The silly season is the period lasting for a few summer months typified by the emergence of frivolous news stories in the media. The term was coined in an 1861 Saturday Review article, and is listed in the first edition of "Everything Blue, Black & White" which goes on to expand the definition defining the silly season as "the part of the year when Bath aren't playing (about July and August).
As COML is a widely respected member of the media there is no reason for it not to follow the silly season tradition with our resident chief correspondent and analyst PG tips rusticating on his private island leaving the frivolous to write the weekly article, so here it is. Stumped for a subject the frivolous and the tea boy retreated to the nearest hostelry for inspiration whilst watching the last drops of rugby slip past in New Zealand, with the final whistle blown the tea boy observed all that way, all that hope, all that money (if you went) not to mention the round ballers and for what? So here's the frivolous's biggest and most expensive away game flops
Wasps v Bath 7th Feb 1999 35 - 0 (Lucky to get nil) - Allied Dunbar Premiership
My first away game as a spectator having recently retired from playing armed with a brand new away shirt, I was even dim enough to speculate we might get something from this as I sat amongst the Loftus Road faithful. How wrong I was! My most abiding memory was watching big Vic Ubogu trudging back to the halfway line as we had to restart yet again. So impressed I trudged off to Shepherds Bush Tube station and promptly lost my return ticket!
Bath v Leeds 20th April 2005 12 -20 - Powergen Final
Thought I'd make a weekend of this by staying up in the big city with some of the guys. Given the manner in which we lost with Malone slotting four penalties against two tries for Leeds sums up Bath's completely clueless attack despite having the likes of OB1 and Mad dog in the side. This made the post match celebrations the most muted affair ever even after investing in some laughing bubbles.
Edinburgh v Bath 19th Dec 2009 9 -6 Heineken Cup
Booked the tickets, flights and accommodation as soon as the fixture list came out. Shame about the snow then which closed both Bristol and Edinburgh airports, still got there though after waiting some 16 hours in the lap of airport lounge luxury. Experienced the Murrayfield swirl, a delightfully romantic name to describe the wind blowing the snow so hard it looks like it's snowing indoors. Didn't see the game despite being there! Seeing Nicky Little looking like a pint of guiness at half time was the only bit of action I saw that day.
I'm sure the august body that is the COML community can trump these so get writing!

The Stade Francais game in Paris, January 2010 was one. Seats were holding about an inch of rain water, spent the game sat on half a plastic bag, rushing to drink €5 Heinekens before the rain filled the glasses up!

Not much is worse than a 50 point shoeing at Vicarage Road.
