Both sides will grapple with identity issues when Bath host Exeter Chiefs at The Rec on Friday night. The Chiefs will be disappointed to have won only half their Premiership fixtures a third of the way through the season. After two defeats in the Premiership Cup they will be desperate to return to winning ways they are used to. At least they have the consolation of standing 4th in the table. Bath, meanwhile, winless and 17 points adrift of their visitors seem to have lost their way. The omens for Friday’s result look extremely gloomy.
Chiefs have stuck to the identity that has served them well for 6 years. This season’s law changes and referee interpretations have blunted the power of that simple keep-ball game plan. While they can no longer rely on their rugged forward drives for the majority of their tries, dominant forward power remains a winner. Their challenge is to adapt their plan to maximise the constant pressure they know they can exert and expand their range of scoring options. With 7 international backs and a raft of promising youngsters a few tweaks to their attacking game should bring more scores, more wins, with identity mostly intact.
Bath by contrast appear still to be in search of an identity. The stated strategy of three seasons ago- build a dominant pack, aggressive defence and winning kicking game, then develop an expansive attack, may not have been abandoned. It has however regressed. Fluent, creative attack is more evident but without a stable platform of possession and let down by a porous defence, is not enough in isolation.
This weekend concludes the “review period” announced by CEO Tarquin McDonald at the end of last month. The Ed Griffiths report, it’s findings and implementations of it’s recommendations cannot come soon enough. Just over a decade ago Ed was the architect of “something special happening at Saracens”. 9 trophies in 13 years resulted from the revival his review initiated. Fans will hope he can have a similar effect at Bath, but after years of “rebuilding” are impatient to see improvement now. Whatever changes arise from his review, surely a clear playing identity must be the foundation for revival?
This match should see the return of internationals and perhaps some of the injured of both clubs. That could mean Hill, Skinner, Tshunzia, Simmonds, Slade and Hogg for Exeter. For Bath Stuart, Ewels, Underhill, Bayliss could make welcome returns. The injury list remains long though and there will be anxious waits for news on Boyce, Coetzee, Ben Spencer and De Glanville.
Bath stand 0-0-7 in Premiership results. If they are to win this Friday they may need a miraculous 007 style intervention to save their world from implosion. Who will be the hero of the hour? Let us hope he has the ruthlessness of Daniel Craig and the insouciance of Sean Connery. Bath will certainly need the resourcefulness, resilience and, above all luck of the famed secret agent.
Possible Teams:
Bath Rugby: Schoeman, Du Toit, Stuart, McNally (Capt.), Ewels, Ellis, Underhill, Bayliss. Fox, Bailey. Muir, Ojomoh, Clark, McConnochie. De Glanville. Replacements:, Boyce, Dunn, Rae, W Spencer, Reid. Green, Cipriani, Joseph.
Exeter Chiefs: Hepburn, Yeandle (Capt), Williams, Hill, Tshiunza, Kirsten, Armand, S Simmonds. Maunder, J Simmonds. Nowell, Devoto, Slade, O’Flaherty. Hogg.
Replacements: Moon, Innard,Keast, S Skinner, Capstick. Hidalgo-Clyne, Walsh,Whitton.
You would hope that the likes of Stuart, Ewels, Underhill and Bayliss could spread some of the international culture and philosophy that brought success at the weekend.
Malco stating elsewhere that they have all been of to the beach, no details but the above certainly haven't.
I'd say if we do take a pounding that won't be the reason, I don't see a win but isn't there a point when professional pride takes over? I see a loss but I don't think there will be a lack of effort and am hoping for a far better performance.

Let's be honest, most of us are fully expecting the Exeter score to be the wrong side of 50 with those two lineups
Even a losing bonus point looks a forlorn, desperate hope
Like sw, I will, at this stage, settle for a much improved overall performance with far fewer avoidable errors, some evidence of high end skill in scoring more than one try and a lot of honest, defensive endeavour and cohesion for the full 80+
In short, something to give the paying fans something to cheer and those of us not at the Rec something of hope to hang onto for the future
You've got them a bit overstocked in the 2nd row and light in the backs PG! Add Hogg and delete Lonsdale? I'd start Reid over Underhill (looked a bit jaded Saturday) and Green over Fox (Fox hasn't done enough for me).
Wonder if Spencer (Ben) might be back? I think I saw him doing the warm up at Welford Road. He’s the one player who ‘could’ take us from zeroes to heroes.
I’m not saying his inclusion will make us world beaters, but we’ve certainly missed his skill, experience and organisational/motivational qualities. With him in the team, likely only a 40 point loss…

An odd point but I wonder what impact (if any) the Chiefs meeting to decide on whether to change their branding will have? I believe it's this week and if they chose to change nothing you get the feeling the papers might give that some coverage. Ofc it could help unite them in an "us against the World" type way but equally being the "villains" can get old pretty quick for the team involved as Saracens know only to well.
I doubt the players care too much. After the NCAI statement this is only going one way. If Exeter choose not to do anything about it (and I suspect they won't) I think the Prem/RFU might.
Underhill should be rested for this one, he has worked v hard in the AI's and we will need him fresh and firing for the HC matches next month. Bath c 4/1, Chiefs are 2/7 for the win. Damage limitation is the priority...

I'd rather target the remote possibility of a win at home to a misfiring Exeter, than the infinitesimal odds of getting anything from Saints/Leinster/La Rochelle.

The game is still 50/50 right up until the first whistle. I would imagine especially given the injuries to our power players such as Beno and Jaco they will be concentrating on a power based destruction of our pack - I am sure they will be picking a very heavy front 5 with Dave Ewers charging down the 9/10 channel.
Let us hope the coaches are prepared for the challenge and in turn the team is prepared.
That is my positive take. I cannot think of anything else like OB stated in another post - I have kind of lost interest now but I will be there shouting and cheering. I just pray it is not embarrassing again for all of us and none of the players suffer any serious injuries.
My hope for the game is that Exeter actually play some rugby, it doesn't rain and Bath lose by less than 20pts. If we actually found a way to win I think I'd need a lie down all weekend and I suspect the club would arrange an open top parade to celebrate given the low bar for success being set right now.

With a decent pack I expect defeat but I also expect a few tries, its not attack we fail at its defence. There are clear signs Williams knows what he is doing and Bailey, Mojo, Muir and TDG are dangerous with the ball, they just don't get enough!

Hopefully it stays dry (will be staying on the sofa in the warm if it looks like it will rain) and I also hope there isn’t too much of that annoying chanting.
A competitive game would be nice, however not expecting too much!
I personally would go for bailey and mojo but could understand taking them out the firing line.
With coetzee out long term could seriously do with faletau back as an option I think. Appreciate he is moving on but I don't think merigan is ready (but would like to see him get a handful more games this season so he is next season)
Sounds like clark and schoeman may be struggling. Cordwell and mojo/jj in I guess with roko in the 23 ...
Good to see that redpath and coko will prob be available early in the new year. Redpath is class and coko was working his way slowly into some decent form.
Clark definitely out for a few weeks so will probably go with mojo . I hope Spencer W has found his stride he was obviously not match sharp last outing…
Gulp - Matthew Carley - Ouch whilst he has improved a hell of a lot he is very officious and technical - if we do not get it right at set piece (which we haven't all season) we are going to be in a lot of trouble - same with the tackle height - Carley is a man who brandishes the red card quickly and decisively.
At the end of the day as with Tempest it is our responsibility to take the officials out of the equation - again something we have failed to do all season.
God I just hope for an improvement and no serious injuries.
That's some very nice clear communication re. injuries. Of course, being a 'fan' I'm going to find a way to complain, and wonder whether they might have sprung Spencer on Exeter as more of a surprise. But actually, it seems like a model piece of clarity, tailored with the reality that injuries don't always behave the way that press officers need them to.
To be fair he's a decent ref now and finally seems to be able to relate to the players. His first few times at the Rec he was awful and not ready to ref at the top level, but now he's one of the better refs in the PL.
I don't really have much view on referees - they all do a decent job in impossible circumstances. But my entirely unresearched, possible unfounded sense is that Carley is one whose default is to favour the team that is higher up the table ..... which doesn't really bode well in this (or any other match).

But my entirely unresearched, possible unfounded sense is that Carley is one whose default is to favour the team that is higher up the table ..... which doesn't really bode well in this (or any other match).
Isn't it more of a case of, like many refs actually, 50/50 decisions seem to go the way of the team that is on top at scrum/breakdown etc and invariably that tends to be the team higher up the table?
Is the injury update the first outcome from the Griffiths report? I know we've done an update like this every now and then in the past, but never with consistency and rarely with the level of detail provided in this one. Wonder if Ed has suggested that, given what we're going through, clearer communication with fans needs to be a priority. If so, I'm a fan, but it might be nothing to do with EG.
The updates are, on the whole, good news and, whilst they're going to rest a few of their internationals, I bet even Underhill will start for us. Having Spencer back is massive. Not that injuries/call ups are an excuse for P7 L7, but we've no excuses given the team we're able to put out tomorrow. I don't expect us to win but I, at least, expect to put up a fight, not be bent in half at every scrum, win our line outs and look like we know what we're doing in the backs. Oh, and if that doesn't work, Spencer can just box kick all night.
I think he has become one of the best referees in Europe. He has his own way, but he makes clear what he wants from the players and is absolutely consistent.
I tend towards malco's view. I reckon he has improved immensely. It is the job of our players to get on top and as pundits have commented "paint the right picture" for the ref
malco If Cipriani doesn't start now, at home, against the best team in the division, refreshed after a week off, what is the point of him being here at all?

If he was commanding attention after consistently turning in brilliant displays of commanding rugby I would agree with you.
He isn't. He is showing himself to be a talented and utterly committed young player who, handled well, can be a great asset in the future.
Quite simply he is the best we have, but it's hard to think of another Premiership team that would be playing him at the moment.
Anyone know who the BT Sport pundits are going to be for tomorrow nights game? I would love it to be someone who has the guts to talk honestly about Bath and the review (is Austin up for it?). Maybe fly in Cheika for 30 mins before the game, or Steve Diamond is in the area?

That is a damning indictment of our situation.
Given what is around him - a beaten back, a rookie 9 who the coaches have only picked under duress/default, and an ever-changing cast outside him, I'd say it's a minor miracle that he's been able to play any rugby at all. I'm not saying that's down to Cipriani's influence, but I disagree that no other Prem team would play him. when you consider his performances in context.
The selection of Bailey isn't in to me a 'damning indictment'. Pretty much everything else about our situation is, however, a damning indictment of our coaching and senior management set-up.

Kay has generally been of the opinion that a defence coach is needed so he may approve. As you say oz would have had the whole lot moved out and replaced.....
Bath Blues We won't win a game this side of Christmas.
Bigger question will we win against Worcester after Christmas! I'm not so sure TBH.
Doesn't matter, we will be into the next 30 day chapter then SW. Like groundhog day (month).
Oh yes, I forgot that bit, do you still remember the previous 30 days then or is it a full reset? If its the later I think I'll leave myself a note, for personal preservation reasons. There is a name for repeated self inflicted pain isn't there?

He's on the bench because he is one of 'the finishers'
They will be an absolute high after their respective successes. And given the level they have been playing at for their countries, Friday evening at the Rec will be a walk in the park for them. They may well run amok.
I think many are giving the club an easy ride, look at the team sheet it is full of good players, yet we are quite happily expecting a 10+ beating and accepting it. The players should be good enough to beat an Exeter side who are not playing well, injuries cannot be used as an excuse, so if we do lose it is down to the poor management/coaching of the club.
I was not going to renew my season ticket until they signed Cipriani, I thought it may be worth just one last chance to see him play, but they are not even doing that - how must he feel? That we go into every home game expecting to get beaten is a novel experience and after an exhaustive investigation the club decides we only need a new defence coach?

Supposed global superstar, saviour of Bath Rugby, being paid a vast salary to play second fiddle to an academy player.
I said 50 - 0 because we will be 14 - 0 down and will kick for the corner, instead of taking the easy 3 points on offer and will throw in not straight, knock on, or just simply lose the line out.........
Compared to what Slade and Hogg have been used to for the past three weeks this will be a slow motion walk in the park.
As Opti says "on paper"...........
Had lunch today with a Leicester supporter (he paid!). He said he feels our pain as they have of course come bottom for the last two years.
In my game the easiest way to win awards is to have a really rubbish year the year before..........I wonder if this is all part of a clever ruse...........and we win the league next year.
Perhaps I’m naïve, but I thought we were reasonably competitive in our last prem game away to a team in better form than Exeter, with fewer of our 1st choice players available than we have now.
(I appreciate that we got humped in the cup in the meantime but that might as well have been the a-league, as far as I’m concerned.)
I’m travelling in hope that we build on that performance.
Steady on with that positivity Barnold, won't land well round these parts.
I am 95% in the ' we will get utterly pumped ' camp and 5% in the ' we weren't awful last league game and Exeter aren't in great nick so maybe we can run them close ' camp....

Cos we're a guaranteed 5 points if they do and they have to keep pace with all the other teams that do it.
Hello. I can’t make tonight’s game (for Covid avoidance reasons, not because of how we are playing) and I am letting a workmate have my Season Ticket for tonight only. Is there a one game digital pass I can hand over or do I just pass on my overall ST QR code? Sorry, normally I’m the one offering the tech advice - I think I’ve hit the age where it’s all downhill and large button phones from here on in.
As expected (Baxter is no fool) that is a big pack and with the likes of Williams , Moon and Armand on the bench I think we know where this is going especially with the crash merchant that is Whitten in the centres (he is a better player than just a crash merchant - but he is a power player) to bring the ball back against the grain and into the backrow.
Like to know the odds on Simmonds, Kirsten and Ewers each scoring tonight - weather prediction appears to suit a heavy Exeter pack and with that backrow Orlando Bailey better have extra shoulder protection in place because they will be coming down his channel and Sam Underhill cannot tackle all 3 at the same time.
Williams v cordwell off the bench isn't a great match up.
If we are out of the game with 20 to go I hope they have him those minutes. One of many who has barely played any rugby matches over the last 18m so can't expect him to improve without getting a chance.
Just so much negativity on this board at the moment! I think the term 'supporter' is totally misplaced with some of the posts , and some posters seem to appear on a more than regular basis spouting nothing but constant criticism about every aspect of the club and its playing staff. I thought that the moderators had banned the main culprit, but it seems there are others who are in waiting to take over the hollow title of 'Mr. Negative'.
I am as disappointed as most on here about our results this season and of course we should be looking to find ways to improve, but not everything about the club is rotten from the top down as some would have us believe.
We are clearly lacking in confidence and tactical areas of our game need to be improved and developed. The club has started that process.
If I was a player preparing for tonights game, I sincerely hope that he doesn't glance at this board to see what so called supporters are saying, it is hardly motivational in any sense of the word, in fact it is a thoroughly depressing read in many aspects.
It is very easy to be a supporter when things are going well but it is testing when we are going through such a bad patch.
Will I watch tonight expecting a home win, I don't think so. Will I watch tonight expecting an improved performance, lots of effort for the cause....absolutely 100%. Win or lose, I am fully expecting the harbingers of doom to be back on the board tomorrow finding something to moan about but not in a constructive way. Such is life!!!

The posters on this board, many of whom have supported this team for (many) decades have seen 1 win in 15 Premiership games and right royal stuffings in many of them. Most, if not all, care very deeply for the club. Watching it driven to the (record breaking) lows of this season is bound to illicit a lot of negativity, some would say realism. What a ridiculous post to suggest that they aren't supporters because they are upset about the club consistently losing badly...

If you read this board regularly you will know the BathMatt53 is a regular supporter of the Bath rugby, not prone to negativity in any way unlike others who I agree are overly pessimistic and critical.
Those people get challenged regularly and get a gentle spanking when they get rude.
The point being made is that with the club at its lowest ebb in terms of position and morale for years. (You can probably tell us the last time that was given your longevity) criticism of the club is no longer just negative opinion it is simply a statement of fact.

Well I am giving the Rec a miss tonight, for the first time in ages. There are a few reasons but the team performance to date is a factor. Apart from that the weather, parking, Christmas crowds and my family from London visiting are the major factors.
Yes even optimists like me are frustrated and cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel yet but hopefully the team will give something to smile about in front of the telly and a roaring fire!

Gonna consign the last three criticisms against Carley to the draft bin because I just sound bitter and one eyed. But wow, great scrum. Everyone fired up. Dunny on song. I love to see it.
Ultimately we lost that game when we ran out of loosehead props. Will Vaughan at this stage of his career simply can not be expected to hold up the Exeter scrum five yards from his own line. The scrum went backwards, Ellis had to stay down to give Vaughan everything he'd got and Cipriani at guard somehow couldn't even get a hand on Simmonds running down the 10 channel. Bloody depressing really. Reid was excellent, typical that he joined the injury list. Hooper looked like he was trying not to cry at the end.

A much better performance in terms of committment and defence, but as ever big decisions go against the side a the bottom:
Hogg -deffo yellow for the deliberate trip (and he has a lot of form for that) and got away with a deliberate knock on when Ojo should have pinned his ears back.
Penultimate scrum - that wasn't a penalty, it was just a great scrum from Exe that folded us in two.
Few other dodgy scrum penalties, but then refs do guess.
Confidence (or lack of it) is such a big factor in elite sport, and the difference between winning and coming second.
Fundamentally we failed to take the chances we had, and Exe's forward's replacement were stronger.
How many thought we'd get a losing BP tonight and only concede 2 tries?
Sadly, was only going to end one way. Heroic and desparate defence only gets you so far...our half back replacements, particularly Simpson, were awful.
Bath gave 110% effort tonight but it's bare bones obvious that this coaching set up and personnel won't turn it around. Interesting to see Conor o'Shea as a guest on BT.
malco Ultimately we lost that game when we ran out of loosehead props.
Summed it up for me
Gutted for the players and the coaches. That was an epic performance. Way above what I was expecting right up to the 75th minute but there was so much inevitability about the next 5
Had we been mid table then a LBP in that game context would have been a reasonably good indicator that we could be vying for top 4 come the run in
But we're not and it so painfully just shows how far off we actually are from where we want to be
A new defence coach and some extra hours for the psycho and physio team won't change that one bit
Exeter bench was always likely to be a big factor and so it proved. Fair comment re lack of ball carriers but we blew 2 good try-scoring opportunities and that lack of confidence /self-belief did mean there was a sense of inevitability about the defeat. People I stand with on the terrace were pretty positive about the performance, as was I. Some very committed defence which is something. Underhill was my pick but lots of decent performances. I don't think we're anything like as bad as some posters on here think but each to their own. When you're in a rut it's hard to break out of it and we won't win our next 2 games, but there are some winnable home games coming up so I won't despair just yet.
Hooper it's time to be a man and stand down. It's a too big a job for you, no shame in admitting that. Not sure who can replace him but this is embarrassing now.
Not a big fan of finding positives in defeat, but there were some tonight.
Thought the players were excellent and clearly gave everything so well done to them. The team almost looked coherent at times.
The Rec actually had some atmosphere and for the first time this season we had things to cheer and get excited about.
It didn’t rain and it wasn’t that cold.
Only negative was small sections of Exeter fans showing their ignorance by wailing which I thought was going to be stopped. Clearly some of them aren’t too bright.
Already knowing the result & that it was a surprisingly close game I settled down to watch it & did see some good endeavour but I knew it was going to end in yet another defeat & couldn’t drum up any enthusiasm. We are expected to be satisfied because we weren’t as bad as we expected, in fact quite a lot better but Exeter are not what they were, let’s be honest, & playing as we did I doubt there are many, if any, teams we would have beaten. Had there been a massive reset following the review I might have experienced some optimism but the likelihood of scraping along the bottom has little appeal.
Well done Bath. The better team performance over 80 for me and lots of positive signs especially the commitment and team-work in defence. Feel for Ojomo who had a great game but could have walked his try in. Spencer back makes a huge difference for me and Bailey looked excellent all game including composed kicking from out wide. Great to see glimpses of the old Roko too.
The big take-away for me is a reminder of the quality that you have in that Bath team and so much of it younger players.
Maybe more coaches will help but it still concerns me that the coaching misses the obvious or is so rigid in thought that it can't contemplate different ways.
Take Cipriani - we all know what his defence is like. He doesn't need to defend the 10 channel at a scrum. The result probably would have been the same but it's that it doesn't seem to register.
Same with the seeming unawareness at certain kickoffs....
Just watched the game. We did not play badly for large chunks of the game and showed a vast improvement in energy but we showed no improvement whatsoever in any kind of rugby intelligence. Four points down, last play of the game and we try a speculative offload out of the tackle instead of just recycling the ball. I became very, very vocal at that point - Alexa (the USA version) is learning a lot of British swear words this season. I hope Miles Reid is OK but it did not look good and it was very noticeable how our forward energy levels dropped when he went off.
Austin's deconstruction of our defensive structure was both illuminating and depressing and Lol's antipathy to anything Bath continues to grate.
Carley fine, Exeter bang average and we still lost.
My MotM - OB2. A shining light on a dark night. I hope we can keep him but I'm not holding my breath. Fingers crossed his shoulder is OK.
It really is not beyond the bounds of possibility that we will not win a game this season.
... IMHO, of course.

Exeter misfired but in fairness we made them misfire through the intensity of our defence. Hooper’s face at the end said it all though - that was the nearest thing we have to a winnable game in the 30-day grace period and we lost. Just don’t know where a win is coming from now. We won’t field a stronger starting XV than that.
My normal llst of infuriatingly stupid things we did was much shorter than it has been.
Cips kicking the ball away to give them 10 yds
Not bringing on spencer (for ewels) with vaughan to give our 5th choice a fighting chance at scrum time
Mojo giving up a soft pen through laziness
Simpson being a negative impact sub- what on earth must fox and green think
Frustrating as felt before game and certainly during game that we were catching Exeter at a good time- they look at a bit of a low ebb. Never an easy task to turn over a team with that quality and experience but certainly a missed opp.
I agree that we lack a bit of composure, lack ball carriers, and we're outgunned from the bench which tbf is partially due to availability stil being v poor.
Having listed negatives about I certainly felt there were some positives.
Whether you want hoops/hats out or not that kind of performance and attitude from the players suggest they haven't lost the dressing room
We must keep this level of focus on set piece and defence- they are the fundamentals that give you a chance in games and we're much better. Keep prioritising them in training.
Bailey is starting to look class- that was a beautifully balanced performance. Lots of solid basics plus a few lovely touches like quick drop out and dinks over the top. Goalkicking looked v solid.
Spencer is absolutely excellent- pleasure to see hik back. need to sort out the options behind him as drop off is insane
Dunn looked far more at it to me
I will undoubtedly be called naive but I don't feel like our position can't be turned around by getting a bloody good extra coach in and getting recruitment spot on in the summer. Neither of those things will be easy though and let's face it the pressure on hoops/hats isn't going away as don't see us winning a game til christmas/new year period at best. If they go then fine by me.
I just feel like the review has happened, decisions have been made.....don't really see the fun in continually seeing everything through a glass half empty lens. I am philosophical about rugby these days- had an amazing 15 yrs and then a mediocre 20 years, it is there to be enjoyed rather than to make you miserable. I certainly enjoyed elements of last night and the atmosphere looked good.
Our main ball carriers are Faletau, Coetzee and Obano.
Having all three injured gives us a real problem.
Dunn and Stuart should be part of that group and have always been effective carriers in the past but for some reason this seems to have almost completely disappeared from their game this season.
Underhill seems to carry more for England than he does for Bath, but most of his carrying seems to be done from running lines at pace rather than making hard yards from the breakdown.
I think carrying is something Ellis should be focusing on with coaches. If he was able to add it more to his game he would become a really serious proposition at 6.

Agree malco. Missing a key combo of players there.
I think underhill defo has the ability to make hard yds if we wanted to use him that way- currently head and shoulders above many players but big ask for him to do everything.
Ellis should be able to carry in heavy traffic- big guy, pretty athletic but tends not to do the role. Lawes is a good example of someone who has added that to their game over time.
I think coetzee is 100% the man they identified to fill that role but awful luck so far.
Thought slight return to form for dunn last night. Stuart has all the attributes to be a v effective carrier- if he has any designs on getting ahead of sinckler he needs to improve there.

For the first time this season the game was almost enjoyable and the stadium was alive. As ever the players gave their all and looked knackered at the end, possibly deserved more but once Exeter got scrum dominance the result was inevitable.
On the big screen it certainly looked like Hogg deliberately changed direction to trip TDG in the first half, did the TMO review the incident?

He knew what he was doing but just about subtle enough to get away with it. Commentators felt he was lucky.
Glad you took some pleasure from the game, I did as well despite the disappointment

Despite my critical posts about the coaching setup when I get to the Rec I do everything I can to enjoy the game and support the players. The fact I've got no voice this morning suggests I had a pretty good time.
Long drive home last night gave me time to think about the match. Obviously plenty of effort from the players, good defence, but given the number of good players in the team and against an Exeter team who seemed out of sorts and lacking confidence we should have done much better.
The outcome of them long awaited report was that we needed a new defence coach, most would agree with that, but last night there seemed to be no cohesion, no thought out plan, just 15 players giving their all but effectively in attack playing like individuals and not a team. Missing some one running straight and hard at the defence, a couple of good chips from OB but we never really looked like scoring the later stages.
This is more than just the need for a new defence coach, it needs a completely new strategy for us to be able to put the opposition under pressure. As for most of the recent past we still have a soft underbelly.
I don't see anything changing with this current coaching staff in place, I used to enjoy watching Bath play but now I just come away feeling frustrated and fed up and I am sure the players must feel short changed by the club, it is their living, their careers are short and some of them must be looking elsewhere if nothing changes.

Nothing wrong with constructive criticism and as you say need to try and take some pleasure from some games otherwise what's the point
joethefanatic Lol's antipathy to anything Bath continues to grate.[/quote
I didn't see the post match analysis, but I was actually surprised by the lack of anti-Bath sentiment from Lol during the match. There were definitely at least 3 occasions he praised us or said we'd been unlucky with the ref. For him, that's a glowing review.
I was staggered by lol occasionally not favouring the opposition. No idea what bath did to him but it clearly still burns.... must really dislike Exeter!
OK there were some dim, avoidable penalties and Exeter were some way from their destructive best but overall it was a far better, stronger more cohesive performance.
So what was the difference from recent embarrassing efforts? The Spencer effect?
I have finally watched the game. Firstly well done boys those players played themselves into the ground for that shirt and deserve all the plaudits they got - didn't think Carley was an issue in the result TBH.
The problem is we lost the match haven given that amount of effort and commitment which is unsustainable and still we lost against a good team. I don't buy into the Chiefs weren't playing well it was more a case we did not allow then to play.
It was a shame that Chiefs bench as expected was too strong for us.
I will be honest even if we had won that game and probably we did enough to do so it does not for me change the fact at times we looked like Rabbits in headlights no cohesion or collective drive, think it was mentioned a few times on commentary we need direction.
I did note on Hoopers post match interview his left ear was bright red on fire - someone talking about him behind his back?
My honest conclusion the players were excellent last night but it highlighted how much a need a change in the coaching team and direction ASAP and my opinion on that subject has not diminished one bit - that was a game we definately should have won and the players effort deserved.

I watched on TV but it was nice to emit a good helping of ‘yesssss’ and ‘get in’ and and a lot of clench-fist muttering of ‘c’mon, c’mon, c’mon’ rather than this season’s standard response of weary, resigned ‘oh ffs’. Feeling ‘involved’ is a pretty basic return on (emotional) investment though.
I made it to the game. There are lots of comments on here about Exeter being mediocre. Hmm I think Bath found their defensive intensity and made them look a little average in attack.
Added to that I think that Exe are struggling to come to terms with no pre -latching of the entire pack and better insistence that they stay on their feet at rucks and hitting rucks at speed is a card waiting to happen. If only the refs would penalise coming in at the side of rucks that would get their forwards almost legal.
Spencer B. Seemed to be the factor that got Bath moving hopefully he can stay fit. I wasn’t convinced with the Cipriani signing, my commitment at the time was …meh. I have seen nothing to change that. Bailey head and shoulders above him on current performance level.
I do wish we would not give all these penalties away for holding on. Surely it has to be better to let them have the ball than let them kick and then win the lineout 40 - 50 yards further down the field.
I don't know the penalty count but guess it was 15 of which I suspect 6 - 7 were for holding as Dallaglio said more than 10 you probably lose the match, something I understand Clive Woodward also said.
Bath Supporter Jack I don't know the penalty count but guess it was 15 of which I suspect 6 - 7 were for holding as Dallaglio said more than 10 you probably lose the match, something I understand Clive Woodward also said.

Bath 17 penalties (of which Max O had 3), Exeter 8 pens.
Possession and territory fairly even. Bath had a better tackle %. Underhill made 17 tackles and missed 1.
Thats a risk with young players like Mojo and Orlando, 3 penalties isn't brilliant but its only a problem if he doesn't learn from it. Mojo from all accounts is very attentive to details so I don't see it as a problem.
Malco pointed out that SU plays a different role when he plays for England, (as a ball carrier). I agree with that you don't go from made 2 missed 2, to made 17 missed 1 in a week.

Opinion is based on assumptions, whereas fact is based on observation or research.
What makes you think the Bath players didn't know it was coming?
There's a huge, huge difference between knowing that something is coming, and being able to do anything about it.
Is there any back in world rugby who you'd put money on to prevent Sam Underhill coming at pace off a stable/advancing platform?
I think they 100% knew it was coming. They cop a lot of criticism but ellis had to stay down to help our 5th choice loosehead try and hold an England International tighthead. I don't think any 10 would back themselves to stop simmonds from 5 yds out.
Yeah Mojo had a poor game by his standards and, tbh probably cost us the result. I'm inclined to be more charitable to him than others. It's a learning point.
I remember about a decade ago Hooper played out of position at 6 against Glaws and had a shocker. I think after that he barely made another mistake the whole season. Good example to learn from.
The Simmonds try was not caused by the defence in that phase, it was the failure, twice, to clear our lines properly when we had the opportunity.

It was primarily caused by being mangled in the previous scrum.
Parsons Choice really..............stay locked down trying to stop the scrum moving towards the line knowing that Simmonds would pick up and the only hope was he would drop it, we would pick up and clear to touch, (a scrum to us would only have had the same consequence - see technical point thread) OR don't commit to the scrum see it moving forward at pace and see Simmonds score a pushover try.
As some on posted above don't get into that situation in the first place!
P G Tips For what it's worth, I thought Carley reffed the game well.
He did err though on the Hogg/De Glanville incident - definite push and should have been a penalty.
PG
Completely agree on Carley's reffing overall [for what little I know about it!] but if it was a penalty then surely it had to be a yellow card given the position and situation?
Carley didn't get many big decisions clearly wrong but lots of little penalties went against us and not Exeter. Yet another problem with being seen as a losing team.
We experienced way worse than Carley who has improved dramatically. My main beef with all refs is not policing the offside line (which closes down all the space to actually play rugby instead of just collisions) and as seen repeatedly Friday night ignoring in at the side of rucks. This enables more to be illegally added to the ruck and slows down the oppo’s ball.
There is no need to change the laws just implement them
Never In Doubt Yet another problem with being seen as a losing team.
I don't buy that referees are biased against certain teams but agree that favouring a dominant/"better" team is a pretty well know thing. I thought Carley had a good game and even the Hogg incident I think he actually referred it and the TMO said nothing to see so it wasn't really his poor call.

Not sure that NID meant a specific team, more as you described the dominant team at that phase of the game OM.
The double penalty ruling penalty plus card, is too severe for some of the infringements.
My personal feeling is that reds are too frequently used, an (technical) early red actually ruins the game often being a deciding factor, as a spectator I lose interest. I'd like to see a double yellow, 20 mins, and an introduction of an orange card to indicate that.
Tyler Offiah
Opinion is based on assumptions, whereas fact is based on observation or research.
Current ref practise does seem to benefit the (perceived) dominant team.
Examples - team A throws crooked into lineout, forcing opponents to jump across if they are to compete. Team B penalised. Team A kicks 40M downfield and repeats the process (this was picked up by Ben Kay in Quins v L Irish match on saturday). Team A gains reward (indeed double reward) for infringing while Team B is denied a principle of the game (Fair & open competition for the ball.)
Similar has happened frequently this season at the scrum- the side who wheeled the scrum (now no longer permitted and a penalisable offence) are actually awarded the penalty.
Absolutely not saying that refs are biased against specific teams just that underdogs are seen as more likely to infringe as they are the weaker team and may also be more likely to stretch the rules.
At the moment that is definitely us. Had we been higher up the table and viewed as equal to Exeter then I don't think the penalty count would have been 17-8 against us.

It is very much a sub-conscious issue.
My perception is the penalty count was largely against us because our scrum was destroyed in the second half leading to a penalty for every scrum
I agree in the last 20 minutes but the only penalty given away by our replacements was 1 by Ellis. We lost because we don't have the depth in our pack and if we fix that the 50/50 penalties should go our way.

Exeter seem to really push the boundaries at the ruck by having the tackler contest and try to disrupt the ruck so long as they fall on the right side. Once they get the attackers off balance other guys join in. I don't know how they get away with it.
A real shame for him hasta and with that and the try he tried to pass that he could have run in that's quite a swing in points. Tbf he had a very strong game otherwise and looks a cracking young player.

What really annoyed me about the 10 yds for Cips kicking the ball away, was that Exeter had been doing the whole match with nothing done about it. Even their No. 4 did it straight after half time, and yet nothing. But as soon as Exeter flap their arms and complain, we get marched back 10.
Either penalise teams for it every time, or not at all, but be consistent!

I'm sure he will look at that try blown and realise either his pass was a fraction too late or, far better, a quick show and go and it was an easy walk in. But so easy to shout out from the comfort of my sofa

Yeah I would have expected hogg to go for the tackle on mojo rather than gamble on an intercept so not surprised he felt the offload was the best option.
Not sure he did too much wrong in the moment without the benefit of hindsight as you say.
Made a couple of errors but as a 21 yr old playing in a losing team every week his performances are standing up well.
