross drifts out

Another good save by McCarthy to deny DP from open play . First real opportunity for Raul but his header is poor

Ivybridge Wolf
23/11/2020 21:13
Lovely move from Moutinho and Ait for that Podence shot ... the shot being at a comfortable pace and height for the keeper.

Slightly better so far this half? Maybe.

Walcott scores but where the hell was Semedo. Completely switched off. Rubbish defending.

I actually think Semedo is a better right winger than right back, he is a more offensive minded player than defensive one

Kilman asleep this time, playing Walcott on - no doubt about it. They should be 2-0 up there.

Walcott played onside by Max and should have scored after a fine pass by Adams. Wolves are pretty toothless at the moment, and Raul is posing little threat

Walcott misses an absolute sitter, southampton should be out of sight. Dominated the match in clear cut chances apart from our set pieces

Great play by Joao leading to the goal by the way!

Ivybridge Wolf
23/11/2020 21:35
😂😂😂

Well I wanted him on. To be fair, a great piece of play from Moutinho, a rasping drive from Jimenez bounces off the post and Neto sticks it in the onion bag.

You can never write off any side at 0-1. Traore has come into it a bit more the last 5-10 too. An unlikely win on the cards???

Vitinha gets a run out replacing DP

FT 1-1.

Draw fair for me. We came alive after Neto come on.

Many frustrations continue for Wolves fans, not a great performance by any means.

Dominated near the end with a usual slow start - draw prob just about right but never a good result particularly at home

Cheshire wolf
23/11/2020 21:55
3 added minutes to play, need more urgency in the last minute, but too late.
All over and a draw is probably a fair result after a much better performance from Wolves as usual in the 2nd half and could have scored more, but so could Saints. A point puts us 1 point above Man Utd. A difficult game for Nuno to have to deploy a back four in for the first time. Joao Moutinho had a very good game in my view, & Adama earned another start on Sunday.
Good to see Nuno & Ralph in good spirits together at the end of the game.

A reasonable result but we left it late again.
Neto certainly brings an added energy to the game and deserved his goal. RAN looked more assured tonight and hopefully that will settle him down in readyness for some stiff challenges to come. Gave away a soft goal and Semedo was off his mark although generally he had a reasonable game. Periods of the second half showed what we are capable of and I just wish that we could show that level of adventure more often and not keep reverting to backwards and sideways passing, we have a world class centre forward who must sometimes wonder when he is going to get some service from his teammates.
But Saints played well and gave no quarter and if we had been able to field a full first eleven the result could have been different.

Must admit that I was surprised to see Max Kilman playing following the death of his father.

Just wondering if anyone else held their breath when Neto scored, in case his left big toe was found by VAR to have strayed offside?
