As tentatively forecast in Part 1 of this preview, Dimes has selected something close to an A team to face Wasps in what amounts to a dead match in the Powergen Cup. Will we hear complaints from Craig Dowd? Perhaps not this time!
This is a great opportunity for a number of younger players to get some experience playing alongside and against premiership players. It also makes a lot of sense to give the likes of Glen Jackson a week off prior to the Heineken games against Ulster.
Wasps do not have the strongest pack in the premiership, so Arron Liffchak and Andy Kyriakou, who have done a superb job for the A team this year, will really relish lining up with Ben Broster to take them on, and Tom Ryder has been doing a fine job as A team captain and will do well alongside Sunday’s captain Kris Chesney. We know something of the speed of Steffon Armitage at 8 and it will be good to see Manu Amapakabo in action too. The backs may lack a little experience, but I think they will look pretty sharp, with the most robust presence coming from Nicki Little at 10.
This is not a side that will go to London High Wycombe with any plans to surrender, and I think it may prove to be a very entertaining game. There is also, of course, the chance that Dimes is playing mind games again, and the team that runs out could be different again. Might we even see someone come off the bench for their first proper game of Rugby Union?
