Bristol Bears are likely to have sore heads when they host Bath in the Prem Cup this Friday. On their first visit to the Rec since last season’s semi-final they suffered the same outcome last Saturday. Despite catching Bath cold early on, they succumbed to Bath’s power, discipline and a well-timed “bomb squad” refresh, this time to heavier defeat. Friday may be a different competition, but defeat will be fresh in their minds. As will the failure to get under Bath’s skin and van Graan’s comments about yellow cards. How will they react for the rematch?
Pat Lam will probably see this game as a chance to clear the hangover. His comments about his squad’s efforts after the match were complimentary but he also noted discipline as an area to improve. I suspect behind closed doors he could be more forthright, not wanting a repeat of Bears’ high penalty count from the Prem tie.
Last year for the home cup match Bristol went strong. A mix and match Bath selection held them to 21-21 at half time. After that the scoring was one way only, a Bailey hamstring injury disrupting Bath’s backs and Bristol making the most of their forward edge, winning 40-21. Now, with several injuries and a smaller squad, will Lam feel the need to field a front-line selection again?
He may demand a more disciplined approach but the gameplan is unlikely to vary much. In front of a home crowd Bristol will hope their chaos rugby can prevail this time, especially if Bath chose a development selection as they mostly did last season.
Bath too have their injuries to contend with, chief of them the absence of backup flyhalves Donoghue and Sam Harris. Will van Graan entrust the role to the young and inexperienced Linegar or convert a back from another position? Could De Glanville, who has had a few minutes at 10 already this season be the starter, with Linegar primed to come off the bench? Whoever gets the gig there is an argument for experience alongside which suggests Butt or perhaps Chris Harris at centre and Carr-Smith at scrum half.
Last season’s successful Cup run and eventual triumph brought Bath’s first silverware for 17 years and primed the ascent to triple glory. Having lost the opening round to Exeter Chiefs the coaching staff will know a win is essential to have any chance of similar progress in the tournament this year.
For all that I expect the lineup, which is to be coached by Ryan Davis, will mostly follow last year’s policy of game time for the wider squad. That suggests the likes of Spandler, Sela, Cuckson (to be recalled from loan) Staddon, Green, Cowan, Hennessy, Emmens and Offiah will feature, with maybe a senior forward or two to reinforce. With a few locks injured I doubt last year’s Captain Richards will be risked, but this may be the moment to ease Ted Hill back into action for twenty minutes or so. In Richards’ absence I would opt for Staddon as skipper, or perhaps Chris Harris.
At Ashton Gate Bears must be favourites. Bath though will want to show that their victory last year, fully using squad depth, was no fluke. I back them to play with intensity and verve. It could be quite some match!

I read the headline and thought PG you were commenting on the response on the Bears Board after Saturdays game!
I have to say I would like Bath to focus/concentrate on the Premiership and Europe.....and to really go for a development squad for the Premiership Cup. The Club will only benefit by giving younger players more game time.
It is their time to step forward and play up.

BSJ - I think Bath will chose ( largely) a development selection. Their hand may be forced in one or two positions though where injuries and AI callups leave a paucity of choice.

That’s a very accurate summary PG. Personally I think that JvG will continue to use the Prem cup as a development resource as in the past reinforcing the side with a few senior players. What Bristol do is anyone’s guess but I somehow doubt he will risk key backs given his issues in the senior squad.
I suspect he might well follow the Bath Uni selection policy who have had a strong start to the season. That might indicate James Linegar at 10, Austin Emens and Tyler Offiah on the wings and Jack Woods at full back. Should be a spicy affair - I would imagine Will Butt and Chris Harris may be the preferred centre combination with TdG at fullback to give some much needed experience down the spine to what I would imagine will be a young inexperienced team entering a hostile atmosphere (especially given the reaction to the defeat on Saturday on their board) - Linegar to start at 10 for me.
Depending on how Charlie Ewels is recovering I would imagine will determine whether Ewan Richards is risked - otherwise I would expect a very forward thinking developmental 23.
On another note I see young Cuckson played a lot of minutes for Scarlets in South Africa - hopefully that experience will have helped in his development greatly.

Whichever young squad players are picked alongside a few more familiar faces in need of minutes, this game will only benefit their development (whatever the final score) and as such the club as a whole. Great opportunity for a few of them to put their hands up as others did last year. COYBaaaaath!

Very nice preview, I'd forgotten we played them in the cup last year as well, and that mention of Bailey's injury, can't help but think that may have been the sliding doors moment, as it opened the door for Donoghue to come in and usurp him in the squad. Ironically now Ciaran is out we'll have to see if young Linegar can do a similar job in stepping up to the plate.
In terms of selection, I'd like to see us sprinkle in a healthy amount of experience to go alongside the younger players, so something like:

Jeanes, Richards
Cowan, Green, Staddon
TCS, Linegar
Butt, Harris
Offiah, Emens, Griffin

Yep, always a tricky one how to format rugby lineups, I went for a "birds eye view" as opposed to in numerical order, so Green is at 8 and Emens is at 15.

That’s close to spot on for me, though we have two very good 15s coming through in Jack Woods and now Sam Winters who is very quick and on try scoring form from the bench.

Noticed Max Pearce warming up as extra on Saturday and hasn't played for uni side for few weeks so expect him to be next in line at Hooker. Similar to Kepu Tom Carr-Smith is bench back up to Spencer so wonder if he'll be protected or start and Le Roux on bench.
Wonder for those on loan which is better them coming back to Bath for this or few weeks or remaining with Worcester who are playing on Friday & 15th November.

If push came to shove Jasper Spandler could be recalled as well. Max Pearce is also an option as you say.

I get what people are saying about risking players who are likely going to be involved when the league resumes, in an ideal world I'd pick a 23 that is made entirely of fringe players but still competitive, it's just a question of whether selecting so many players from the academy/Bath University could leave us exposed.
If we can get Spandler back to start then I'd be perfectly happy, he's always impressed when given a chance, Pearce could take the 16 shirt.
I hope Linegar gets another game at 10, but he would need to be surrounded by experience, so having Harris, Butt and TCS would help take the pressure off. If we want to protect TCS then I'd be happy for Le Roux to start, but again I'd want him with an experienced player at 10, of which there aren't really any obvious candidates.

Yes there is a risk of injury in playing people in Competitive matches but injuries also happen in training.

Raff Weston will certainly get some stick! I think he had some injury issues but is a decent goal kicker.
TdG at 10, is he goal kicking as well? Kepu and Billy must be a scary prospect for the Bristol front row.

Woods apparently can play fly half as well, so you'd think he would be another kicking option. Le Roux might also be capable of stepping in if needed.
I expected to see Austin Emens & Thompson Cowan. Injured?

Emens was named at fullback for the University of Bath match on Wednesday night against Loughborough which they lost 43-26. It was only him, Alfie Griffin & Alex Ridgeway from Bath in team and he seems to have played more on wing for them with Winters or Woods at fullback. Cowan has been playing for Rams rather than Champ but hasn't been in the team last few weeks so may have an injury.

Yeah agreed on both fronts.
Cowan has actually looked very lively when given a chance, not bad for our 11th(?) choice back rower.
Interesting that Emens has gone from getting several starts in the 1st team last year, to battling it out in the university team again. Have to say I've never been totally convinced by him, now that we've added Arundell and Carreras (and Offiah, Griffin and Woods with another year under their belts) he looks to have fallen significantly down the pecking order.

Had hoped to watch this one on the box. Anyone know the logic behind TNT not showing either of the Prem Cup games tonight? No other rugby on and not showing any domestic men's game this weekend it seems.

Does seem like such an odd decision, almost like the organisers are admitting defeat on not being able to garner interest in the games.
Broadcasting the games on TV obviously costs money, so they need to be fairly confident that they'll get decent viewing numbers to justify that expense. The fact that there has been no obvious attempt to drum up interest in the competition means only the die hard fans are likely to tune in.
If they were actually trying to be smart about it they could try and tie it in with the general bump in interest there is in the sport during the Autumn internationals. Schedule the games either side of the England match, then you could sell the PRC games as the appetiser/dessert to the main course of the game at Twickenham. Given everything is on the same broadcaster for the first time it really wouldn't be that hard to cross-promote these matches.
I am sure I have seen somewhere TNT are showing highlights of this weekends round of matches, but can't find anything on any of the channels. It does seem a bit strange given they have the broadcast rights.
TNT are showing 3 Autumn Internationals on Saturday and Sarrries v Quins womens on Sunday. I doubt the PREM cup hols much interest on top.

Sounds like a real thumping in the end, like the 1st 15 game last week it sounds like Bears have offered very little. 3 wins for Bath vs Bristol in 3 weeks across the various comps, great work lads.

A very satisfying result, I'm regretting my decision not to go to the game. Listening to Mr Derrick of Radio Bristol was very frustrating.
Just seen on Alfie's socials that he went to a Halloween party after the game last night (with TdG and Ross Moloney as the 3 from The Hangover), hopefully a sign that the Bath medical team didn't feel the need to send him off for immediate scans/put him on crutches.

Good interplay, handling, delayed passes, etc. in that try. Also it sounds like TDG was excellent off the tee even out wide and I’m less worried that we have him and Mojo and Redpath who can cover 10 at a push. On top of Russell/Donoghue/Carreras/Linegar, that’s a lot of resilience.

These are the guys that do the University BUCS streaming, they do it on a budget and from a single scaffold tower. They have there own style I agree but usually get player form one of the clubs in co-commentary. Kepu has done it and was excellent. That might be a bit harsh.
It's not a joke competition in my opinion, it has it's faults, e.g. Championship clubs barred and TNT coverage but it's great to see our academy players in action representing Bath, the club managed it very well last season within the spirit of the competition and the players clearly have enjoyed it and stepped up. I miss the old A league but this is a good alternative.

So we play some teams in the league at least 4 times a season now? Possibly 5 and maybe even 6 if you meet in Europe. Wouldn't it be good if we could mix it up? Y'know, with teams from, say, another English league?
