By Andrew Hooper
July 26 2019
The second Friday practice session for the 2019 German GP would again see the ROKiT Williams team work on evaluating the new updates they were been run on Robert Kubica's car. But they would also evaluate George Russell's car with both cars seen to be carrying flow viz on various parts of the car during the session. They would run all three tyre types between the pair over the course of the session. Again they would finish slowest of the field but it seemed that the team was not looking for outright pace during the session.
ROKiT Williams
German GP Friday 2nd Practice
Team Summary:
Norris would be the first driver to set a time in the second Friday practice
session for the 2019 German Grand Prix setting am1;16.407 only to see
Magnussen fastest only to see Norris set a 1m:15.806 with Norris on the hard
tyre. A 1m:15.673 from Grosjean also on the hard tyre. More drivers started
to set times with Sainz quickest with a 1m:15.457 only to see Raikkonen go
quicker on the medium tyre with a 1m:15.177. Stroll was third followed by
Sainz. But both Ferrari's would go quicker with Leclerc setting a 1m :14.589
followed by Vettel with Leclerc on the hard tyre and Vettel the medium.
Raikkonen was now third but Gasly would move ahead.
The hard and medium tyre were the only ones been used so far in the session
with an hour and twelve minutes remaining. Hamilton on the medium tyre would
set a 1m:14.456 to go quickest. Leclerc was second now followed by Bottas,
Vettel and Gasly. But Verstappen would go third fastest on the medium tyre.
Both Williams slowest with Robert having not set a time. Bottas was able to
move into second ahead of Leclerc. Hamilton was able to improve with a
1m:14.074 as Grosjean went second on the soft tyre. More drivers were now
running on the soft tyre with Vettel using this tyre to go fastest with a
1m:13.573. Hamilton was second followed by Grosjean, Stroll, Raikkonen,
Bottas, Hulkenberg, Perez, Leclerc and Verstappen tenth. But quite a few
drivers had yet to set soft tyre times.
Using the soft tyre Leclerc would go quickest with a 1m:13.449. Vettel was
second followed by Hamilton and Bottas. Vettel would return on the medium
tyre for short run then would switch to the soft tyre. But the session would
be red flagged when Gasly was to crash at the final corner with his car
going into the barrier damaging the left front suspension. There was just
ten minutes remaining as his car was returned to the pit lane. With the
restart there would be a rush of drivers coming out with a mix of hard and
medium tyres been used. So with the end of the session it would remain
Leclerc from Vettel, Hamilton, Bottas, Verstappen, Grosjean, Stroll,
Raikkonen, Hulkenberg and Perez tenth. For Williams George would finish
ahead of Robert in a session that was not one for outright pace but would
seem to be a series of evaluations on both cars.
Robert Kubica:
It was shown that Robert's car was been worked on by his mechanics at the
start of the session with his car up in the air. Robert would eventually
come out running on the medium tyre. He would pit after a single lap. Robert
had yet to set a time with an hour and five minutes remaining. Robert was
able to return to set his first timed lap with a 1m:17.485 to be ahead of
his team-mate. A small improvement with a 1m:17.439 as Robert pitted after a
seven lap run. With just over forty five minutes remaining Robert would
return running on the soft tyre. He would set a 1m:16.980 to remain behind
George. He would pit after a six lap run. Twenty five minutes remaining and
Robert would come out again on the medium tyre. He would complete five laps
before been forced to pit with Gasly's red flag. With the restart Robert
would return running on the soft tyre with more flow viz to be seen on his
car as the session ended. He would pit after a six lap run.
George Russell:
With ten minutes of the session completed George would come out running on
the hard tyre. George would set a 1m:17.879 and would improve with a
1m:17.608. With out improving George would pit after a six lap run. With
just under an hour remaining George would return to the track this time on
the soft tyre. George would set a 1m:16.900 to be 19th. George would pit
completing a practice pit stop. With thirty minutes remaining George would
return on a further run on the soft tyre. He would complete just three laps
switching to the hard tyre. He would be forced to pit after a five lap run
as a result of a red flag. George would return running on the hard tyre
again pitting after a single lap completing a practice pit stop. With the
end of the session George had remained in his pit.
