The Molineux Way wants YOU

By Tom Bason
January 14 2013

As you all are aware, four days ago An Angry Wolf and SPRH were both banned from this forum. This was not a decision taken by the moderators on this board, but by SportNetwork. Yet, this appears to have raised questions as to the (entirely voluntary and completely unpaid) jobs that we do on here.

Now, we accept that we do not devote as much time to the moderation of this board as is probably needed, due to fact that we have lives away from it. It's more than likely that if we had acted earlier, the problems between AAW and SPRH could have been nipped in the bud.

Despite us both being long term users of the board - I first posted on here in late 2004 - we are tainted with the 'mod' tag and at times over the past couple of days there appears to be an 'us and them' type feeling. That is why, we are asking for volunteers to become a moderator.

If you wish to be a mod, then post on this thread. We have only one criteria; a minimum of 500 posts on here according to the posts registered on your profile. This is in order to rule out any trolls, and to (hopefully) ensure that it someone with the board's best interests at heart.

We will then run a poll on here, and the person with the most votes will become a moderator.

We are not asking you to write articles (unless you want to), but instead to help with the general running of the site.

If you want to nomiate someone, feel free, but we will only consider them if they actually say they want to do it

Its a thankless task Toomb. I wouldnt want to do it myself but I would like to put on record that I do appreciate the efforts of yourself in particular and the other mods in general in keeping this board alive and moderated in a fairly sensible fashion.

You never come on with the "I am a mod and my word goes" unlike on some of the other Wolves boards. We will be lucky if someone steps up to the plate and does half as good a job as Toomb does.

First id like to say what a fantastic job you guys have done over the years, like others of said already.

I think theres a number of people on here who could add to the board as a mod.

In no particular order as follows....

Arthur tennan

Alkapone

Wolverina

Cedric harper

Jan

Barmy arm wolf

Fbby

Stourport

Theres others of course, but off the top of my head the above would add to the site no doubht so lets hope one of them anwers the call.

I nominate Ivybridge - top poster, always level headed and I don't think I've seen him have a argument with anyone in all my years on here.

I don't think I could be a mod, I couldn't bring myself to edit or delete posts. Anyway I don't think more mods is the answer, it's fine the way it is and sportsnetwork should be grateful for the job you do in keeping this forum going when the majority haven't been used for years. But I appreciate sites like this aren't free, so why we are on it we must bow down to the people who own it.

Thanks for that Mills. I have thought about this all day, and on balance I would be interested to hear by PM what the role entails and possibly put myself up for it. I am on the site most days during the season, and even during the close season come to think of it!! I retired from full time work last year so I do have the spare capacity.

I don't have the record of some posters of time served on this site, but I have been a poster for over three years. I also would have what it takes to edit or delete posts or threads which I considered were either spoiling the board for the majority or were unduly offensive.

Thats very harsh Ian. The mods have busy lives and give up their limited spare time to help run the board as smoothly as possible. If there was another mod it would ease the burden and hopefully allow any problems to be handled quicker/better. Anybody who wants the job has the chance to put themselves forward including yourself.

There are currently only 2 mods who by and large do a pretty good job of letting things go and not being overly heavy handed which most posters on here appreciate as setting this board apart from the other Wolves boards. In fact by the mods being overstretched and perhaps letting things go too much between Angry and SPRH then Sportnetwork were forced to intervene from above in this case as they might be held to be legally accountable for what goes on on their website/board.

From the information posted by Angry and SPRH there is little doubt that if either party wanted to press matters then they could involve the police if they wanted too. Thats clearly going way too far so Sportnetwork had little choice but to intervene. The mods have done their very best to follow direction from Sportnetwork while at the same time keeping everybody informed and giving everyone the chance to have their say. What else could the mods do? How would you have handled it differently or better?

I'm pretty sure that whatever you say there will be people on here who disagree with you and thats one major problem of being a mod. Basically you cant please all of the people all of the time. This board currently has a couple of really good mods and hopefully we can get now another one on board.

Footnote Added : I should make it clear that I'm not a mod and I dont know either of the existing mods or anybody involved with Sportnetwork personally!

I agree with Stourport. The depth of loathing and insult-flinging angry and SPRH engaged in went way beyond the 'Please Read' sticky that put up after some mud-slinging earlier in the saga.

Angry was one of the best posters when on topic and I will also miss his or her comments - especially as it cut through the cr*p on the official site, which I stopped reading long ago.

I respect your position though Janet and Ian, as it comes over as quite a personal matter since you seem to be friends with angry, whereas I'm just a bloke typing on a keyboard from abroad. I can't stand in your shoes (especially yours Janet) but can understand your stance on the matter as it might be a matter of principle as well as one of opinion for you both.

It seems this site is held together by gum and string sometimes but it survives because of the mods keep persevering with it and the core or occasional new posters who keep it breathing. It's a loss when any of you lot leave.

I think there's no harm in bringing in some reinforcements on the moderation - and would wholeheartedly back Cheshire if he wants to do it.

Hiya Risca (Sm150)

Yes, Wolf appeared to think I am a personal friend of angry's too. I can honestly say though, that neither myself or Ian have never met or even spoken to angry verbally.

However, yes we like many of the posters, have become fond of angry over the years and enjoyed many discussions on the board, and so would indeed like to think of him/her as a friend now.

Regarding my stance on this matter - Yes you are right, it is a matter of principle, and I would support ANY poster who received such abuse as angry has been subjected to (Sm17)

Thanks Risca, I appreciate your support as you are also a poster who I think makes a great contribution to the board with well thought out posts.

I also agree with your support for both Stourport's argument and Ian & Janet's perspective.

I have thoroughly read the 'For the attention of the board' thread, and I have to agree with Stourport that this has been a real mess for the mods to try and manage, without being accused of being heavy handed or intrusive etc.

The technicalities of the situation are also highlighted by Stourport on that thread and make clear the difficulties of trying to identify guilt absolutely.

Let me be clear, I found SPRH's offerings on here banal and highly irritating most of the time, and did my best to tell him so, but I must also say that Angry has been guilty at times of some most offensive posts, which in my mind have almost amounted to 'cyber bullying', and have probably resulted in the likes of Tony1978, Lord Thor and another - who's name I can't accurately recall - leaving the site. Some may praise him for achieving this, but I think it better to try and retain posters if possible.

However it strikes me the clear difference between the protagonists involved here is that Angry is a gifted and eloquent word-smith, capable of making most of us eager to read his posts. He also researches for accuracy which can make him hard to argue with. Conversely of late SPRH's posts have - not exclusively but in the main - been intended to bait Angry, and the situation has deteriorated over a lengthy period of time. I don't think any of us were surprised to see their online squabbling, taunting and fight arrangements brought to a halt, and I certainly thought it should have happened earlier, but I do think it is a difficult responsibility to hold, in trying to keep posters on here happy whilst upholding the requirements of Sportnetwork.

I have previously posted my support for the intervention of the mods, and it is clear to see that their position remains as difficult now as it was prior to the banning decision being made, and I'm absolutely sure that both they and the rest of us would not wish it to result in any more long-standing posters being lost to the board.

Mills Wolf
15/01/2013 13:40
Cheshire for that post alone you should really consider the role, a thankless task yes, but something im sure you could do well and still retain the poster point of veiw also something some of us poster would struggle with.

Hope you give it alot of thought and come to a decision that is right for you.

Cheshire wolf, I too appreciate your thoughts. However, the problem here is that Wolf did appear to 'identify' SPRH as being guilty of sending an abusive message, of one of the very worst kind - What evidence he used only he can say.

I too do not like losing posters either new ones or long standing ones.....However, I think this unfortunate saga will result in just that (Sm17)

The points I want to make have normally been covered by the time I get here so I dont post too often.

But generally this site requires no moderating at all.

Just some extra eyes in case of trouble. There are a number of people I am sure would make a good job of it.

Perhaps this shoud have been done after the first flair up in the summer.

I am interested to know does anything get done to promote the board to new members?

In terms of numbers maybe one or two new posters would be nice to replace the gap left by AAW leaving but too many would make it difficult to read through everything which is why I like it here.

Ivybridge Wolf

Excellent post Cheshire. If ever anybody wondered if you could make a great mod – they certainly know now. I hope you're taken on and within a suitable time period – we wouldn't want a Morgan / Moxey 'due process a-la Feb 2011' to take grip would we??!! This whole saga has been a sorry affair and I'm convinced a third (or fourth) mod will help. It's not just about deleting / editing – surely its also keeping an eye on things and trying to maintain smooth running of posts and feedback to sportsnetwork where updates / improvements could help? I know the appointment of an extra mod will help draw a line underneath things and return posts back to our core love of football and Wolves.

In one sense, it's good to see so much passion for this site, whatever the viewpoint. For many of us it's become part of our Wolves life. Since I joined there have been a number of flashpoints, but this is the biggest. Some of the stuff discussed elsewhere has been vile – I read the PM in question before deletion and it was shocking (worth a lenghty ban IMO), though the full transcripts between who, when and why can only been known by the mods and sportsnetwork – and that is where the role of the mod comes in. Having said that, overall the quality of the posts and variety over the last 6-12 months has been excellent – so it's not all gloom and doom.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing in terms of handling / modding recent events but we are meant to be dealing with adults here? In any case this has lead to the call for an extra mod – the right one in my view – i.e. Tom and John have requested for more resources rather than replacement – and that's good too. I'm sure an alternative course of action might be taken in future if similar cicumstances cropped up?

Clearly poster retention and recruitment is key and from my time on this board, the comings and goings prove that it is still a vibrant and dynamic – but certain recent new posters have added fuel to the fire – one leaving because he had a single boring agenda (Curbs), the other said sorry but got tarred with the same brush and left at high speed which was unfortunate to say the least (Dean Saunders) – however anybody reading, thinking of posting might have concluded (incorrectly) we are a bit of a closed shop / clique. Surely there's room for all on here – as there always has been in reality. In terms of longer term posters – the more retained the better – I feel strongly about that. We have become a community with traits that we get to know. Additionally I could be one eyed cyclops neaderthal hunchback gurning into my PC screen for all you lot know however judgement is made by opinion and words ! I like the idea of bringing back the Bullocks site – but from my recollection it was dropped due to lack of use after a period of success – I could be wrong on that one.

Anyway enough – I have pondered about even typing this stuff at all because I wonder if we aren't getting a little too introspective about all the issues we've witnessed lately and by writing I'd just be adding oxygen to the thread – but I relented, probably coz I want this site to continue to succeed and thrive and I have an opinion. I don't mind OT threads and general saftness, though at the end of the day this board keeps me in touch with my one great passion – Wolves.

End of ramble.

Got to say, having been one of the more seasoned posters on this board along with probably a handful others, I truly think that this whole situation has been handled terribly. Not by the mods, but as a whole, this should have been nipped in the bud months ago. I'm all for relaxed moderating and allowing free speech but there comes a point in life where people will take the @#$%& until you set forceful boundaries. Any sort of disgusting PM's or posts should result in permanent bans, full stop, no second chances. It's clearly in the rules of this forum and everyone knows those rules, and if you have the fall to flaunt those rules it shows you don't give a flying f..k about the welfare of this board and should not have the opportunity to disrespect it any further. Sportnetwork could easily close this forum for things said if it got too out of hand, and I for one wouldn't have a problem if ANYONE got chucked off if it meant guaranteeing the continuation of a message board that has been in a lot of our lives for many years.

Angry, jan and Ian, sorry to hear if you're leaving, I see you as good friends who I've spent many a year discussing the ups and downs of the biggest up and down club in the country, and your posts have always been insightful, enlightening and in the case of angry, god damn f..king hilarious at times. If any more long time posters leave, that may be it for me too. 2 or 3 years ago I actually offered to help with the moderating of this board as I felt it needed a bit of help but was politely turned down as it was felt there was enough capacity, which was probably right at the time. Even if I were to be a candidate now, with work commitments like many others I simply no longer have the time to even post on or view the board every day so I'd also like to nominate any previously mentioned poster, I think most are up to the challenge, just depends on who can sit on here most days for long periods of time.

Not at all Ian, genuinely gutted to see three of the best posters this forum has had all going at once. It's orto lee to see the decline of a board that was once so popular and thriving, hundreds of posts a day, so many in fact that oh used to have to look at least past the first page of threads to find posts from the day before. I only looked at the who is online stats on the side of the page the other week and remember the days when there would be 50-over 100 people viewing this site at any given time, and it pained me to see that at peak time (around 7pm) on a weekday evening that there were just 5 on here.

I'll make no bones about it, I've been disillusioned with this board simply because of that, and whilst I used to make time to come on here, work commitments or not, I tend to only come on here when I've not got a lot else to do these days, which tends to be quite occasional meaning I probably come on once or twice a week usually, which also isn't right. And to be honest, I came on here mainly to see posts by users such as yourself and the lovely jan and the mercurial angry, so for you to be going leaves me with even less desire to check in. There's hales and AT and the like who I still greatly enjoy discussions with, but people like Old Wulf and OSB and others who've left over the years to be replaced by morons such as SPRH have made this board a lot less enjoyable than it used to be. Was never perfect whilst being perfect to us all if that makes sense.

A final push for any more volunteers?

At the moment it looks like Cheshire is the only one actually say they want to do it. If anyone else wants to volunteer, do so today, if not it'll be Cheshire!

For Cheshire (and anyone else), as has been pointed out, generally the board runs itself, and it's only been in the last 7 days or so that there's been a huge amount to do.

We'd basically like you to be around the board, reading the majority of the threads. If you think someone has been out or order, drop them a PM and try and sort it out..... if the worst comes to the worst, you'll be able to ban them, but we try and avoid that if possible.

It would also be good to tidy up the site; where there are two/three threads on exactly the same subject, you can merge them. We don't tend to delete, edit other people's threads or posts, but instead merge similar threads into one.

And finally, and this by no means compulsory, there is the general site. We are quite restricted in terms of layout etc, but there are quite a lot of dead links and things around the site that it'd be nice to tidy up.

It's basically about having someone here more often than John and I are available to be and try and end problems before they start

Ian, you may or may not see this, depending on whether you've left the board yet. If you've already gone, then I apologise for the delay in my response, but it's been quite a heavy week at work.

I quite clearly set in the initial post that we could have handled things better had we been around the board more.

We are admitting our deficiencies, and taking steps to put things right by asking for someone else to give a hand

As long as it's right for you, i think you should take up the role, ideal candidate i think.

Im sure all of us will agree.

Thanks for your reply Tom.

Jan and myself have discussed the issue and have decided to leave the forum for now. We wish to make clear that there are several good posters on here that we hope will continue to post here. We WILL return at some point in the future. We have just grown tired of it and now especially seems the right time to disappear quietly into the night.

Best Wishes all until we return. Ian x
