Albon pushes back against impact of Colapinto

In the time that Alex Albon has been a full time driver for Williams Racing he has had several team-mates the most recent being Logan Sargeant. During these periods Alex has consistently outperformed his team-mates but now we are faced with the situation where he has a new team-mate in Franco Colapinto.

Since his arrival Franco has been able to match the points finishes that his more experienced team-mate has being able to achieve. This has generated questions regarding the performances of Alex in the races since Franco's arrival. Is Alex the talent that Williams has placed so much faith in going into 2025, where he will be joined by Carlos Sainz.

But now we are seeing Alex push back against such speculation. When he was asked at the recent Brazilian GP as to whether Franco's arrival had impacted his performances Alex made it clear he did not feel that this was the case and that he continued to focus on his own performances.

But he did admit that it was now a positive thing to have a team-mate that is able to assist in the development of the FW46.

Alex said: “Not really, no. It’s always been about me. The focus is always about myself and my own performance.

“It has always been interesting, especially last week, it was a shame we never could finish the race, but the pace and the feeling of the car was much more like it normally felt like.

“I think we’re still understanding the car, it seems like – depending on the weekend – one of us seems to find the sweet spot with it, but it’s not been consistently enough at the moment.

“The positive thing is that, if you take Mexico, there were a lot of lessons learned from just trying stuff from his side of the garage which genuinely improved it for me as well.

“So it’s nice to have that level where we can learn from each other and take from each other’s cars, that dynamic within the team is great to have.”
