“Les Corsaires” will come raiding into Bath for the next European Cup round at the Rec on Saturday lunchtime. Nicknamed “The Pirates” for their city’s maritime heritage, there is more than a little swash and buckle about Stade Rochelais, last season’s Heineken and French runner up. They are the brash new buccaneers, driven for success, not just by last year’s double final disappointment, but also a burning desire for the first major trophy and a place among the greats of the French game.
La Rochelle did not have it all their own way in the first round. Visitors Glasgow Warriors dominated possession and territory and led for most of the first half. A late burst saw Les Corsaires take a slender lead into half time and they had to repeat the trick to snatch the lead back 15 minutes later. Strong defence held the visitors out in the last twenty of a tense tussle. A sign of vulnerability, or a battle hardening that will serve them well in later rounds? Those who comfort themselves with the old saw that French sides do not travel well should note La Rochelle’s hard antipodean core: giant Australian lock Skelton, All Black backrower Vito and fellow kiwis at half back- Kerr-Barlow and West. All can be relied on for competitive steel to the end. Their French internationals are tough campaigners too - Bourgarit, Atonio, Alldritt up front, the wily Plisson, dancing Danty and doughty Dulin behind. They pose as daunting a threat as their nickname suggests.
Bath are still seeking their first European win in over two years, so without a win of any kind this season, the omens are not great. This winless run must end sometime though and the home squad is full of quality players. They should be a much tougher prospect at home when all are fit. Fitful flashes of fight have flared in recent fixtures. Last week it was the late defiance of Will Spencer and Richards up front, plus the athleticism of Bayliss throughout. Bailey and Ojomoh are building a nice understanding in attack, while learning harsh and painful defensive lessons on the hoof.
Defence was one of the 3 key reveals in the recent update on the club review. Results and performances since have shown that there are more areas needing urgent attention than a defence coach can solve alone. Hopefully the Griffiths report contained more detailed observations and recommendations. Perhaps some will be announced at this week’s Members Event, which has been postponed by a day (maybe to allow time for confirmation of a new appointment or squad arrival?). If so, Saturday would be a good time for the squad to show their faith in the new direction, as well as defiance in adversity.
Historically Pirates, for all their fearsome reputation, have found their richest pickings against the weak and unprepared, taken by surprise. This week Bath must find the strength and ruthlessness to repel the raid.
Possible Teams:
Bath Rugby: Boyce, Dunn, Stuart, Ewels (Capt.) McNally, Ellis, Underhill, Bayliss. Spencer, Bailey. Muir, Ojomoh, Butt, Rokodoguni. De Glanville. Replacements: Doughty, Cordwell, Rae, W Spencer, De Carpentier. Simpson, Cipriani, Hamer-Webb.
Don't often read your excellent pre-match right through (its all a bit depressing with the current run of match results), but think your last two paragraphs just about sum it up.
Preparation and ruthlessness - what I would call bally backbone mental strength, is a good way of summing it up. Come on Bath Boys, just get out there and strut your stuff. Allez-y.
Considering this is the last in the "30 days" Hooper et al were apparently given to show an uptick in results, does it have the feeling of a last chance saloon? We've P3 L3 (F 55 A108) thus far.
Exeter was ok but we lost. Versus Saints and Leinster we were never going to do anything but lose. The fact we didn't lose in Dublin by as many as we thought isn't a positive.
So if the Griffiths' review is going to be followed, lose this weekend, which we should, although La Roch will be slowed on a heavy Rec, change should be imminent. Why wait to give Gloucester a game on Boxing Day? Let's just get on with it.
Excellent write up once again PG - I just hope we can put a performance in.
What was embarrassing on Saturday was no matter how strong Leinster were a game should not be over within the first 20 minutes of a match - no matter how bad the opposition are.
Watched La Rochelle last weekend and they are definitely beatable. Their power in the scrum is a concern, but I reckon Bath will win by 5 although no TBP.
Now, I'm not one to really get het up about citings, but this is just ridiculous? He put a hand out to stabilise himself while challenging in the air and VDF was underneath. I'm all for improving safety in the game etc but surely that is as pure an accident as you'll ever see?

Just decided to go on Sat and just bought tickets for my daughter and I.
Things not going as any of then want but I support Bath and that should be through both good times and bad.
I don't subscribe to the only way things will change us if we vote with our feet. I am sure all at the club from Bruce down are as desperate (probably more) for an upturn in results and are doing what they think is their best to achieve it.

Are citings ever dismissed? Surely they are only made after a lot of video viewing and re-viewing that should be sufficient for a firm, confident allegation to go to a disciplinary panel?

I have not checked it, but this does not sound deliberate at all. If the contact was unintentional the case will probably get thrown out. He could always appeal if they do find him guilty - he would have a very resonable and logical case.
The fact that it was a complete accident is, I'm afraid, now utterly irrelevant. The overwhelming majority of red cards that we see in the game now are completely accidental. All humans err. We have absolutely reached the point in our sport where you get sent off for being human.
Training postponed following some positives in the Bath camp

“PRL and EPCR have been advised and our game this weekend currently remains unaffected.
Further updates will be made in due course.”
I see that Leinster have had more positive too, following last weeks set. Fingers cross matches will go ahead.

The incident is here at 15.04 on the video clock, 13.39ish on the match clock.
In fairness to the citing commissioner Muir does use VDF to steady himself in his jump as well as coming back down - clearly accidental, but perhaps they might argue you shouldn't be using another player as a stepladder!
TG Kesmo Muir’s eyes are on the ball all the time no way that he intentionally went for the eye area just accidental.
Agreed - however, the law states: "a player must not physically or verbally abuse anyone. Physical abuse includes, but is not limited to...contact with the eye or eye area". Unfortunately says nothing about intention.
It's an 'outcome rather than intent' thing again that may well do for him.
Wondering if La Rochelle will re-assess following latest pronouncement from their government - will they all be expected to isolate on their return? Or will they just squeak it before the restrictions start?
malco Quite honestly the whole competition is now becoming hopelessly tainted by the cancellations taking place.
Just scrap it and start again next season.
BT will not let that happen.
Assuming the game goes ahead I'll be surprised if many La Rochelle fans travel to the Rec.

New rules on French travel: 'From 23:00 GMT Friday, UK travellers will have to have a "compelling reason" for entry to France and show a fresh negative Covid test.' Not sure Rugby is covered under 'compelling'.
If the match is played it should probably be behind closed doors in all fairness (as should all the others). I won't be going to the match...or going out much before Christmas at all to be fair - don't want to kill off Granny over Christmas lunch if possible.

Personally disagree with that, the games are a waste of time without fans and no point watching them on TV. If the situation suggests no fans should be present then the better option is to cancel altogether, although as I said before BT won't permit that to happen.

The level of testing in this country is way beyond the level of testing in France. It's very likely that they have at least as much Omicron infection as we do, and just aren't aware of it.
Bath Blues We might get a share of the points. Result!
irrespective of the discussion as to whether we would/could have won - if points are shared where does the home advantage come. We play them again in January, when (if the game is played) they have home advantage - we will have missed ours. I realise it probably won't make a jot of difference to us but for some teams it could be the difference to progression in the competition or not.
In some ways seems very harsh but I understand the emphasis on the responsibility of a player in Muir's position to avoid eye contact. Provided that is refereed and/or cited consistently then it has to be for the good of the game and all players
Team Up- though not at all sure they will play!

16 Tom Doughty, 17 Arthur Cordwell, 18 Johannes Jonker, 19 Frankie Read, 20 Nahum Merigan, 21 Ollie Fox, 22 Gabriel Hamer-Webb, 23 Tom Prydie

Underhill's absence was poorly explained last week but we've been given the answer. Following the autumn England players have to miss 1 game in the next four. Bath have chosen Leinster for Unders and LaRo for Ewels and Stuart.
We've also had some positive tests which if I were to guess has knocked out Du Toit, McNally, Richards and De Carpentier. This leaves us once again with just the singular recognised lock in the 23. Muir is banned for 4 games so The Carrot slots straight back in.
Joe Simpson has returned to Glaws after his short loan allowing academy graduate Fox to make his first European debut. Also on the bench is two current academy number 8s Read and Merigan. Why we didn't selected Cowan or Graham as recognised flankers I don't know, a clash with their universities perhaps or Read has changed position since the last time the webpage was updated.
I get the impression that the club are worried over the amount of minutes TdG is getting and how @#$%& we'd be if we lost him so new signing Prydie covers him off the bench.
Looking for positives Spencer, Bailey, Mojo and Butt form our core backline and are getting valuable minutes together. 10 graduates from the academy with another 4 yet to sign senior deals. 2 of those foregone conclusions with Bailey and Mojo.
So a new defence coach, a new Head Coach and now a 5 pointer against La Rochelle .....onwards and upwards. (I assume failure to travel is a 5 pointer!).
Given the crazy Leinster decision who were cleared to travel and able to field a full team + bench against a Montpellier team who were also decimated by Covid - The authorities awarded result and 5 points to Montpellier.
Would not be surprised if this is a decision made by FFR that ECR bow to the French money and allow the matches either to be postponed without giving points or order rescheduling.
As expected games to be re-scheduled - hope then Leinster and Montpellier result is reversed otherwise this competition will have lost it's last ounce of respectability.

Postponed rather than awarded to the team that can’t travel or host… Wonder how that will do go with those clubs that have already had their matches cancelled and points awarded?
“ Round 2 matches in the Heineken Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup between French and UK clubs scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday are postponed.”
Disappointing for everyone but especially for the few La Rochelle supporters who will have made the trip over to Bath. At least they have a beautiful city to explore but not quite the same when you have forked out a fair amount of money specifically to watch a match.
Not sure that anyone can be 'blamed' in the present time for decisions taken but it is certainly a bold/radical/right/wrong/knee jerk/over the top/reassuring decision (you choose the adjective) taken by Monsieur le President with regard to travel.
I'll probably appear a bit thick here but if France isn't under lockdown(?) why is travelling here such a big deal? If this variant is as transmissible as they say, it's safe to assume it's as prevalent there as here. Has France introduced similar travel measures against other European countries? Sort of wondering if there's not an element of Macron doing his usual anti-British thing? It will appear less farcical if all European games scheduled for this weekend involving French teams are rescheduled. At the last minute the French prevent the games taking place yet the likes of Leinster and Ospreys are penalised (And certainly in Leinster's case they had a squad of players ready to go who'd been thoroughly tested). Seems a bit ad hoc to me...
On the plus side, I can't remember the last time I had a sporting weekend when neither Norwich City or Bath lost, so I'll console myself with that minor positive.

Quite glad the game's off. That forward pack is frightening.
With Leinster 'losing' 28-0 to Montpellier this years cup could genuinely be decided by Omichron would would be a real shame. Its a pity that they couldn't reschedule all the games, not just some of them.
Bath Supporter Jack Not wishing to hijack a rugby thread but I am sure everyone will excuse me as there is no rugby to discuss..........
On that slide by Mike the Taxi very interesting to see Sweden's numbers..............or indeed lack of numbers
Bath Supporter Jack Oh silly me I thought it was per 100,000 so they could be compared
Actually BSJ, I'm wrong comparing different things, you are referring to deaths, UK and Sweden the same or similar France increasing. But France were very vaccine hesitant at first, 3 jabs is a lot to catch up on!

gaz59 So what happens with the points for these 'postponed' matches
As I understand it, the french clubs are prevented from travelling by government decision so is it two points each club?
Doesn't affect us obviously but it will have a critical impact on some QF qualifiers
No points awarded until the game moves from postponed status to either played or forfeited surely.

It's just wrong that the French teams can get away with postponing the fixtures, they should all be forced to concede the games 28-0 like Leinster and Ospreys.

If it were the other way around with Bath [assuming we were in a competitive position] able to field a team but prevented from travelling I would be very frustrated if all the match points went against us
I don't think Macron cares at all about club rugby. I do think he cares about getting re-elected, is facing a threat from the right and sees no harm whatsoever in kicking perfidious Albion.
Macron might also be listening to scientists a little more than our PM. French cases almost as high as ours and he's decided on a Plan C. I know it might seem fun to blame the French (because they are French) but this isn't a game.

Realistically all you can do in the face of such an easily transmissible virus is delay the inevitable by perhaps a few weeks.
Frances problem is and has always been vaccination levels and hesitancy. Nothing to do with politics Omicron is already in France.

I don't get the travel ban. A French-registered expat mate is coming over for Xmas. British people however are banned- I don't understand why when Covid is rife everywhere unless France is in lockdown and I didn't think it was.

Expats and Brits married to French Nationals are exempt from the new French ban, added to this our rule expects a negative test before they come and isolate until they get their negative result after another test on day 2. Both rules illogical. My son and his family were to come on Thursday and leave on following Tuesday so the day 2 test result wouldn’t arrive until they were back in France!

Hemington you are quite right this is more than just Rugby it is public safety, however Macron quite happy for Castre to travel to Limerick to play Munster and then obviously we have Connacht and Ulster playing British teams - I know Ulster is N Ireland, my point being clearly the IRFU and Irish government do not share Macron's view and clearly Limerick does not carry the same risk as the UK in Macron's view.
My sister lives in France and she reckons outside of Paris Macron is liked about as much as he is in the UK. This action is political games in retaliation to the Migrant issue and other disagreements we have with the French government.

Not sure it has anything to do with Europe’s migrant crisis as they continue to dump the problem on us.
Suggest it’s more to do with fishing licenses and his dislike for everything English.
Hope Leinster are successful with their appeal or at worst get all the French teams penalised in the same manner.

Not knowing what you have seen make a massive difference to what you are referring to? Is it deaths or cases?
As stated elsewhere Macron has made serious errors in relation to vaccines, his political stance on the AZ vaccine cost lives.
If its deaths then here is the data.
If its cases I refer you to my post above. Omicron is about 125 times (estimated) more infectious than the original iteration of the virus!

There is consistency, Macron is consistently racist towards the English and wants to punish us whenever he can.
Really like the look of Josh McKay, Glasgows full back who absolutely flatted Henry Slade running the ball back in the Glasgow v Exeter game. Did La Rochelle underperform last week or were Glasgow just very physical? We will need to be at our best up front for this game I think.

Those 500 years have shown the French are consistent. National interest (real or perceived) comes first and drives their decisions. Ethics, alliances, treaties and agreements only matter if they align with French national imterest at the time.
Macron has been playing games. Less than 40 hours notice to close the border to only the UK. He's lost any votes he had in the alpine ski resorts - places like Val D'isere have 43% of the guests from the UK and 50% of the spend. The 4 busiest & most profitable weeks of the ski season are New Year, the 2 Feb half term weeks and then Xmas.
He's cost the Meribel economy over 5,000 euros from us alone, as a family of 3, by implementing this ban on the Uk, money the locals can't afford to lose after the last 2 winters.
Funny how the UK is the only country he's placed the ban on.

You could substitute the word British in that statement and it would be just as true. Or pretty much any other country in the world for that matter.
I read PGT's post and agreed with it, then read jtf's observation and found myself agreeing with that too! I think the French have a confrontational, anarchistic side. I sort of felt that Britain politically was seen as a bit more level-headed and reliable but not sure if that was ever the case. It's certainly not now of course, and I suppose the nuclear subs contract with the Aussies pretty much emphasises jtf's point that it's all about self-interest. Not sure how you quantify such things, but I wonder if there are any countries that are guided by principles beyond naked self-interest?! (I know it's got nothing to do with the La Rochelle game but as it didn't happen and the thread's sort of drifted in this direction...).
Not a treaty, but the point here is that this ban on British people travelling to France isn't really in their interest-more about petty vanities, which does seem a bit, well, French. Incidentally, there are plenty of people in Britain who see many terms of recent agreements over the 'Green revolution' as wholly against British national interest and I'm sure there must be more examples where countries have recognised the need to 'see the bigger picture'.
... There's a difference between short term and long term national interest. They're still national interest.
We banned travel from South Africa, Nigeria and other countries but not Netherlands. I 100% think there's minimal political downside to Macron kicking the Brits, but less not pretend they're any different to us.
gaz59 I really don't understand the arguments here or the counter-arguments
To me, it is a simple, basic question . Is there a reasonably high risk to the health and welfare of people
If the answer to that question is "Yes" then its a no-brainer, cancel the games. Save peoples' lives
Then when it is much safer to have competitive, face to face to sport and only then restart the competition in the best way possible
Life is far too precious to do anything different
Sod the economics, we will survive that
If Macron banned sport in France even those opposed to lockdown could understand the rationale. He hasn't. He's allowing French people to travel between the two countries. He's allowing French people to move freely and the French govt recently stated they were not looking to go into lockdown. A full programme of sport is taking place in France this weekend. I've yet to find any logic behind this travel ban, so naturally I can't help but feel it's fuelled by the tensions between our idiot leader and their's.
Dorset Boy Macron has been playing games.
Got a trip to Morzine booked 20th Jan hoping it’ll be fine by then.

Agree with this..
OutsideBath does seem to be a little anti-french, or is that just my impression? Personally, I have always found them wonderful people, whose priorities generally align with mine
Happy Christmas everyone, and stay safe if possible.

That's two of us Woody. Got a trip booked for a week or so later. Great place!

I'm sure it will be fine, just don't mention Agincourt, I presume you guys are looking for white stuff?
My interest is the excellent mountain biking in that area, several years ago I tried a bit of their Northsure runs. I'm not up for that now incidentally but it was truly excellent.

Opinion is based on assumptions, whereas fact is based on observation or research.
We cancelled, would otherwise have had to pay the balance of the accommodation and it looks extremely unlikely to be opened up. If anything, suspect it will get worse before it gets better.
The French border won't open before 6th Jan, earliest.
With the change to Swiss entry requirements, we're due to fly to GVA very early tomorrow and onto Zermatt on the train.
After the last few days we won't actually believe it until we're past Swiss passport control!
So those Euros that we were spending in Meribel but now aren't due to the **** Macron, has resulted in the equivalent going to the Swiss instead.

We were in a very nice restaurant in London last week.
Sommelier comes along we choose between a Portuguese wine, as some of you know my son lives there, and a Lebanese wine, not the well known Musar.
The Brazlian Sommelier said you are of course boycotting French wine............I said no (only the champagne as English sparkling is just as good ), she said sales of French wines had declined very considerably as people were choosing to reduce/cut out French product spending!
Me and my family are currently in Tignes, having arrived last Friday. The place has been practically deserted and all the French people I have been speaking to are angry at Macron and scared about their future.
My kids ski instructor had 12 kids cancel for this week, and 90% of their business is English families. The chalet we are staying in is now closing for the next 3 weeks as they only get English guests.
Even the ski shops are deserted.
This is probably the safest place to be with all the fresh air, and you get checked for your COVID pass 3-4 times every day.
Stopping the Brits coming here just doesn't make sense, as you have to prove you have a negative result before you come here.
