Team Summary:
In an opening Friday practice session for the 2017 Malaysian Grand Prix that was affected by rain the Williams team would see one of their drivers finish eighth but the other failed to set a time due to a technical issue. The second Friday session would start with a dry track with a mix of medium, soft, and super soft tyres in use. The drivers would quickly set times with Raikkonen going fastest with a 1m:33.486 running on the soft tyre. Vettel was second followed by Perez and Grosjean. Bottas was now third followed by the Williams of Felipe. Verstappen would set a 1m:32.739 to go quickest. Ricciardo was now fourth while for Williams their drivers were now in sixth and ninth but were on the softer super soft tyre.

At the front Vettel would go quickest with a 1m:32.566 followed by Verstappen and Raikkonen. Well into their run on the supers soft tyre both Williams drivers were able to improve with Felipe seventh and Lance eighth. Hamilton and Bottas were fifth and sixth but both had off track moments seeing both having to pit. Both Red Bulls were on the super soft tyre with Ricciardo going quickest with a 1m:32.099 with Vettel second and Verstappen third. Vettel had improved with a 1m:32.456 as he completed a longer run of the soft tyre. Both Ferrari's were also out on the super soft tyre with Vettel going quickest with a 1m:31.261 to push Raikkonen down into second. For Williams their drivers were in tenth and twelfth with forty five minutes remaining.

With forty minutes remaining the order was Vettel, Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Verstappen, Hamilton, Bottas, Hulkenberg, Ocon, Palmer, Felipe, Alonso, Vandoorne and Lance thirteenth. But Alonso would move up to fifth behind Verstappen. The final driver to complete their super soft tyre run was Perez. He would finish in eighth. This would see the Williams drivers now twelfth and fourteenth with both cars in the pits. Drivers were now coming back out for their race fuel runs. Verstappen was able to improve to be close to his team-mate but still in fourth. The session would be red flagged with Grosjean crashing with what looked like a right rear tyre failure when the Hass went over a drain cover that had been flipped up by cars running before the Hass. With the FIA looking at the area where the drain cover had come off it was announced that the session would not recommence.

For the Williams team both cars would finish outside the top ten with Felipe twelfth and Lance fourteenth. At least both drivers were able to get through the session without any issues with only Lance having a lockup that saw him pit.

Felipe Massa:
Felipe would be the first Williams driver to take to the track running on the super soft tyre with his car repaired. Felipe would set a 1m:34.631 to be fourth. Felipe would drop to fifth then seventh. Felipe would improve with a 1m:33.893 to move up into sixth. Ocon would move ahead seeing Felipe seventh. Felipe would continue to improve setting a 1m:33.807 remaining in seventh. After a nine lap run Felipe would pit. Having drop to ninth Felipe would return running on a new set of super soft tyres. Felipe would set a 1m:33.394 to now be eighth 1.2 seconds off the quickest time. He would drop to tenth now 2.1 seconds off the pace. Felipe would continue his run on the super soft tyre. Felipe would also pit after a six lap run. After a short stop Felipe would return running on the used super soft tyres but he would pit. Felipe had been behind Grosjean when he went off and was lucky not to hit any debris.

Lance Stroll:
Lance would join his team-mate out on the track also using the super soft tyre. Lance would set a 1m:35.062 to be seventh dropping to eighth. As others went quicker Lance would drop to twelfth but he would also improve to be ninth with a 1m:34.217. Lance would drop down the times to be eleventh with fifteen minutes of the session completed. Lance would also find time setting a 1m:33.818 to be eighth right behind his team-mate. Lance would also pit after ten laps on the super soft tyre. Prior to pitting he would have a small off track moment running wide. Lance was now twelfth and would return for another run on new super soft tyres. Lance would have a lockup at the final corner flat spotting his front tyre seeing him pit. In his pit he would drop to fourteenth. Lance would also return on the used super soft tyres for his longer runs. But he would pit after a single lap but would return. He would pit with the red flag.
