Bath will encounter a familiar old beast armed with new claws when they visit Leicester on Saturday. Despite faring the better of the two fallen giants in recent years they can no longer count on Tigers under new head Coach Steve Borthwick floundering as they did last season. In addition, referees are encouraged to pounce ruthlessly on breakdown offences, so there are several new challenges to adjust to. One old certainty will remain though: the tie is bound to be contested tooth and claw.
The great rivalry of two and three decades ago no longer decides the Premiership title, but still carries huge significance for both clubs. This is a game full of sub plots. Each team is coached by a graduate of Eddie Jones’ World Cup coaching team, who will know each other’s strengths and weaknesses inside out. Tigers are piloted by George Ford, once a crowd favourite at the Rec, while Bath welcome back Will Spencer from his Midlands exile. Meanwhile, with a heavy Autumn International schedule looming and player welfare an issue that will not go away, there are opportunities for players on both teams to impress Jones and force their way into the England squad. Last week Bath enjoyed a comfortable, but restrained bonus points win over London Irish, while Tigers showed considerable steel and defiance in defeat at Sandy Park. Who then will take the morale boosting win?
Some of the hosts’ big beasts will be well known, particularly up front where Genge, Youngs and Cole should form a potent front row. At Exeter they were pushed on by Lavanini and Green, while Harry Wells joined Reffell and Taufua in the back row. Borthwick may want to build on the stability of this line-up although he may consider tweaking the loose forwards to start either Wallace or Liebenberg. England half backs Youngs and Ford will be a constant threat, hoping to release Olowofela and Worth in the wide channels. It would seem a gamble though for Borthwick to start new signing Nandolo as his latest interview suggests the star signing is not yet ready. Matt Scott showed last week that he could provide Leicester’s midfield thrust and stability -or will Harry Potter get a chance to try out some magic? Whatever the team sheet there will be interest in the impact -or lack of it- of the Welford Road factor. How will a newly constructed squad gel and perform without the frenzied fervour of the faithful?
Bath’s tight five dominance over Irish suggests they are well equipped for the forward battle, though they cannot expect the heavy supremacy they enjoyed for periods in that match – especially at the lineout, Borthwick’s key area of expertise. To win away in this tigers’ den they will need their back row to be at their best, suggesting a place in the 23 for the physical attributes of Tom Ellis. It is behind the scrum though where the biggest improvement will be needed: if the forward battle is close, a little midfield magic or counter attacking adventure from the back three could prove the match winner. While Bath’s midfield was mostly muted against Irish, there was promising sharpness from McConnochie and Watson while Rokodoguni has clearly rediscovered his zip and appetite. The key man once again though could be Ben Spencer, not just for his box kicking and speed of pass. Some of Bath’s most threatening moments came when he and McConnochie attacked the blindside. If Bath are to win away at Welford for the 4th time running, I expect more of the same will be needed.
Borthwick is realistic in stating that Leicester have ground to make up and emphasising that first and foremost he is looking for effort from his players. He will have them metaphorically fed on red meat this week. Stuart Hooper is also likely to want his forwards mean and backs hungry. The result may therefore come down to which team proves the more predatory on the day. Against Leicester’s perceived home advantage, Bath can claim the motivation of superior league position and recent results. Dunn, Ewels and Mercer, all rivals to Spencer for last week’s Man of the Match, all have a chance to press their England credentials. Rokodoguni and McConnochie will also want to remind Eddie what they can do. Tigers may have renewed and sharpened their claws, but Bath can win this. To do so they must summon up roar, bite and ferocity of their own.

If the two teams were to swap fly-halfs, I would put my house on us winning with a bonus point. As it is, our sole area of outright supremacy over LI - the lineout+maul - comes up against the country's best lineout strategist.

Can the match proceed if there is a lockdown in Leicester on 22nd? Or would it be played elsewhere? As they can actually field a team I assume that the 20-0 wouldn't apply?

I would pick our two ex Tigers, Spencer for McNally & Williams for Ellis, in the starting pack, they shouldn't be short on motivation for this one. I would give McNally a rest, Stooke in the replacements and put Ellis on the bench instead of Mercer. I would like to see our big forwards running at GF early in the game to ruffle his feathers and hopefully knock him out of his stride. The big question is what happens at 10 if RP has a stinker or gets injured? Genuine question, has Ben Spencer ever played 10?

I was about to write that their options at 10 are much like ours, but on closer inspection they actually have a fairly perfect 'stable' there: Zack Henry, Tom Hardwick (21-year old, lots of England U20 caps) and Jonny McPhillips (20+ appearances for Ulster) as back-up.

Put Ellis on the bench instead of Bayliss. Keep Mercer in starting XV - he was good against LI. Start Stooke. If we can win the front-row battle, then I'd rather stick with a mobile back 5 to capitalise on that.

Is there any actual ruling in place on this? I haven't seen any announcement from PRL, only the beeb article, which seemed speculative.

I think we are in for some surprises from both given the rotation required. Second guessing what they each have in mind for later fixtures, especially for players expected to play in the internationals, won't be easy.

Strictly speaking no TitB but its’ predecessor, the league, began in 1988. Bath & Leicester were leading lights in the late 80s/early 90s.

Thanks PGT. I always find it interesting that Bath fans see Tigers as bigger historical rivals than the other way round. Tigers focus is definitely on Saints
In a derby sense it would obviously be Glos, but during our glory years they were seldom a rival for honours.

I see mike ford has wangled himself a role as defence coach this season. a promotion from last year. ford snr is following his tried and trusted process of first getting a foot in the door, then bumping those off in front of him one by one until he ends up in the top job. son George is of course collateral for all of this, and given George is pretty much holding tigers together at this point I can see ford snr making his move on borthwick's job sooner rather than later. poor old Steve. he deserves better.

Thanks PG Tips, nice to read about rugby again. Bath were the top rival for a long time before Saints, then it was Wasps, but for fervour it is now Saints. Let's hope for a good game.
This game is full of intrigue, plenty of tasty match ups and there is definitely some history here too. No idea on the outcome, might know more when we see the team sheets, but I was sort of pleased with the teams attitude at Sandy Park, the side looked more like a team than anything we fielded last year. We tried a group of talented individuals and it didn't work, now we are reverting back to our old strengths, Tigers fielded 10 players in last weeks squad that were home grown ex academy players, I hope see more of the hunger and bite we saw this coming weekend and hopefully a lot less penalties.

He's a very good 'away' 10. Which may explain why our game plan is to play like an 'away' team whether we are at Sandy Park, or at the Rec vs a team we actually managed to beat by 30+ points away from home.

Not sure they need to - can still put out a strong side on Weds if needs be IMO, especially if a few of the subs come on fairly early.
I remember a Bath vs Tigers little cup game not too long ago when it was basically their u18s against a very strong side and it was pretty close - I'm not counting my chickens those Tigers kids will be super eager to impress. Just hoping that their 14 doesn't shout 'expelliarmus' too many times when we have the ball.
(edit - I just looked up some of their team, man alive some of them are young. Their no 6 is only just 19, big lad that he is).

I'd rather say, 'thanks very much for the 5 points', and sacrifice the Saints game, where we would have been budgeting 1pt maximum in normal circumstances.
If they want to qualify for the big European tournament next year then they need to be top 8. Having gambled and lost last week then looking at their fixtures then that means Irish & Gloucester are must win games.
They play those two straight after us so I guess they are resting this week to go all out for the next 2 weeks.

Tigers aren't bothered where they finish this season. This is like an extended preseason for them. Rebuild from the ground up, and take a shot at the Challenge Cup in a few weeks.

No - but it's quite a good temporary 'player welfare' idea - because there's going to be quite a few of these horrendous mismatches coming up - probably including us away to Saints next week.
I've seen refs finish school games early for that reason usually just before three figures to nil to save humiliation.
Also seen a ref ask games teacher to sub a rather large U14 player at half time who was causing mayhem! Legal but just dangerous.

Last time we played the Tigers 3rds, it didn't go exactly to script. Hopefully Hooper will remind the team of that match and try and avoid any complacency.

Some of the comments on here are a bit overconfident I think...Bath have a stronger side out but nothing is a given. Skybet have put the spread up from a narrow win to 10 points after the teams have been announced but that's no pushover (as I expect a few of the tries will be).

With that Leicester side against our near full strength 23, nothing but a very convincing 5 point win will be acceptable IMV.
C'mon you Bath, you have a real chance to impose yourselves up front and really run them ragged in the backs. No excuses please.

The argument against would be whether to give them all a go at the same time? Seems like a risk to change that many at once IMO, much as I would love to see 3 or 4 of our kids on the pitch.

I think its clear now that Borthwick is treating this as an extended pre season, and so having a look at the whole squad and spreading the game time and injury risk around. Several big signings in the backs aren't at the club yet and Nadolo isn't ready, so have a good long look at the youngsters. No international caps in tigers 9 to 15 - versus how many in the Bath backs and half backs?
It may be a shrewd move by Steve Borthwick. Young guns, not too well known outside Welford Road, with nothing to lose: go give it a lash lads and put pressure on the old guard. They could spring a surprise- we should be ruthless, not complacent.

Personally, I think we will and on the back of that we will get enough penalties to keep the game in their half. Expect Bath’s backs to open up in the last quarter.

Well done Bath, I know you had it sewn up but I was pleased to keep it to that score and to have had some possession and territory and kept going
Great to get the bonus point win and three in a row at their place. I though we saw some of the attacking interplay we have been hoping for. A drop off in the last 30 minutes, but possibly hard for the players to maintain the intensity once the match result was inevitable.

When you don't touch the ball for half an hour against a terrible club's bunch of kids... come on.
It's the usual breakaway tries out of nowhere, then don't touch the ball for ages. Our attempt at attacking rugby in that second half was embarrassing, I've defended Dempsey in the past but that was dire shovelling it on.
Little cameos from just about everyone which is pleasing - let's hope cameos turn into performances as confidence grows.

Really enjoyed our style of play in the first half. Looked sharp with plenty of power right but a real willingness to get the ball to the wide men. The McCon try from line out to finish was a textbook mix of power, offloading, quick ball and pace. Yes, against kids, but you can only beat what’s in front of you.

Well one record didn't get repaired over the break. You really shouldn't bother BO, it's tedious and off putting.
Defence remained strong all day, very aggressive and with a ref that wasn't overly keen to even up the mismatch, Tigers would have had a lot less possession.
A couple of excellent tries, lots of moves tried, though too many passes missed their man, but real signs of progress.

I loved it, its obvious your not happy unless you have a whine BO, in a crowded frantic end to the season take 5 points and keep our best players fresh.

Bath took a while to wake up, then looked pretty good IMO. No coincidence that the play goes backwards when Spencer comes off - Max Green would be my No.2 SH now in the Randall mould. Roko still doesn't look like scoring a wingers try any time soon, give GHW a chance. Bath still working out the new rules and go to ground too much for me still, which is always going to stand a good chance of getting a whistle. Positives were the front 5 again, RM looked excellent and Cameron R had a decent first appearance. TDG looked sharp too.
Next 2 games will really show us all where Bath are of course, but 10 points and no obvious injuries is good enough for me.

I really like Spencer. need to see how it all pans out but he plays whats on, couple of times instead of just passing to RP as the designated 10 he went to the flat runner, Repath and JJ as examples. JM needs a bit of practice at 1o, kicking particularly!

It was impossible for old codgers like me to understand the majority of his decisions with 90% plus of penalties being awarded against Bath. The mathematical chance of this happeneing is nigh on impossible. For a neutral it must have wrecked the entertainment value enormously..
Why not let the rugby flow even if you let things go for the betterment of the game?

As a matter of interest in coach thinking why did Borthers pick a team of youngsters to play against a full team of arch rivals and what if anything did he learn! Seeing the tv shots of the players sitting this out it seemed that there was an air of incredulity with what they were watching!
The refs primary role it to apply the laws of the game. Its not his fault if the players continually break them - its not like he could (or should) turn a blind eye to make the game flow faster? The penalty count ended up being Tigers 10, Bath 18. Most of the Bath ones seemed to be flopping on the ruck, pulling down the maul, side entry, not rolling away - seems fair enough. As an aside I don't think that the pass for the try was forward, but then there weren't any ideal angles so can't be sure (like Austin thinks he was 'miles forward' my bum).

The importance of Priestland to the side in our current situation re fly halves was self evident, I'm sure we all wish things were different but the reality is we are reliant on him and he is not that bad a player! BO you are becoming a pastiche of yourself!!
I think spencer and redpath improve us considerably. Far from perfect but that middle 50 mins was impressive. Poor leic team (tho with lots of promising youngsters) but my ask was get the game won and the bp in the bag by half time to allow us to offload the bench and we did that no fuss.

Clear evidence of our back 3 becoming more involved in our team play, which is good to see, and I thought Rhys played well (altho under little pressure) but Matavesi as our second 10 worries me a bit. Also, our famed ability to switch off once we have a comfortable lead on show again. At least we got the BP before we did it.

Genuinely weird selection by Borthwick. They need performances and learning, but they don’t need points, so why bother ‘targeting’ the LI game and, effectively chucking the Bath game? Youngsters learn by having some experienced players to lean on, not by getting shellacked.

I can only assume they are firmly focussed on europe and basing selections around that?
Equally it shows the scale of how weak Tigers squad is tbh. Compare with the team we'll likely start on Wednesday.
Mismanagement of Tigers squad over the past 5-6 years is a scandal up there with how the RFU have squandered all the world cup money.

As soon as the teams were announced it was a lose-lose situation for Bath. Win and it’s no big deal, lose and it’s embarrassing.
No idea about the quality of performance, but purely based on the score we seem to be 5-10pts short of what we should have scored.
Can only beat who is in front of you so just take the 5pts and move on.

Yes we can only beat what is in front of us, but some of Dickson's reffing was poor in the extreme. He let Cole push across the front row onto Walker, destabilising what had been a relatively solid set of scrums. However, the length of time taken over resets and restarts seemed like another water break to me. We had to win and, as sone said, we were on a hiding to nothing here.
Our pack, with Stuart and Dunn leading the way, is becoming very effective and I watched how much work McNally gets through. It is awesome.
Spencer is a real find and class operator. JJ and young Redpath and de DV had their moments as did Matevesi. Mac on the wing is getting better and threatens with ball on hand.

We’ve beaten two under performing teams & our pack is excellent. That is clear. As to the capability of the team as a cohesive unit I have yet to be convinced. Probably our position is about right . As has been said, Wednesday will better inform us. Player wise, I fear Roko has lost his edge & we need to decide who is our interim replacement fly half. Our centres don’t appear to display the threat of those teams around us. JJ is far more impressive when wearing an England shirt. Hopefully we’ll see Joe soon but I do regret that we lost Woodburn to Exeter as he such an intelligent team player. It was a pity we didn’t see what he had to offer.

Put that down to Mike Ford Bath Hammer. I have spoken to Olly and it is apparent he really didn't get a chance or was never considered very highly. Under Mr Baxter and Ali Hepher, his game and performances have come on in leaps and bounds and he is highly rated and makes a huge difference in both attack and in particular in defence. He is rock solid under the high ball and an excellent chaser and fetcher of kicks.

To be fair Woodburn left in 2015 and wasn't that great when he was at Bath in a season where Bath were pretty special. Roko was also at the peak of his powers that year and looked twice the player OW was when they played opposite each other. Definitely best for OW to have moved on IMO.

It’s water under the bridge but however good the coaches were/are at Exeter I still think we failed to recognise his qualities at the time but it’s impossible to get everything right.
Things do seem to be moving in the right direction at last. The pack is working well esp with the driving maul being very effective and great to watch. Spencer is a real breath of fresh air. With a first class 10 to link up with , they could be very dangerous. Overall , I don't know what they're putting in the teams water bottles and I don't care as long as they keep doing it . Saints will be a real test but looking forward to it.
