England call for Cairns

May 15 2003

Saracens hooker Matt Cairns is among 15 new faces called up by coach Clive Woodward for the England squad to face the Barbarians at Twickenham. The match, to be played on 25 May, will give Woodward a chance to decide upon his final summer tour selections and it is an opportune time for Cairns - rumoured to be leaving for Sale Sharks - to repay the faith shown in him by the England management.

Joining Cairns in the squad are Saracens David Flatman, Kevin Sorrell, Ben Johnston and Kyran Bracken and also Alex Codling who will join the Men in Black for 2003-04.

Woodward said on the RFU site:

"A number of other players have the opportunity push hard for selection on May 25th and I'm delighted that Matthew Cairns (Saracens), Dan Hyde (Leeds Tykes) and Michael Lipman (Bristol Shoguns) have all developed so well during the season. It's good to see players like David Flatman and Dave Walder returning to their old form after long periods of injury and I'm sure the squad will be well led by Phil Vickery and Kyran Bracken."
