Emilia Romagna GP: Mixed practice for Williams Racing

October 31 2020

With the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix being run over just two days the Williams Racing Team would have just a single ninety minute Saturday practice session to not only get prepared for the race but also qualifying. With the end of the session the Williams drivers would finish in 18th and 20th with George Russell leading Nicholas Latifi. On face value this would seem to be a disappointing result but the team but they would have issues the major one being with Nicholas who lost a considerablew amount of track time with a Brake by Wire issue. For George apart from a time set on the soft tyre while running what appeared to be high fuel he would focus on a longer run on the hard tyre in the later part of the session. Overall a mixed session for the Williams team.

Team Summary:
With the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix being run over just tow days so the first practice session would be on the Saturday and ninety minutes. With a rush of drivers coming out times would quickly come as the teams worked quickly in the single ninety minute session. Sainz was fastest with a 1m:20.983 using the hard tyre but Leclerc would go ahead only to see Kvyat quicker with a 1m:19.521. Both Williams drivers were out and would end up been 19th and 20th. Quite a few drivers would have their times deleted due to track limits so with ten minutes completed Verstappen would be fastest with a 1m:17.047 from Gasly, Sainz, Leclerc, Albon and Hamilton sixth. The Williams drivers were currently 15th and 17th. Ocon had moved into second followed by Sainz, Perez, Kvyat, Stroll, Hamilton, and Leclerc eighth.

Leclerc would move up to second followed by Hamilton, Kvyat and Sainz fifth. Verstappen had set a 1m:15.912 to remain fastest from Gasly and Leclerc. The track would empty quite quickly as drivers completed their first runs. Fourth was Hamilton followed by Kvyat, Sainz, Norris, Ricciardo, Ocon and Albon tenth. On the medium tyre Bottas would set a 1m:15.783 to be quickest. More drivers would start to return changing to the medium tyre with thirty minutes of the session completed. Both Ferrari's were out running on the soft tyre joined by Raikkonen. Sainz was now third followed by Gasly and Stroll. Perez would move ahead of Stroll with Norris now seventh. Ocon would move up to third as Verstappen came out on the soft tyre. But Ocon's time would be deleted seeing him drop back to 11th.

On the medium tyre Hamilton would go second behind Bottas. Verstappen was now third but would use his soft tyres to set a 1m:15.338 to be quickest. Albon was now fourth behind Bottas. But on the soft Leclerc would move into fourth now followed by Gasly and Ricciardo sixth. After their soft tyre runs the Williams drivers were 13th and 18th. On the soft tyre Bottas would go quickest with a 1m:15.218 but Verstappen would move ahead with a 1m:15.023. Hamilton was third but yet to set a flying soft tyre lap. Stroll was now fourth followed by Leclerc, Gasly, and Perez seventh. Hamilton would move into second behind Verstappen. But his enxt lap would see a 1m:14.726 to be quickest over Verstappen by 0.2s. Albon was now up to fourth on the soft tyre. But the Renault's would move ahead with Ricciardo and Ocon fourth and fifth and Albon soft.

With twenty five minutes remaining the Williams drivers were 15th and 19th. Drivers were completing longer runs with Bottas out on the soft tyre with eighteen minutes completed he had completed seven laps. With ten minutes remaining Hamilton was still quickest from Verstappen, Bottas, Ricciardo, Norris, Ocon, Gasly, Albon, Stroll and Perez tenth. On the soft tyre Gasly would move up to fourth. The McLaren's of Sainz and Norris were now 14th and 16th having suffered from times being deleted. The Williams drivers were now 18th and 20th and this would not change with the end of the session. Leclerc was able to improve to be fifth with Vettel now 12th. The session would end with Hamilton remaining fastest from Verstappen, Bottas, Gasly, Leclerc, Ricciardo, Ocon, Kvyat, Albon and Stroll tenth. With the end of the session it certainly saw the Williams team have to work through a lot of evaluations as well as having to contend with the issues with Nicholas's car.

Nicholas Latifi:
Nicholas would be first out running on the medium tyre pitting after a single installation lap. He would return still on the medium tyre and would set a 1m:21.702 to be 13th. This would change to be 12th as other drivers times were deleted. But Nicholas's time would also be deleted seeing him slowest without a time. Nicholas would set a 1m:19.764 to be 15th. A further improvement with a 1m:19.010 would see Nicholas 14th but he would drop to 16th and would pit after a ten lap run on the medium tyre. In the pits Nicholas was now 19th. Nicholas would return this time on the soft tyre. But after a two lap run without improvement he would pit. Nicholas would report a Brake by Wire Failure explaining why he had pitted.

Nicholas would drop to 20th and slowest and the team worked on resolving his issues. With forty five minutes remaining Nicholas would return again on the soft tyre. Nicholas would set a 1m:18.074 to now be 19th. A 1m:17.779 from Nicholas would see him move into 18th. He would pit after a eight lap run. Nicholas was now out of his car with his mechanics working on right front suspension or brakes currently 19th. He was able to return on the soft tyre and would complete a six lap run as the session ended.

George Russell:
George would be the last driver to come out in the session using the medium tyre. George would set a 1m:22.910 to be 19th just ahead of his team-mate. He would improve with a 1m:20.801 to be 17th while a 1m:20.407 would see him remain 17th. But even with an improvement with a 1m:19.619 would see George again 17th right behind his team-mate. Further improvements from George would set a 1m:18.756 to be 16th followed by a 1m:18.206 from George would see him 13th. But he would drop to 14th and would pit after a 12 lap run. This would become 17th as others went quicker. With fifty minutes remaining George would return on the soft tyre. George would set a 1m:17.516 to now be 14th, dropping to 15th. But his next lap was a 1m:17.201 seeing him now 13th. A 1m:16.780 from George on his sixth lap on the soft tyre would see him now 12th.

But he would drop to 13th to be behind Norris. George would complete a ten lap soft tyre run pitting currently 14th. He would drop to 15th as he returned with just over twenty minutes remaining. He was now on the hard tyre for what is most likely a longer run complaining to his engineer about his brakes. His engineer would report that the team was happy with his rear wing level while George said he would continue to do laps. But George would go off at Turn 13 but would continue and with eight minutes remaining had completed eleven laps on the hard tyre. he would drop to 17th as drivers used the soft tyre as he pitted after a fifteen lap hard tyre run. He would return and complete four laps on the medium tyre as the session ended.
