The usual contrived headline play on the name of our competitors this weekend!
However, nothing usual in the Premiership at the moment. The first-round results saw two home wins, two away wins and a dramatic draw. Obviously the first two games may be less representative as some of the “better” players are not available because of compulsory Lions resting period (obviously for some reason does not count for Owen Farrell) and of course southern hemisphere players in the Rugby Championship.
What was an interesting feature of Round 1 games was how close games were in the first 40 – 60 minutes but then one team or other marched away making the end score look like a comfortable win.
This was relevant for Sale v Gloucester where at half time Gloucester were leading 5 – 10 but failed to score any points in the second half and went on to lose 27 – 10 with the scoreline “flattered” by a try in the final minute by Sale to secure the 5 points.
George Ford has continued his excellent form from the summer tour in Argentina and was a well-deserved Man of the Match against Gloucester.
Bath stumbled in the first half against Harlequins but came through very strongly in the second half reaffirming their reputation as winners and try scorers in the third and fourth quarters.
Bath Team
Bath will be Missing Finn Russell and Will Stuart on compulsory Lion’s resting period and Sante Carreras and Thomas du Toit who are on National duty.
In addition, there are a number of injured players including the long term injured Sam Harris, the more recently injured Ciaran Donoghue, Jaco Coetzee and Bernard van der Linde
Will Muir, Alfie Barbeary, Arthur Green and Will Jeanes have been injured and may be available although I have assumed not for selection.
I have decided to pick the starting 15 from the match from last week as the continuity will be helpful. Also, the same bench, which I know is a bit boring and won’t happen.
I was tempted to start Harris and Hill but decided to leave alone especially as Max Ojomoh will almost certainly be flyhalf again this weekend and the more continuity around him the better.

Sale has some injury concerns, like all teams, with Vermeulen doubtful and along with their centres and they are of course one Curry short.
We need to beware Sale's aggressive defence. remember how they nilled Bristol at Ashton Gate last year? Bristol's frustration eventually cost them a 0-38 thrashing.
With B Curry jackaling and Bamber & Vermeulen spoiling lineouts, Ford's territorial and goal kicking, they are probably the hardest to play in the Prem.
Assuming there's no knocks we don't know about I would make a couple of changes to the team this week. Mentioned in another thread but this feels like a game for Hill and Underhill in the back row. I'd also bring Frost in on the bench for some more experience at the set piece and to hopefully safeguard against a repeat of last week's line out issues. Also think it's helpful not to leave him waiting too long to get involved as a new signing.

Excellent preview, I'm expecting Sale to be a far tougher proposition than Quins.
Given both Hill and Muir were listed as touch and go for last week, I'm hopeful that JvG was just holding back Will so that he was 100% ready for this game, as his aerial ability will be crucial against Roebuck.
Would expect both Muir and Barbeary to feature if fully fit. This match appears to be tailor made for Sam Underhill to get in George Ford's face and close his space down.
We did the double over Sale last season and have a pretty good record against them and need to stick to our game plan.
As shown last Friday the presence of a strong, powerful and dynamic bench is crucial.
Just checked the forecast for Friday, looks like Sale will be bringing the North West weather down with them...
Winning in those kind of conditions is built on defence, so I'd actually be tempted to bring Harris into the starting XV given his tackling prowess. Also further strengthens the case for fielding an Underhill/Hill/Barbeary back row, every inch we can get over the gainline will be vital.
Yeh, I think it'd be a good idea, bbb, to not push Lawrence too hard too soon and to utilise an incredibly experienced option in the 13 shirt. Given how we don't have any natural 10s available, Ollie would be a fine option in the 22 shirt, to cover centre and wing.
I'd go:
Obano Dunn Griffin Roux Ewels Hill Underhill Reid
Spencer Mojo Muir Redpath Harris Arundell TdG
Frost VV Sela Maloney Pepper TCS Lawrence Barbeary

An excellent point - Harris ideally suited to start.
Like the back row too. Bayliss and Ollie off the bench to punch a few holes in the final quarter gets my vote!
With that forecast it’s definitely a game for the forwards, unfortunately Sale can match us in that department. Not ideal to be playing Sale without a recognised 10 either.

Ever the pessimist.
I don’t think it’s a pessimistic view, as far as I’m aware Sale have a very good pack and as we aren’t at full strength in that department they can match us.
Surely you agree that playing without a recognised 10 isn’t ideal?
Not saying we can’t win, but if we are to win our forwards will need a 10/10 performance.
Could make an argument for butt and harris at centre but with mojo having to play 10 I would be tempted by having some continuity in the midfield.
Can start mixing things up when finn and santi available the week after. Defo would give ollie a week off soon rather than pushing out luck.
I would go something like :
Tdg, arundell, lawrence, redpath, muir, mojo, spencer
Beno, kepu, griffin, roux, ewels, hill, underhill, reid
Bench: dunn, fvw, sela, malony, pepper, tcs, harris, aflie
Do agree with OB that not having a recognised 10 in those weather conditions is a big problem. Redpath and tdg need to step up and help manage the game. Spencer will do his bit.
I am also in the Dyson and that does look a bit better.....
I remember an evening game years ago against Gloucester when we won 3 - 0 in terrible conditions. Despite the score line it was in fact a thrashing, if you know what I mean.
I remember the 0-16 loss to London Irish (did Bendy get charged down?) being the coldest, wettest and most miserable I've ever felt at the Rec. Think I stayed to hear the final whistle, but I may have heard it from Great Pulteney Street.

Blimey that's brought back a memory I thought I'd banished forever.
I remember a bitterly cold night watching an u20s (England v France I think) game in the West stand, bought tickets thinking cover would be a good idea but they were too near the front in the open.
Started raining and driven rain and drips off the roof saturated my coat, wife left at half time, invested in a coat designed for fishermen following that, best lesson I ever learned!

I'm not disputing the facts, just the interpretation. You won't find many Sale fans expecting a win.

Sale going 5:3 bench without DDP, Vermulen and TCurry who would all be in their first choice squad feels like a big advantage again this week given the second and back row options we have to call on.
Yeh, our bench, like last week, looks much stronger. Fact they've got Ford (and Roebuck, who I believe is brilliant) means it starts pretty evenly on paper, but over the 80, at home, on a potentially wet pitch, bringing on our power should swing it our way. Having Underhill and Barbeary fresh and marauding around for the last quarter could be the difference.
Easiest way to get a player dropped from the squad? Have ere call for them to start. Sorry Chris Harris.
No Chris Harris in the squad. Is that a sign they want him fit to face Gloucester next week? Very pleased to see Miles has a second half replacement, he was brilliant last week but tough doing that again for 80 minutes. Looking forward to seeing Alfie in a Bath shirt again, Still can't forget his appearance during that wonderful weekend in June !

Possible but with Finn (and Santi) back next week we're pushing Ojomoh back into the centre mix so there's already not enough shirts to go around. My guess would be it's more just rotation and making sure Butt doesn't have to wait for a run out. He's also more flexible as a bench option and has played a bit of 13 and wing whereas not sure Harris has ever played away from 13
I'm excited about this, that's a really strong 15 and 23. Friday night lights should be fun - as long as we don't have too many numpties around us determined to drink rather than watch.

That was terrible I took my socks off so my son could put them on his hands because they were so cold
Surely we won't see Carreras in a Bath shirt next week? He plays Saturday 4th Oct and then will be playing Wales on 9th November - I would prefer him to have a bit of a rest tbh, he can't have had much time off since last season?

Makes sense to play finn and stuart next week and give tdt and carreras a week off?
Decision will probably be left with the medics/ s&c guys and jvg will trust that guidance.
I guess tdt and carreras will in effect have an off-season through feb/March during 6 nations?
We have the luxury of managing these players really well as so much depth all across the squad.
Charlieboa1 More confident after seeing the respective squads but ford pulling the strings and roebuck chasing high balls will be problematic for us.
Muir is a big miss.
Huge ask of mojo to run the show on a nasty eve of weather when the pack won't have it all their way.
May well need the bang off the bench to pull us through.
Agree Ford can be a maestro in those conditions, and for a change we will not rule the skies..I also hope that the strong bench will pull us through
gaz59 The predicted conditions will make it a massive test of Ojomoh's transition to 10
It's not a tradition. though its an emergency measure but you are right it could go horribly wrong as the weather negates Max's greatest strength, his running passing game. Only thing is that it equally negates their back 3, if I were Ford I'd kick it behind Joe at every opportunity.
I'm a bit worried about this one.

Good point, I'm not clear about Arundell's weakness though, I think it's just the contestable ball that he fails to win, his catching otherwise is sound.

Expect Spencer to kick EVERYTHING in the air and de Glanville to perhaps step in at 10 to kick long from 10 if need be, as he seems to have a decent length on his boot. Ford will target JCok and Arundell, especially with Carpenter and Roebuck in pursuit. It'll be a difficult night for all players under the high ball, so I'd expect that to be an area where mistakes are made and Sale might gain a little ascendancy. As long as we're on top at the resulting set pieces, we'll be alright.
The claim that Arundell needs to work on his basics is fair, but he's only 22. His explosion onto the scene in his teens seems to have created a stick to beat him with. Of course, he's not the finished article- few players are at his age. He might drop high balls, and we know how Borthwick prefers a workhorse Freeman/Muir-type winger, but I'd prefer to focus on what Arundell can do at his age (which is uncoachable) rather than the bits that he'll develop between now and his mid-20s/peak.
He's the same age as IFW, I'd argue with equally good attacking games (Arundell might even be quicker) but IFW doesn't get slated as much for his less than perfect skill under the high ball (IFW, like PBB at Exe, seems to be a flapper, which won't work long term internationally!). For some reason, perhaps linked to the pre 23 RWC malaise and the 5 tries v Chile (not his fault they were walk ins) Arundell gets a lot more stick. I've heard how some think he's over hyped- maybe, but that's not his fault. Just give him time, let him make some mistakes in defence, but celebrate a great young talent in attack. He's still so young, which seems to get forgotten.
Tonight is a massive tactical challenge. Stick Finn in there, and we'd have every right to anticipate a win. But getting out of this one with 4, let alone 5 points, would rank as highly as any win of the JVG era. Nervous.

Ford's dislike for Bath seems to inspire him whenever he plays us, he will no doubt have a good game. If we win this game it will be on the basis of a top notch performance by our forwards.
Yes, I would be confident of a win with our preferred line up but without Muir & Finn it will be more of a test. I still think we will win with our bench but it could be tight.
I'm going to be there, along with the OH's sister and family, so we'll probably lose! Sorry!
Ford rarely has a poor game these days. Carpenter is the best proper full back in the league, and Roebuck is developing into an excellent winger. However we have the better 9, and better centers.
Our pack overall, including the bench is stronger, but the weather will be a leveller. We should have enough to get us over the line especially as we are at home.
I hope our players have been practicing sliding over the try line from the 22.
If the forecast is accurate then even with the Rec's improved playing surface the pitch could resemble a paddling pool after not too long.
That being said, if we can focus on our carrying angles/latching and hang onto the ball, these kind of wet conditions can give a bit of an advantage to the team which wins the gainline battle, trying to stop ballcarriers that are super slippery who then also slide when they hit the ground can be very difficult.

I think we all agree it's going to be a kick-fest tonight and I'm sure Ojomoh will have been primed for this all week. It'll be tough, but there's no better 9 in world rugby for a makeshift 10 to be playing alongside.
Fully expect Spencer to step up tonight. If he goes well and is allowed to influence the game in the way we know he can, I think we'll have just about enough.
Bench, again, looks to be a bit stronger than the oppo, which will also be crucial.
.... also - for the first time in a long time, we can feel confident that the Rec crowd will be a genuine '16th' player this evening. Friday night lights are a bit more uninhibited than Saturdays, and the general goodwill towards the team and the club should shine through this evening. Looking forward to a proper ding-dong!

Excellent first half tactically by Bath, Sale oddly trying to play too much rugby in the middle at times when they should have been kicking the leather off the ball with the wind behind them.
'Worrying' was JVG's verdict on the injuries - but a namecheck for Ewan Richards getting an opportunity. He won't let us down if those boys are out a while.
That seemed like the longest game of rugby I've seen in a while. Not sure how many TMO or injury breaks there were.. . We deserved the 5 points, but fair play to Sale defence. Hoping to have dried off by the morning
Sale really had their tails up after their second try. Thought we were going to see a last minute Sale win.
That finish from Ojomoh was immense. How can Austin think that moving Freeman to outside centre is worthwhile when you can bring him in instead.
Tough going losing our starting 4, 5 and 6. Especially given how reliable they've been over the past season or two. Guess this is time for Richards to take his opportunity.
Sitting in The Hop Pole, soaking wet with a pint of Bellringer. Immediate thoughts:
- Spencer was immense with the exception of not taking 3 points early in the 2nd half
- Pepper is getting better and better Ditto Miles.
- Was the try Max's first touch inside the Sale 22?
- Losing one second row is unfortunate, losing three in one game is a big problem
Credit to Sale for their physicality and defence. We made heavy weather - pun intended - of the 5 points but much of that was due to the opposition.
I think Sale showed that they will be there at the sharp end. A real armwrestle of a match which we could easily have lost. But we didn't. We are starting to play like champions do - expecting to win and it is (after all these years) great to see that coming back.
To lose one lock is happenstance, to lose two is coincidence but to lose 3 is unfortunate. Hopefully all three will return soon.
What was clear is that a matching pack and foul weather nullifies our strengths. It was deeply satisfying that we worked out how to win without them against a genius of a 10 playing at the peak of his considerable powers in a very good side.
My MotM - Spenno. A masterclass of how to control a rugby match in wet weather.
Feels like that could have been a very costly win. Don’t think we’ll see Hill for a while, Ewels didn’t look in great shape and seemed like Roux gutted it out to last as long as he did. Think the lack of shoving power didn’t do Sela and co any favours up front.
Spencer was basically faultless. 10/10, A+ take your pick. Handling skills and threat of Ojomoh and Lawrence was a real difference maker that Sale’s midfield couldn’t get anywhere near. Shame we couldn’t get Lawrence more opportunities second 40.
Shout out to WillGriff John as well. Idiot behaviour to coat his teammates a point they worked their backsides off to earn. Really like the look of Ben Bamber though and Ford is just a remarkable rugby player
Arundell impressed me this evening under the high ball.
Brilliant game from Spencer.
Utter stupidity from WGJ which may have cost Sale a BP.
Couldn’t believe Oz suggesting moving Lawrence to 12, he’s a world class 13 and each time England have played him at IC, it’s understandably taken him a game to adjust!
England now have options at 12 with Dingwall, Seb Atkinson, Ojomoh and other fast emerging players so why play someone out of position!
Would never comment negatively on the ref tbh, he / she will always be trying their best and the conditions were not easy. I don’t think he made any particularly bad decisions.
He used his TMO a lot and was very lenient - probably both to Pepper and then again on Willgriff John twice. Sale definitely annoyed him in the first half.

BathMatt53 I think that WGJ will be cited for that and get a ban.
He should not have been in position to commit the second foul. Should have been carded for the first.

I was actually holding my breath in the 2nd minute when Peoper cleared the guy out onto his head - I would have given a yellow for that personally but the TMO seemed to advise Woodthorpe that it was OK. It looked awkward to me (more than a pen) despite others being involved.
Assuming we are without our two first choice locks & effectively our best replacement in Hill for quite a while how do we lineup? Richards will clearly feature & won’t let us down. Who else?
If roux, ewels and hill out i imagine it will be malony and richards at lock with jeanes/cuckson on bench.
Great opp for richards to step up, he is class. More of a 6 in my mind (and he said so before last season) but been used more as a lock due to the imbalance in the squad.
Bayliss has played lock a few times but I would rather trust the specialists. Jeanes played in the prem a few times last season and didn't let us down.
I think the key is we have the options of stuart and tdt back for the next few weeks. You can afford a slightly depowered engine room with those guys locking the scrum out.
If we can get any of ewels/roux/hill back for bris in 3 weeks I think we will be fine to ride this out but worried at least one or two of those injuries looked relatively serious.
I have said many times that tighhead lock cover for roux is the main squad weakness so hoping the fact he ploughed on means it may only be a week or 2 he needs to recover.
Depends on how severe the injuries are doesn't it. Jeanes will get a few games but you wonder if Cuckson would be recalled. Bayliss would be a stop gap. Has to be Richards.
Hill is a big loss, his line out work was excellent yesterday, also big learning curve scrum time for Billy Sela up against Bevan Rodd who went up in my estimation.

Got the feeling from JvG’s initial comments Ted Hill sounds very serious and long term- the fact Charlie and Quinn played on hopefully is better news. Like with Bris players hope for a speedy recovery.
Not sure how much the Worcester agreement is two way but rather than recalling Cuckson could you borrow someone like Joussain who has Prem experience (was with Tigers last season)
Back row seems covered with Bayliss, Staddon & Green.
Wish all 3 a speedy recovery (preferably after the 18th October! 😂)
Good old fashioned rugby, ignore the weather and just get on with it.
Two things stick in my mind, apart from the stoic East Stand and terraces support, Ford's long distance kick, and the last try. p.s. an evening of weather when I don't regret not being there. Do as been said, hope that the injuries are soon mended and not season ending?

This was exactly my thought when running through the second row options, Richards and Maloney would still be a great combination, and I think with either of those 2 at TH, you could afford to play one of our taller, more athletic back rowers at lock, Bayliss or Staddon springs to mind.

I agree, they will struggle a bit but that's part of the development we need. If you take a look at our pack the likes of Sela, Tuipuloto, Jeanes, Cuckson, Staddon, Green, Griffin. Kirk, Richards all young and home grown.

Personally I haven’t seen anything from Cuckson that makes me think he is even close to being ready for regular Premiership rugby. Just my opinion of course. I would leave him to mature at Worcs for the season, even with a locks mini crisis. I think that Staddon has also covered lock? (May have dreamed that one).

According to 'All Rugby' he hasn't started at lock, always been 6 or 7 may have done so as a sub though.
I sort of agree re Cuckson but he hasn't been a disaster still only 21 and a specialist lock so might be worth finding out in the odd game but you are right not week in week out.

Ref decisions. For the first WillGriff John penalty, the ref said that it wasn’t a high degree of danger and there was an attempt to wrap, which for me is the decision that should have been a yellow as it looked like he twisted in with his shoulder and his arm was tucked. Second one I think it was more his forearm and elbow that made contact with Underhill’s head and while it was flying in not long after just having been penalised for this first, the lesser of the two. But not being yellowed for the first meant it was inevitable for the second.
On the first, his right arm was clearly tucked in and he led with his shoulder. Minimum should have been yellow.
Given he got away with that one, though penalised, that he repeated the action with force later should have meant a straight red.

Is that not something that the TMO should be flagging? Watching on the TV seemed fairly clear to me, I’m sure it wouldn’t have been at the ground.
BathMatt53 Personally I haven’t seen anything from Cuckson that makes me think he is even close to being ready for regular Premiership rugby. Just my opinion of course. I would leave him to mature at Worcs for the season, even with a locks mini crisis. I think that Staddon has also covered lock? (May have dreamed that one).

I feel sure he was a lock / flanker coming through and moved to the back row permanently by the time he got to the first team squad? If not I’m sharing dreams with Matt which raises some questions
OutsideBath If any of the injuries at lock are serious and long term would JvG go to the transfer market for a medical replacement?
Particularly if it's two of them yes you'd imagine. If it's one medium term I think it's focus on Richards/Jeanes. I don't know the injury replacement deal with Harris given Lawrence is back.

I think we can spend up to £400k on injury replacements so even if Harris is on half of that there should be space to bring in someone decent if needed

What's the position on Harris using joker money, given that Ollie is back faster than expected?

I thought I had heard that because OL was out for ~6 months that straddle the 2 12 month salary cap years that Bath were able to use the injury cover limit even once OL was fit. But can’t remember the source…
tigersimon But OL wasn’t injured for 8 weeks of this season!
JVG wouldn’t publicly explain the situation when asked!
OL was named in the team to play Munster which was 10 weeks into the current salary cap years which started on July 1st.

“3.36. The entitlement to an Injured Player Credit shall be lost if the Injured Player is selected by a club for a match day squad in any match (i) before twelve weeks has elapsed from the date the Player was certified as having been injured in the Injury Certificate, or (ii) during the first eight weeks of the current Salary Cap Year, where an Injured Player Credit applied to the same injury in the previous Salary Cap Year.”
So Ollie’s situation seems to fulfil the criteria for having injury cover.

Great.
But it is a bit bonkers.
Agree - the first prem game is never within the first 8 weeks of 1st July is it? first game was 30th Sept 2023, then 20th Sept 2024. So as long as your player misses the little cup games they are fine...
..then of course assuming that you haven't used up all of the credit for the previous year I assume you can split it across seasons?
Bath haven't done anything wrong but I with jayeatman - seems bonkers.

It certainly has turned out to look strange, but let’s remember that when Ollie got injured it was expected that he could back towards the end of 2025 or the start of 2026. It could not be counted on that he would recover in such an incredible time, so forward planning of a replacement needed to take place.

Also worth bearing in mind that Chris Harris was picked up as a free agent. Given his playing relationship with Russell and Redpath, I'm sure the club moved fast to sign him before he went south.
Absolutely, I think Harris was the perfect decision as injury cover.
The bonkers bit is that we can still claim his salary under injury dispensation despite Ollie being fit.

2020/21 Will Stuart

There is a desire that players have some degree of certainty that they will have a playing contract for a minimum period of time. So, even if someone returns sooner, we don't 'kick them to the street'.

It did cross my mind that Ollie's early return might mean a rapid exit for Harris, which would have been very tough on him.
Is anybody else slightly irritated by a lot of journalists and podcasters waxing lyrical about George Ford's 'masterclass' at the Rec? As good as he is in general and as impressive a bit of skill those drop goals were, if it was truly a masterclass why did Sale only score 3 points on 3 of their opportunities and 7 on one whilst Bath scored 7 on all 4 that they took? Sale supposedly had a slight advantage upfront and supposedly had a great rolling maul - not kicking for touch is criminal game mismanagement in the first half. Suppose instead of kicking the penalty which missed but led to the second drop goal they had scored from the lineout - 14-11 or 14-13 is much better than 14-9. Heaps more pressure on Bath. If we want to talk about tactical masterclasses we should look at Ben Spencer’s performance which rightly won MOTM and was the biggest difference between the sides.
(IMHO)

Two players are allowed to play well at the same time.

Of course they are but I actually don't think Ford played as amazingly as is being portrayed in a lot of the media. Probably 7/10 if you include a point for drop goal ability. His tactical kicking was mediocre (by his standards).
I don't know why I find the post match reporting so irritating. I'm glad the real masterclass was from Spencer as it meant Bath won which is what matters most.

Journalist are obsessed with the England No.10 position, so focus many stories around this, who should/shouldn’t be in the position. I’d expect many writing up Ford now are the same ones who wanted him out and Smith/Smith in previously…

The obvious thing to do is for England to pick Ben Spencer at 10. That would settle all the arguments.
