Mark Webber was deemed to be in sixth place and scored 1.5 points. This is half the normal points haul for that position due to the race being stopped early due to a torrential rain storm. Had the race been flagged just one lap later though, the team would have been celebrating its first podium of the year.
Car 14, MARK WEBBER, (Finish Position 6th Start Position: 5th)
"The guys made the best call to stop the race when they did. It would have been nice to have had some more laps to give us a crack at getting on the podium - but that's how it is, so I've got mixed emotions. It's dark now (7pm), so it was the right call not to make a re-start. I'm not so sure you can blame the time of day for today's conditions, as the weather was bad at 3pm too. It seems it was just one of those days. It's been the mistiest and coolest day I've ever seen in Malaysia for race day."
Car 15, SEBASTIAN VETTEL, (Finish Position DNF, Start Position: 13th)
"Not so much to tell. I was on the intermediate tyres and they were pretty gone as it wasn't very wet before the sudden pour down. I was approaching Turn seven and there was suddenly lots of water, but I was being very cautious. I lost the car due to aquaplaning and there was nothing I could do. There was too much water and my tyres were not made for those conditions. A spin wouldn't have been much of a problem, but the anti-stall didn't work. Without that, I would just have spun, lost some time and that would have been it. In the past drivers had three pedals, a throttle, a brake and a clutch and when you were spinning you knew exactly what to do. It's not in our hands anymore, so it's a shame that we have to retire for this stupid reason."
CHRISTIAN HORNER:
"The rain was always going to come, it was just a question of when. Unfortunately it started with drizzle, followed by heavy rain. We got both drivers onto full wets at the earliest possibility and we then put Sebastian onto intermediates. Just before the heavy rain came, he was the quickest car on the track at the time but unfortunately he spun on his in-lap to get extremes and the anti-stall didn't catch the engine, so that was the end of his race. Mark made a pit stop for intermediates just before it started to rain heavily and then pitted again for the extremes. If he would have completed that lap, we believe he would have been third in the running order. However, the count back, classifies us 6th."
FABRICE LOM, Renault, Principal Engineer, Track Support:
"What a race! We had a difficult start at the beginning and Mark lost some places, although Sebastian made some. Both cars then had good fights- moving up through the field and overtaking lots of cars. Then the rain came and it was like a lottery. We have to apologise to Sebastian; the anti-stall didn't catch his engine, so we have to investigate that. Mark did a fantastic job; it's an unfair result for him, but at least we get the first points of the year."
Vote Quimby I might be wrong, but reading between the lines I reckon they're dirty that Webber came in for the inters and destroyed a possible podium.
I would have thought there would be some sort of conversation about the radar images before they brought him in for inters that went something like.
Mark: Are the inters faster?
Christian : Yes
Mark: I'm coming in.
Christian: No @#$%& way - it's going to absolutely @#$%& @#$%& down in 5 minutes.
...or something similar.
Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.
For the whole race the "experts" were saying that the rain was going to hit "in a few minutes". In the meantime, Glock had screamed past Webber on inters and Webber was in danger of slipping further back through the field as his wet tyres degraded further (as was happening with Kimi), so I think the move to put Webber on inters was an insurance policy to protect his position. It was just unfortunate that the rain eventually did hit two laps later.
However, even if Mark had stayed out, you don't know that his worn wets would have held up (I think Kimi and a few other drivers said their wets were destroyed and useless once the rain hit).
If Webber (and his engineers) felt that he could safely and quickly stay out on his worn wets for a few more laps, I'm sure he would have done.
Had everyone known that the race result would be determined on the positions at the end of Lap 31 then the correct strategy would have been obvious to everyone. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!
Weather was crazy and that is that, some people got lucky with their choices, in my opinion Webber drove a fantastic race, and this was one of the most enjoyable races i seen, - for when it was running, watching Webber battle with Alonso, Hamilton, etc was great! and he won the battles.. in yo face!!!
I was kinda disappointed watching the race......because I bloody spoilt it by watching the live timing first! It was on delay here so I had decided to watch the first five laps on live timing then switch off.....but ooohh no you didn't have enough bloody willpower to do that did you! You had to watch the whole thing!
It was like watching a movie with someone that had seen it before and insisted on telling you what was about to happen.
I still enjoyed watching Mark drive a really good race though. I must say though that he was a bit untidy with his work on Hamilton. However it was good racing between the two of them to keep it clean.
Ian, the thinking behind your comment intrigues me:
"Had the race been flagged just one lap later though, the team would have been celebrating its first podium of the year"
If the race had been red-flagged a lap later it would have been called after 32 laps - i.e. in the order that was shown on the timing screens throughout the delay, right up to the podium ceremony - with Webber back in 8th. Hardly a podium!
jez, when it comes to positive psychology and people management you really are at a loose end. horner only serves to diminish his own position by failing to recognise when one of his drivers does an excellent job.
it is called motivation and i am certain that mark webber does not hang on every word spoken by horner for his comments as a driving force. obviously the omission of any positive acknowledgment says more about horner than about webber. likewise your negativity towards mark webber belies the fact that no one has ever given you the acknowledgment of your perceived success and you feel compelled to maintain the status quo.
Maybe he didn't like Mark's performance and thought that more was expected.
You are joking right, you attack webber fans for being biased and irrational and come up with a statement like that. What particular aspect of webber's driving would horner have thought was a let down.
Even if we go by your logic, horner should be critically evaluating/commenting vettel's spin.
Like K1 said, would hate to see your management style. It is pretty obvious that red bull are placing all their expectations on vettel, which will be placing a lot of pressure on the team and driver. I suspect it will also motivate webber. Especially if he matches or beats vettel over a few races.
I can never understand why managers, openly show their bias towards one employee over another (except when the employee is truly incompetent), all it does is divide the team and decrease efficency/productivity. Doesnt just happen in F1.
I agree that Horner's "public" comments appear a touch biased, and that's not a great signal, but we have no idea what the internal communications at RBR are like (other than Marko!) and I'm quite sure that Mark gets plenty of praise within the team and personally from Horner.
I'm also quite sure that Horner's pay packet/career prospects are directly linked to the performance of the team as a whole, so it would not be in his interests to demotivate one of his highly-paid, gun drivers.
For all we know, RBR may have been quite open with Mark that they intend to publicly promote Vettel to improve his marketability and flog him off to Ferrari/BMW for the best price, reinvest the proceeds in the team etc. etc. and Mark may well be cool with the approach in that it takes the spotlight off him while Seb deals with the public pressure.
In summary, I do think people here are being a bit over-sensitive about Horner's remarks (but not Marko's!) and I'm sure that Mark receives plenty of praise and motivation from the people that count.
@sydney F1 fan, you may well be right in what you are saying but it is all supposition as no one really knows what goes on internally. my comments dealt only with the facts as they have been reported, eg horners reported statement.
i think we all know the importance of positive feed back, whether that is for good/bad performance. either way it makes for relationship enhancement so as to move forward.
i am no psychologist but my personal experience as a CEO of a fair sized multinational company allowed me to employ these methods of management which in almost 100% of cases proved to be successful in getting the best performance from my executives. it is basically common sense.
mark webber, by my analysis, is a highly motivated individual who would have his own way of dealing with negatives and has proved time and time again that he will not allow his so called 'bad luck' to derail his ambitions. that said, he needs, like all of us to be appreciated for the hard work and endeavour that he brings to the team.
Most of the reported comments from Horner in the media are as a result of questions. Unfortunately we don't tend to get the questions published... just the answers run together.
As has been said several times the media is trying the make Vettell the new F1 wunderkind and I expect a lot of their questions to Horner are about him rather than solid dependable old Mark.
In the release from RB I really don't see anything against Mark and pro Seb.. Horner just deals with them in the order they finished... Seb fell off first and Mark finished well but if things had been different it could have been better. Nothing negative or veiled in it at all......... unless you want to analyse until kingdom come.
alison, you missed what i was reporting. i was not commenting on a report from an interview. the comments were from the RBR race summary produced by RBR.
yes you are right alison. i was commenting on your opening. sometimes what is not said means a whole lot more than what is said.
fabrice lom made the point and i thought that given the rather extenuating circumstances of the actual race that horner might just have said something complimentary. lom is a renault man and he took notice of the effort mark webber put in as he thought it was important.
just my interpretation thats all.
i think that it is obvious where the horner/helmut alliance is coming from. they see vettel as a future meal ticket and that is where their sentiments lie. that's cool for them however the interests of the team are made up of other elements as well and a demotivated webber [if there is such a thing] cannot be in the teams best interests.
i am maybe seeing shadows where there is light but a pattern appears to be emerging which i don't think is healthy. markos comments were out of order in my book and horne does nothing to contradict them and put full equity between drivers on the table.
Personally one member of the "team" or what is deemed to be the "team" contradicting another gives a worse impression than one not dignifying the other by commenting.
Horner just deals with them in the order they finished
Haha. So when Seb's race is finished first he gets top billing. THAT explains why he's the centre of the universe - his race was over before his team mates in both events so far.
When Webber puts it in the wall on lap 6 and Vettel is on the podium I hope they remember the formula.

If you truely felt secure about Mark's performances and his position in the team and that Horner's comments are no where near the truth then it won't bother you.
i certainly feel secure in the case of where i see webbers performance within the team structure and i also see whe pere he appears to be getting very little public support from his team principal especially after his sunday performance.
i have no need to hide behind what you deem to be insecurity. as i have quoted before, dissing on webber is some form of outlet for your own insecurities and failure to recognise that simply makes your outlook all the more weak and puerile. however if it makes you feel a better person then fine by me but it is hardly reality.
for VQ, an accurate summary and i heartily agree. those who dwell in the negative usually suffer from a degree of 'relevance deprivation' which manifests as the LAM syndrome.
if mark webber has been cited as being in the top ten drivers in the world by those whose business is F1 solamente then i am quite prepared to back their judgment over and above some insignificant individual whose sole claim to notoriety is posting on an internet forum.
I don't, well not directly. I add to TV ratings and in turn help generate advertising revenue to help F1 and then MW... But I don't rate that as supporting him.
Well, jez isn't a fan of Marks so I wouldn't expect positive posts from him all the time. But he's not a nuetral observer of him at all. Getting jez to say something positive about Webber is like getting blood out of a rock, however the negative/underhand comments spew out like spin from a McLaren communications officer or a Piquet Jnr tribute video.
jez.....support webber? have you recently undertaken a trip to syria, damascus maybe? an epiphany by chance? i simply do not believe it and i will lodge an appeal with the relative body.
Perhaps what we have is a Collingwood supporter.
For those who don't understand this, Collingwood is a team in the AFL. Their supporters are considered a little different to anyone else. Most normal people find it very difficult to communicate with them. They can be very passionate but when things start going wrong they have been known to become so rabid as to consume their own young. If a grudge is held it is generally for keeps.
Jez i just looked through the field of current F1 drivers and Webber is definitely in the top 6 i might be able to find 5 drivers better than Webber but i cannot find 6 so Webber is the 6th best driver in F1 at worst!

I'm not Jez (honest). But I'll have a go.
1. Alonso
2. Kubica
3 Shambleston??
=4 Button Trulli Webber Kimmi Massa
It's completley subjective, and you could easily compile a list which excludes Webber from the top 6.
Put any of the best 10 (throwing Rosberg and Vettel in there) in the right machine and they can do the job. There's a poofteenth between them from 1 to 10.
Mark used to be in the top 3 or 4 drivers on the grid in my opinion, but he'd still be top 10.
His inconsistency in getting off the line, and at times questionable ability to get moves completed cleanly marks him down somewhat.
The emergence of ruthless & clinical F1 assassins like Hamilton and Vettel has seen Mark slip a bit in the rankings. Massa's also upped his game, and Glock's no dummy.

he actually said 'us' - perhaps he meant Vettel as well Interesting going through the team quotes for any given race, quite a few could'ves, even from Ross Brawn. I wonder if he's embarrased.
I know he got all hot and bothered when he saw the title of the video he's thinking about. "Mark spinning off! Golly this is great news, I can really show those guys at Racing Bulls. I'll bait them in with a throw away line on the end of provocative post, they'll bite for sure!"
Next time though, he may infact watch said video and notice the fuzzy car in shot is infact Buemi. Nice try though Duffer! Fun times.
