German GP: Williams Martini works on updates in FP1

The opening Friday practice session for the 2018 German GP would see the Williams Martini bring further updates to the troublesome FW41 as they strive to move forward in terms of performance. The end of the session would see Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin finish in 13th and 16th. The session was uneventful for both drivers but the major focus was on a new front wing that the team had brought looking at trying to improve the balance of the car.
Williams
Martini German GP Friday 1st Practice
Team Summary:
With the start of the opening Friday practice session for the 2018 German
Grand Prix would see a mix of tyres been used in the installation laps. The
first time of the session would come from Verstappen with a 1m:16.526 using
the medium tyre. For the Williams team they had a new front wing for this
weekend and would use the opening session to do back to back tests comparing
new and old. The team was still using the new rear wing that was introduced
at Silverstone. There were a few Friday drivers including Latifi for Force
India and Giovinazzi for Sauber. Verstappen had improved with a 1m:15.055.
More times would be set with Raikkonen now second followed by Hamilton,
Sainz and Bottas.
Bottas would improve to be second only to se Raikkonen move ahead. Ricciardo
would go quickest with a 1m:14.622 using the ultrasoft tyre with Vettel
going second. Hamilton would move up to third only to see Bottas move ahead.
After their first runs the Williams drivers would be 16th and 17th. Hamilton
was fastest with a 1m:14.181 followed by Ricciardo, Vettel, Bottas,
Verstappen, Raikkonen, Perez, Hulkenberg, Sainz, and Magnussen tenth. But
both Williams drivers would improve to be 12th and 13th. With forty minutes
remaining drivers would start to return and Bottas would improve on the
ultrasoft tyre setting a 1m:13.903. Their next runs would see both Williams
drivers maintaining their positions been 12th and 13th, but they would drop
to 13th and 14th. Verstappen would also improve with a 1m:13.714 also using
the ultrasoft tyre. But Hamilton would also improve with a 1m:13.529 to be
quickest.
Ricciardo on the ultrasoft tyre was now second with a 1m:13.699. With
fifteen minutes remaining the Williams drivers were now 12th and 15th.
Ricciardo was able to go quickest with a 1m:13.525 from Hamilton and
Verstappen. They would remain this way with the end of the session. Fourth
was Vettel followed by Bottas, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Magnussen, Leclerc, and
Hulkenberg tenth. For the Williams team they would complete the session
remaining in 13th and 16th.
Lance Stroll:
Lance would also go out for his installation lap but was on the medium tyre.
After a two lap run he would pit. Lance would return this time on the
ultrasoft tyre. He was running slowly doing some aero testing for the team.
Lance would pit briefly allowing for checks to be made. Lance would pit
again this time taking on the new front wing. Lance would complete his run
and pit after a four lap run. Lance would return still using the ultrasoft
tyre and would set a 1m:20.881. He would improve with a 1m:16.737 to move
ahead of his team-mate and be 15th. But Lance would set a 1m:16.272 to find
himself 12th. Lance would pit after a ten lap run on the ultrasoft tyre.
Lance would return for his next run using new ultrasoft tyres. Lance would
drop to 16th but would improve with a 1m:15.830 to again be 12th. Lance
would pit briefly after a five lap run. He would continue and was able to
set a 1m:15.659 to again be 12th. Lance would pit after completing a total
of thirteen laps on the ultrasoft tyre. Lance would drop to 13th as he
returned for a further run still using the used ultrasoft tyres. Lance had
found a fraction of time setting a 1m:15.629 but remained 13th.
Sergey
Sirotkin:
Sergey would commence the session using the soft tyre for his installation
lap. Sergey had come on the radio asking for some changes to be made to his
helmet to reduce some issues that he was suffering. Sergey had also come
back out using used soft tyre and would complete another two lap run. With
just over and hour remaining Sergey would return running on the ultrasoft
tyre and was able to set a 1m:17.467 to be 15th. Despite setting a 1m:16.946
Sergey would be 17th. Sergey would also improve with a 1m:16.277 to be 13th.
Sergey would also pit looking to return his set of Pirelli tyres. Like his
team-mate he would return running on new ultrasoft tyres. Sergey would also
improve with a 1m:15.876 to be 13th. He would drop to 15th and would also
pit briefly but would come back out to continue his ultrasoft tyre run. With
under ten minutes remaining Sergey would return still using the used
ultrasoft tyres. Sergey would drop to 16th and would remain there with the
end of the session.
