After all, tomorrow is another day….Gloucester vs Bath. TEAM
By Devonport Boy
October 10 2024
The quote “After all, tomorrow is another day” is from Gone with the Wind and is Scarlett O'Hara's personal motto. She repeats the line throughout the novel to avoid feeling guilty or helpless about her difficult circumstances. Yes, I know using a quote from a book written nigh on 90 years ago is stretching a point, but bear with me. The quote is a comforting maxim that means one may not be able to accomplish everything today, but they will have another chance, and we’ve certainly got one against Gloucester on Saturday.
Having said that, you don’t get too many chances to get it right in the Premiership these days. There used to be another oft-repeated maxim that held that it didn’t matter too much about results in the early games because there was plenty of time to assert yourself after Christmas. The trouble is that with a 10 team Premiership that headroom has diminished, and every result is significant if you have top 4 ambitions. It seems that the season has only just started, yet when the final whistle blows this weekend, we will already be 22%, or almost a quarter of the way through the season in “old money”! Not only that, but there are very few, if any, “banker” games anymore. 9 out of the 10 teams are highly competitive (and yes, I include Exeter in that category) and I’m pretty sure that Newcastle will spoil somebody’s day at least once this season, so we’ve got to go into every game with the best squad and optimum tactical approach to secure the most points possible and preferably a win.
In the first two rounds we got it pretty much right, but I think we all knew that the win at Welford Road came at a high price. In the Bristol game we missed the speed, arial ability and sheer finishing talent of Will Muir and the physical presence of Joe Cokanasiga. Pat Lam is a good coach, and no doubt used that in his preparation for the match. Such is the high level of expectation these days whenever Bath take the pitch, that the initial reaction to the 26-36 scoreline hit harder than it might have done in previous seasons (parking for a moment the fact that none of us enjoy losing to Bristol). Nevertheless, it’s important not to overreact. We had two tries disallowed on review and at least one more deemed to be held up, so it could be argued that had we displayed our usual precision in the “red zone” the result may have been different. I’m not trying to put an undeserved gloss on the result but would argue that a “touch on the tiller” is what we need for Gloucester, rather than a wholesale change in approach and personnel.
The other really pleasing aspect of the Bristol game was the continuing development of some of our “young guns”. Guy Pepper and Will Butt are both prodigious talents, but what about that try from Sam Harris? It reminded me very much of the young Nick Abendanon who was never afraid to be unpredictable and “have a go” when he thought it was on, even though it appeared at times that even his teammates weren’t sure what he was doing! It says much for Sam’s confidence and the culture that JvG has built in the team that he was prepared to play with such freedom and ambition.
So, what should we expect from Gloucester this weekend? Traditionally these games at Castle Grim have been hard fought forward-dominated wrestling matches. The old school “holy writ” at Gloucester used to be “the forwards shall win the game, the backs shall buy the beer” but all that is changing. The signing of the likes of Tomos Williams, Gareth Anscombe and the on-fire Christian Wade has helped attack coach James Lightfoot-Brown (ex - London Irish) to implement a much more expansive style of rugby which is delivering a lot of tries. It is of note that Gloucester’s sole win so far was against Bristol whom they outscored by 41-44 at Ashton Gate. No doubt the Gloucester coaches will have analysed our game against Bristol and will feel that a fast, all-court attack is the way to go. It’s Gloucester so we know they’ll not only throw the kitchen sink at us, but every other domestic appliance and the Shed too. Finn can certainly look forward to a warm welcome after last year!
Can we win this? Yes we can. I have no doubt that during training this week there will be a reaction from the kick in the nether regions delivered by Bristol and that JvG will channel that positively. We won’t see Will Muir for a while but hopefully Joe Cokanasiga will successfully complete his HIA protocols and be available. Cam looked sharp when he came on in the Bristol game and if he’s match fit I can see him starting at 12. That’s taking absolutely nothing away from Will Butt, I just think we will need Cam’s experience. Above all, I think we need to avoid giving Gloucester’s backs uncontested ball and the space to pick up speed. Without Will Muir to chase, that may need a rethink about the depth of our kick offs and box kicks. What is certain is that we have to take every chance that we get in the opposition “red zone”. Against this Gloucester team we can’t afford to be anything less than clinically precise in our finishing and I’m sure they’ll be working on that at Farleigh. I think it’ll be close but I’m going for Bath by 5. I hope I’m right!
I’m usually wrong but my early stab at the squad is:
No idea on selection this week. With the England camp going on this week a good chunk of first choice players haven’t trained with the club all week and who knows if they’re coming back match ready.
JvG has shown before he’s not afraid to rotate so possible we see something like
Obano
Dunn
Du Toit
Molony
Roux
Hill
Pepper
Coetzee
Schreuder
Russell
Cokanasiga
Redpath
Butt
McConnochie
TdG
Annett
van Wyk
Sela
Ewels
Bayliss
Barbeary
Spencer
Bailey
Excellent summary!
I completely agree on the kicking, especially the kick-offs, where Bristol had an age to make ground or clear. Also agree Coetzee deserves a start, he made yards every time he was involved last week.
Probably too early, but I'd love to see Tyler Offiah given a chance at some point.
If Cokanasiga isn’t fit I don’t have an issue with Offiah or Emens getting a chance depending on who is more ready for it. Could also see Butt moved wide and Bailey or Hennessy come in I suppose

I doubt there would be the same level of enthusiasm for Offiah if his father wasn't famous. It's certainly not merited on performance alone. He's fast, which is great, but that's about as much as he's shown. He's also 18. Austin Emens would be my choice with TdG restored to his best position at full back.

Yes, the JdP departure looks a bit more unwelcome/unplanned now! Roux can't be our heavy 2R every week! Don't mind Hill at lock as long as it doesn't weaken our scrum and lineout (can't get much weaker...) too much. Disappointed not to see Pepper- but guess that's the beauty of our depth. Pepper can have a rest and a Scottish int (Bayliss) and an English int (Unders) step in.
Interesting to see Emens picked ahead of McCon (has he a knock?). He was sharp in pre-season, looks like 7s has given him a real rugby brain, and I'm sure the Shed will give him a nice warm welcome.
Our big game players – TDT, Maloney, Spencer, Finn – need big games as Glos will be dangerous on the plastic. Unlike with Bristol, we need to dictate the type of game we want to play from minute 1.
P G Tips JdPs departure may explain the Hill selection at 4. Otherwise the 23 makes fair sense.
We'll need to shackle Glaws halfbacks and beware their pace on the wings.
PG
Bayliss and Reid followed by Underhill seems a good combination to put some pressure on 9/10
It’s true that we missed scoring 3 tries we might have had against Bristol & their try at the end of the first half was the result of a dubious decision but I don’t think anyone can deny that they completely outplayed us in the first half, being considerably sharper in thought & deed. Gloucester have some of the same qualities & we are missing crucial players. It’s important that we find a way of gaining a win but as said it will be quite a challenge.
Wouldn’t disagree with any of that, BH. The first half against Bristol reminded me of the old Two Ronnies “Mastermind” sketch where the contestant answered the previous question! We seemed to still be answering the questions posed by Tigers rather than adapting to Bristol and imposing our game plan. With players like Santi Carreras back for Glos we really need to have learned that lesson.
Spare a thought for Ewan Richards, don't think anyone would suggest he's above Roux, Ewels and Maloney in the second row pecking order, but seeing Hill get the nod ahead of him (as good as he is) seems like quite a worrying sign for his Bath future.
Perhaps he's being viewed purely as a 6 now (admittedly on the website he's listed as a backrower), but that's such a competitive position for us, it would take some herculean training sessions or 3-4 front line flankers to get injured for him to get much gametime there.
Just looking back at the stats, in the 21/22 season he made 18 Bath appearances, but then in the 2 subsequent seasons combined he's only managed 11.
Still only 22, and not sure how long he's got left on his contract, but in a squad that now only has 3 seasoned, specialist locks it feels like he should be next cab off the rank at this point.
I would imagine that JvG will be sending the long arms of recruitment out to source another big enforcer type 2nd row to rotate with Roux and compliment Ewels and Molony unless Cuckson is going to be fit soon.
As for tomorrow - it is more about a reaction from the squad we have not really hit our straps yet truth be told - the score in the first match suggests we were brilliant but we were not - the next two games showed just how inaccurate we are at present and last week more concerning for me was the defence, just how easily Bears opened us up.
Tomorrow we are up against another live wire scrum half and a clever 10 so we have to control them and start hitting out targets at pace Gloucester will be seriously up for this and I hope to see some bite and passion from the team.
Let as many of last week's squad as possible atone for their lapses.
Much as I am a great fan of Richards, I am not sure this is the game for him at lock - I would though expect him to be leading the way (from 6) in the Prem Cup in a few weeks time.
Minor peeve- but anyone else find the BBC coverage of league rugby (club, province etc) very odd? Rarely provide previews or team announcements for the English teams. Guess it’s English club footie that dominates but would be nice to be able to read a bit of build up and the teams announced on the site etc, as provided for URC teams.
Will be interesting to see how Hill gets on at lock, from what I can tell it's only his 2nd ever career start there, just hope that the extra grunt work doesn't have a negative impact on his game breaking tackling/carrying ability.

A lot of exciting youngsters in there, will be interested to see how Cuckson gets on, very highly regarded and in a position where we now don't have much depth, an eye catching performance could be rewarded with a few squad appearances this season.
Also nice to see a 10/2 split on the bench (I'm sure Rassie will be taking note), and good that Stewart is back to match fitness, his injury in preseason looked a bit ominous.
More than 25% of the match-day squad are back-rowers! It's going to be fascinating this one .... if the performance/result ends up looking muddled, then there'll be some bicking on ERE come Saturday night.
Lots to like about the teamsheet too
- i'm glad they've trusted Emens
- hoping that Alfie comes out angry with points to prove
- expecting SU to bring his A game after last week's non-event
- wondering if Finn will bring Butt into the game plenty, to ensure his rich vein of form is put to good use
- and while we're not going to start playing 7s, I kind of hope that Spencer will have looked at the way Randall puts pace on everything, and might speed things up a bit this week

Not major- but just bugs me a tad!
England's record breaking test win didn't get on the BBC Sport homepage, let alone the main BBC homepage.
Dan (G)Roan only knows football, and is only interested more generally in sports than give him freebies.

Was concerned before the Bristol game that complacency could be a problem for Bath and this turned out to be the case. Without doubt the worst performance under JvG and a repeat against free flowing Gloucester will result in another defeat.
Really difficult to feel confident about getting the win that is essential for our season.

After seeing a re-run of the match against Bristol I was left feeling that they looked more likely to end up challenging for the Premiership title than us. Whether that was because they stepped up hugely because of the local rivalry, we took them for granted or we just had an off day is not clear but they were better than us for all but the layst20 minutes & during that time we couldn’t unlock their defence anything like sufficiently whilst they cut through ours like a knife through butter. We also have to remember that they lost to Gloucester & they will be just as motivated. Let’s hope that JvG worked his magic during the week!
Adam Leal officiating today - personally been impressed with him in previous games. Ridley doing the big one tomorrow if he officiates like last weekend Mark McCall will be slightly more vocal than JvG.
Please boys put a performance in that takes the officials out of the game. Come on Bath.

I really don't think complacency is anywhere in the JvG coaching philosophy
How can you allege that when you have no idea what the message was to the players, what their mindset was running out of what went on in training the week before?

For myself, I would say "complacent" but I think JvG tries to minimise emotions from these things. IIRC ahead of the Leicester match, Spencer was interviewed saying that most players didn't grow up as Bath fans, and didn't buy into the rivalry with Leicester, hadn't been mentioned in the dressing room etc etc. Looking to be clinical, not emotional.
You wouldn't catch anyone from Bristol or Glos saying that about us..
Against Bristol, it did feel that they wanted it more, we're motivated by something beyond score board and league points.
So not complacency, but also not as motivated as Bristol were, and I could see the same against Gloucester.

Overall a much better performance than last week so far
Still not what we want but only one score in it so everything to play for in second half and hope our bench can be the difference
To be fair I think that defending teams have caught up a bit, and now are much better at ‘turtling’ players over the line. So attacking teams are having to adapt- and we’re not doing it quick enough.

This is true
Wonder if the non call to ship it is lack of confidence in the wingers. Joe C and Muir are very good in tight situations
We do seem to struggle defensively against wide-wide teams. I get that our game is built around a big lack, solid fundamentals, box kick etc but if teams know they can cut us up by being adventurous, that’s quite a weakness, especially as lots of teams, I’d argue including Saracens, now have the ability to play loose. Need to get smarter combatting the chaos-style approach.
dr.bath1865 See. That’s what happens when you pick and go with the big men for a few phases then, bang, you hit Lawrence wide. You score.
Yessssssssssss.
Tell me about it. Give them a few punches to the chops the bam round the side with a hook from the backs.
Felt like our extra stamina and cohesion (inc some Glos injuries) were the reason for the five points today. Really positive to be able to turnaround a sub par first half like that away from home.
Hill, Lawrence and Bayliss the pick of the performances
How Super Ted wasn't MotM is appalling - playing out of position he was a collosus, collecting box kicks, stealing lineouts, making hard yards, hitting monster tackles.
Second half we managed to put Gloucs under pressure when in possession and then dominated the collisions, and capitalised on their errors. Summed up by Zach gifting the TdG try and then throwing his bottle out of the pram.
Hill, absolutely, but Maloney (one restart aside) and TdT were just huge. Really experienced, cool heads. Dunn was everywhere and had his best game in a long while. Lineout 100%? Must’ve been close.
dr.bath1865 So many positives but a lot of them up front.

We trailed Glos for 23 minutes and were never more than 11 points behind. The whinging on this forum uncalled for in my opinion. Yes, we took time to settle and the fast and loose Glos play unsettled us throughout the game. Give credit to Glos for doing that, in the end our superiority shone through. Never in doubt! Didn't go to the game but looked fun on tv.

Agreed. I thought it was a really entertaining game, I’d much rather watch something like that than a really controlled, well defended 9-6.
Great day in the shed. Was worried for the first half hour but second half we looked completely dominant. Haven’t been to Kingsholm for 10 yrs but the welcome in the pubs before and after the game was fantastic.
Just keep improving boys 🇪🇪
Listened to the first half on the radio and was worried for us at h/time as I went for a late lunch. Saw the final result and was v pleasantly surprised. Two away wins and a home loss wasn't what I was expecting from these games after Saints but it'll do nicely. Onwards and upwards Bath ..
Adopted players: 24/25 J Bayliss; [24] O Lawrence; [23] J Cokanasiga; [22] M Green; [21] A Watson; [20] T Faletau; [19] M V Vuuren; [18] T Faletau; [17] D Denton; [16] H. Agulla; [15] L Houston; [14] W Spencer; [13] F. Louw
Last week dented my confidence and I was v worried at ht ( and could have been worse but for the ruled out try which I thought was a bit harsh).
Thankfully the boys responded well, looked much more like they knew what they needed to do 2nd half and were able to impose their power game.
We were helped by glos losing a lot of players before/during game which probably led to their lineout being appalling.
Loads of credit to us though- solved problems and looked utterly dominant.
Officials were good this week, got the big stuff right and allowed a good game to develop.
Du toit is a huge player for us. Hill really was excellent, thought reid and bayliss looked good. Echo the comments on coetzee- absolute handful and the last thing the opposition want to see at 50 mins
Stuart and Maloney left the field after a head clash. We aren't in the position to lose another lock to concussion issues, no matter how well Hill covered yesterday. So speedy recovery and best wishes to them both!

They were both off for blood as opposed to HIA is what I heard on the ref Mike

That was the reason given but I'm prone to being cynical. They clattered heads and were both bleeding. It follows logic to say they may have struggled to pass an HIA.
Which Tyler At least one was both blood and HIA, I thought both.
Trouble was, the commentators wouldn't shut up and let us hear what was being said properly.
Ref was pretty clear just before they restarted that one was blood only and one was blood and HIA, hence both could be replaced.
What a difference having a functional lineout makes!
For a few seasons I thought there wasn't much between Dunn and Annett in terms of darts, but our lineout seems so much more reliable with Dunn nowadays, think there's now a more sizeable gap between first and second choice now.
Hill was a standout across the park, but actually having Bayliss as another lineout option/disruptor gave our pack a different feel.
I wonder whether at some point we might see a backrow combination of Hill at 6, and Bayliss at 7 to give ourselves 4 genuine targets? I do think we've struggled so far this season to dictate the pace of matches, if we were to kick to touch a bit more knowing that we could really disrupt the opposition lineout it could help avoid teams like Bristol and Gloucester (to a lesser extent) ripping through our defence through unstructured phase play.

Imagine we will at some point. So many combinations there that we can really specialise week to week.
Seems like Underhill is due a start next week at Quins and Coetzee deserves a start too based on form this year
Agree Coetzee has been excellent all season, but not many talking about Barbeary yesterday. Watching it live it was obvious that he was instrumental in absolutely sapping the legs of Glos, as it takes so much effort to bring him down even if he wasn’t always making loads of metres each time. Plus he attracts numbers to him creating space elsewhere.

I agree, Barberry was good yesterday.
I wouldn't change him starting and Coetzee coming on for him, likewise with Dunn and Annett - I think some players are better starters than replacements, and other are better as replacements than starters (another example being Ben Spencer who is a better starter than a replacement which is why he hasn't yet shone for England).
Theredseat Coetzee deserves a start too based on form this year
It's an interesting point.
However, with the emphasis on a 23-man game, should the starting 15 be the best players or should it be about the management of when they play during a match?
It's possible that Coetzee's style of play makes him significantly more effective coming on when teams are tiring, rather than him playing 50 minutes wearing a team down.

I think it’s true with some players - Spencer being a good example of someone who’s (relatively speaking) not a good sub - but not sure if it’s the case with Coetzee.
Personally I’d give him and Barbeary a start each in the last two games of this block and think the Quins game suits him better.
Charlieboa1 I love coetzee but perfectly happy to see him coming on at 50 for barbeary (who also had a good game yest)
Like any of the Bath back row options, it's a nice problem to have. Not the same as at half back, where they are exposed / vulnerable to injuries to Finn R and Ben S.
FiveSticks It's possible that Coetzee's style of play makes him significantly more effective coming on when teams are tiring, rather than him playing 50 minutes wearing a team down.
Why can't he tire teams out over the first 50, so that someone else can capitalise in the last 30? I would imagine Barbeary would look pretty good used in that way too. Likewise Bayliss.

Coetzee can’t be happy with constantly being left out of the starting 15 though.
Perhaps he is happy. Possibly him and JvG have had a conversation and agreed that for these games this is how his qualities and skills can be best used
I've not seen anything or heard anything to remotely suggest he's not happy
I'd like to think that nowadays the players are able to mostly put ego/pride when it comes to starting vs coming off the bench.
Jaco's been very effective so far, but I dare say Alfie would have had similar joy if someone else had been running into (and tiring out) the opposition defence in the preceding 50 minutes.
Bath Hammer It’s a squad game which JvG manages perfectly well in my view.
Exactly. JvG seems to have decided one tactic is to have 2 first choice 8s and switch them for the last half hour or so, I guess with a lot of discussion/work with Barbeary and Coetzee as a pair. I think if Coetzee wasn't seen as quite good/effective/right enough to be a starter, he'd be the only back row replacement rather than clearly on the bench in a specialist position; it seems like a similar strategy to front row replacements, particularly the Stuart/TdT pairing last season. Otherwise, why not have a 5:3 bench with Bayliss or Reid in the squad to cover 8 if needs be?

It’s also not his prime role to prioritise keeping players happy though I’ve not seen any evidence that they are not an entirely contented squad.

I'd argue that it is his #1 role as a coach and man manager. It doesn't mean that players are always indulged or accommodated but that the players know the plan and how they fit into it.

Exactly. JvG seems to have decided one tactic is to have 2 first choice 8s and switch them for the last half hour or so, I guess with a lot of discussion/work with Barbeary and Coetzee as a pair. I think if Coetze e wasn't seen as quite good/effective/right enough to be a starter, he'd be the only back row replacement rather than clearly on the bench in a specialist position; it seems like a similar strategy to front row replacements, particularly the Stuart/TdT pairing last season. Otherwise, why not have a 5:3 bench with Bayliss or Reid in the squad to cover 8 if needs be?
It’s also not his prime role to prioritise keeping players happy though I’ve not seen any evidence that they are not an entirely contented squad.

and I’m certain they do.
And that's my point, that it's a clear plan and the players seem to buy into it. It's a bit like having 3 international tight heads, JvG must've given Coetzee and Barbeary clear roles, they know what their job in the team is and they're not looking for another team who will guarantee them starting/80 minutes.
Beyond Coetzee/Barbeary, look at the rotation across the second and back row. Look at the opportunities for Harris, Emens, Sela, TCS (to a lesser extent). We've probably got more injuries in similar positions now than we had since JvG joined, but it doesn't feel like he's regressing to conservative selections, he's rotating and giving people a chance. Obviously 9/10 is a depth concern (possibly hooker as well) but now is the time to really give people a chance. Honestly I wouldn't be shocked to see Lando start at Quins. Maybe he should! And then TCS with Finn the week after.
The Prem isn't won in the first 6 weeks. Test everyone out. Build. Peak at the right time. The Bris performance (and the first half at Glaws) was disappointing, but if we want to win we need to develop and if we want to develop we need to test the whole squad.
You're right, hasta. Those young players coming through feel like it's managed rather than, in the past, when a youngster might get thrown in to plug an injury crisis. I know Harris and Emens have benefitted from a run of back 3 injuries, but they were clearly going to get phased in over this season anyway.
