Premiership: 31 Years On

With the new season only a couple of weeks away it feels a good time to brush up on our history. Over the last few weeks I have sourced data going back to the 1987-88 season and have put together an interactive visualisation detailing various elements of the English premiership's history. That's 31 seasons crossing from the Amateur Era to Professionalism. This has been created to hopefully cater for both new supporters and more experienced veterans of the English game.  Click the link below to access the interactive tables:

Beginning with a brief fact finding section about the current premiership clubs and moving to a short history lesson on the league's most successful clubs and periods of dominance, including a comparison on Amateur and Professional era. 

The following sections concentrate on a more detailed look at the Professional era, beginning with a match-by-match hotspot focussed on successful winning period for each team - use the controls to flex the ranges to find your own clubs most successful period of games. 

There is a Head-to-Head section that allows you to compare two clubs results against each other directly, to find who comes out on top. 

A number of charts focus on your clubs ability to score tries and to what extent are the more successful teams topping the try scoring charts? Or is keeping tries out more or just as important. 

There is a look at home stadium attendance levels versus the capacity of the stadium at that time (built on a match-by-match basis). Which teams fill their stadiums consistently, who plays in a virtually empty ground? Have a side expanded their ground but are failing to fill it? 

Lastly, going back to the full 31 year history (of this data), There is a traditional look at the league finishes of each side, highlighting the champions. 
All the charts are interactive, hover your cursor over data points or select to reveal more information or even additional charts. 

The platform this is published on does not allow for zooming in and out, so you will find your user experience will vary depending on your own device resolution. 

Give the visual a couple of seconds to load in the first instance (you can tell when it's complete when the colours deepen and the lines and text sharpen). 

It'll be great to hear any feedback you have, good or bad and particularly constructive! There is always scope to add and alter to this visualisation and even add to it during the course of the season. 

Most of all have fun playing with it and see what you can find and discover!

Great stuff. Thanks ! Must have been a lot of effort to do this. Much appreciated. Some interesting stats / trends in there.

There's 1 other measure i'd love to see - KO time / day.
Obvs probably mostly a traditional 3pm Sat in the amateur days I'd guess. But would be interesting to see how its changed in the pro era, and also which clubs get stiffed the most vs preferred times.
(Anecdotally, it seems like Barf, Tigers and Stains get the rough end of that stick, but would be really intetesting to see if that holds true).

I think I did have that measure, but filtered it out along with match day scorers. Purely because the data was large enough as it was.

If I develop this any further, I'll take a look.
