Northampton Saints v Saracens Premiership Cup Preview

By saracensfan62
February 26 2026

This is as significant as a development competition fixture gets. Saracens currently sit third in Pool B, with qualification hopes gone after our disappointing recent defeat to Leicester at the StoneX, making this a game of pride going into the final pool round. Meanwhile, Northampton secured their semi-final spot last weekend with a resounding 49-21 victory over Newcastle Red Bulls, meaning this game will determine their pool ranking in the final four — and crucially, whether they face Leicester or another opponent at the semi-final stage. I know we are 5 points behind Northampton, but even a 5 point victory would not be enough, as we would’ve won 1 fewer game than the Saints. This is a long preview, strap yourselves in folks and grab a cuppa or two. Maybe a biscuit if you fancy.

The last time these two sides met in the Premiership, it wasn't pretty for us Sarries fans. The curse of the Gardens continued. A rampant Saints side proved far too much to handle, winning 43-31 though the wolfpack did cross five times to secure a losing bonus point. Both squads here are developmental and academy squads compared to those Premiership sides, but the psychological edge is firmly with the home side.

For us sarries fans, the message is simple: win and we go home, lose and we go home. A bonus-point victory would be a huge booster for us going into the tail end of the international break and allow us to start on the front foot with the away game vs Bath in the Premiership not that far away now. I expect that one to be a season-defining game.

The Cup so far

Northampton Saints have been the form team of Pool B. Last weekend's win was Saints' third bonus-point victory in a row in the Cup and coach James Craig has praised the Saints’ focus and cohesion. Their Cup results really do show some impressive things: big wins over Leicester Tigers (40-22), Harlequins (40-24), and Newcastle (49-21) in their last three outings, having beaten us in the reverse fixture back in mid-September 2025. They are going into this match with momentum, confidence, and nothing to lose having secured a spot. Plus the Gardens is a fortress for them and it takes guts to beat them at home.

Saracens have had a mixed Cup campaign. We were performing so well in early rounds, including a win over Harlequins, but a 26-31 defeat to Leicester at StoneX, where they held a first-half lead before the Tigers scored three second-half tries including a decisive 76th-minute score, has nilled their chances of going through. The defeats against both Harlequins (also a very late loss, with Quins scoring the winning try 8 minutes into stoppage time) exposed a lack of consistency over a full 80 minutes and perhaps lack of match fitness — something that will need to be corrected urgently ahead of the visit to Franklin's Gardens.

Squad Takes

Both clubs are very much fielding development squads in this competition, giving fringe players and academy talent valuable senior minutes. There are some senior heads (Tom James, Sleightholme in the Saints squad and Lozo, Roti in Saracens team). The Saracens' transition coach James Tirrell has spoken of the "great buzz" in the group, with players spending a lot of time together either on loan or in training.

Northampton's likely XV (based on their Newcastle lineup) is built around a settled, physical core. Up front, locks Ed Prowse and captain Chunya Munga will look to dominate the lineout, with the backrow of Archie Benson, Charlie Ulcoq, and Sam Graham providing some significant grunt and carry threat. In the backs, fly-half Anthony Belleau will be the key decision-maker, with Tom james on his inside and Sleightholme and Hendy out wide and James Martin a composed presence at wing. Yes, you read that correctly. Not the TV Chef, but the ex-championship player James Martin. I did a double take and wondered if, at the ripe old age of 53, the cook wonder extraordinaire had thrown his pans aside and joined Northampton. I googled it just to make sure
Back to the preview... experience of George Hendy — who famously scored in last season's Premiership run — is available again and he really is a threat ball-in-hand and aerially.

Saracens' likely XV should feature a similar line-up to their Newcastle game. Nick Isiekwe and the promising Olamide Sodeke (an England U20 international) give Sarries real physicality in the engine room. In the back row, Nathan Michelow and Charlie West provide work-rate and dynamism, with the former being the captain of Sarries with authority at No. 8. The halfback pairing of Charlie Bracken and Louie Johnson must control tempo and territory, while the experienced Tompkins alongside Olly Hartley in midfield provides the class and game management that could prove decisive. In the back three, the youthful and rapid Roti and Tobias combo with Angus Hall at full-back, give Saracens real pace in broken play and threat aerially to combat the likes of Hendy.

Tactical Analysis

Northampton have managed to score a highly impressive 129 points in their last three Cup matches, and watching how those points have come illuminates a very clear identity. Saints have always played with significant intensity and tempo, using the forwards to win the gain line early before quickly spreading the ball wide. Against Newcastle, the pattern was consistent throughout: build through forward phases to earn field position in the opposition 22, then release the backs to find the space — a move that saw Toby Thame pick up a brace, Hendy and McParland combine brilliantly off a tip pass, and Ollie Sleightholme dummying his way through for a solo stunner of a try. Their style really is lovely to watch, as long as you are not supporting the team they are playing!

The key to everything right now seems to be Anthony Belleau. The fly-half put in a masterclass at Kingston Park, not missing a single kick from seven attempts while also creating and running lines to keep the defence honest. He is very much the heartbeat of Saints' attack, he is an expert in managing tempo, varying the kicking and carrying game intelligently, and getting his centres involved early. When Belleau is allowed to operate with quick ball, Northampton are a nightmare to defend. Belleau really seems to have come a long way since his arrival last year from the struggling Clermont Auvergne. He has found his feet in the saints side and may even start to rival England international Fin Smith for the starting 10 shirt.

Tom Litchfield's individual brilliance sparked the opening try at Newcastle with a big break through midfield, which speaks to the way Saints use their centres as first receivers and battering rams before switching the point of attack. The backrow of Benson, Ulcoq and Graham provide the engine — physical over the ball and relentless at the breakdown, generating the quick-ball platform the backs need to carve open unwitting defences.

The other striking quality of this Saints team has been their mental resilience. They came back from 19-0 down at Harlequins the week before Newcastle to win comfortably, demonstrating that this isn't a side that folds under pressure. They have character as well as quality, and that matters enormously in a must-win knockout-style environment like Saturday.

Northampton's recent Cup wins have been characterised by quick ball from the breakdown, wide-channel attack, and aggressive counter-rucking. Coach Craig has spoken about keeping the focus on themselves rather than previewing the opposition heavily. That mindset that has paid dividends and I believe will continue to do so. We can Expect Saints to play with high tempo, stretching Saracens' defensive line early before committing forwards to carry.

Saracens' Cup campaign has shown two contrasting faces, sometimes within the same match. At their best, they play with real attacking energybuilding momentum through forward phases, their backs finding space in midfield, and showing clinical finishing from the wide channels. Against Leicester, that saw them reach 21–7 with three excellent tries that showcased the full breadth of their attacking game. Alex Lozowski's chip ahead created their opening score, Tayo Adegbemile bulldozed over from outside the 22 after a neat lineout move, and Rotimi Segun was found in space by Olly Hartley's looping pass for the third. The attacking flair is visible and clear to the eye, it’s just whether we can express it properly that counts.

The variety there is genuinely encouraging. Louie Johnson at fly-half has shown he can vary the game — kicking for territory, executing cross-field kicks, and creating with ball in hand. But the numbers from earlier in the Cup campaign are sobering for the wolfpack. In their earlier Cup defeat to Harlequins, Saracens dominated territory, possession, and 22 entries (11 to Quins' 5) yet scored only one try — conceding 13 penalties in the process. The execution inside the opposition 22 and the discipline in contact areas have been recurring gremlins.

The second-half fade, though, is the most alarming pattern. Against Leicester at StoneX, Saracens went in 21-12 up at half-time looking in control, but Leicester emerged from the break with renewed intensity and tactical adjustment, dominated possession and territory, and scored three second-half tries — including a 76th-minute winner — to snatch a 31-26 bonus-point victory. Crucially, two yellow cards in the closing stages — Tuimauga and Isiekwe both sent to the bin for side entry at a breakdown left Saracens defending with 13 men at a critical moment. Disclipine woes and a lack of impact from the bench has been partially responsible for such issues.

That discipline statistic is the thread that runs through Sarries' defeats. Their physicality at the breakdown is a genuine weapon, but it regularly tips over into infringements at the worst possible times, handing opponents momentum and field position late in matches. Saracens simply cannot afford to gift saints the scoreboard opportunities they gave Leicester in the second half, as Saints (I’d argue) are far more clinical than leicester and more efficient in the red zone.

If Sarries can hold their discipline, maintain their first-half intensity for a full 80 minutes, and convert their 22 entries more ruthlessly — the template for a win is clearly there. The question is whether this group has the maturity and the game management to execute it away from home.

Saracens, for their part, need to avoid the second-half fade that cost them so dearly against Leicester. The pattern in that game — leading at half-time before conceding three second-half tries — is alarming. At Franklin's Gardens, where the crowd will be firmly against them, discipline and physicality at the set piece will be crucial. If they can win the scrum and disrupt Saints' lineout, it disrupts the game plan that has been so potent in recent weeks.

The kicking game will also be key. Saracens can't afford to play conservatively — they need to attack and score tries, not settle for penalties. As for Saints, it doesn’t really matter I suppose.

Key Matchups

Anthony Belleau vs Louie Johnson — The Fly-Half Battle This is where the game could be decided. Belleau is an experienced operator who will look to keep the ball in hand and exploit space after contact. Johnson, meanwhile, will be under pressure to control field position and get Saracens on the front foot. Sarries have the firepower to winif Johnson can dictate long-distance kicking and pin the saints back. If Belleau is allowed to dictate and run his own backline, Saints will be dangerous.

Nick Isiekwe & Olamide Sodeke vs Ed Prowse & Chunya Munga — The Locks Battle The Saracens engine room sees the experienced Isiekwe partnered with England U20 international Sodeke. a combination that should offer both physicality and lineout security. Saints' Prowse and skipper Munga have been consistent throughout the Cup run. This is a battle that will shape how much front-foot ball each team gets.

Nick Tompkins vs Tom Litchfield — Midfield Control In the Sarries team, Tompkins is the most experienced player on the pitch for this game. His ability to organise the defensive line, step into space, and execute under pressure will be critical for Saracens. Saints' Tom Litchfield has been direct and abrasive throughout the Cup campaign. If we can get a strangehold on Litchfield and win the gain-line battle in midfield, Saracens will be in a strong position.

The Backrow Collision Both teams have energetic back-row trios who will be hunting turnover ball. Saints' Sam Graham at No. 8 has been one of their standout players in the Cup, while Saracens' Michelow will be desperate to lead from the front in a match his side simply must win. The breakdown will be a battleground.

Final Thoughts

On current Cup form, Northampton are certainly the favourites. Three bonus-point wins in a row, a settled squad, and the comfort of playing at home with their semi-final already booked. Things are looking up for them, and they have every reason to play with as little or as much freedom as they wish. For Saracens, the pressure is also off. We cannot qualify so why not through caution to the wind and play some expansive, exciting rugby?

That said, any Wolfpack is not a team to be written off. If we can get the structures right for a full 80 minutes and defend/shutdown the Saintswe do have the quality to spring a result on them. All that is left to say is come on you Sarries! Enjoy, all those attending and cheer loudly for the wolfpack.

Article in the Times today suggested Theo Dan has been released to play for us and Furbank for Saints

Considering it’s the deadest of dead rubbers that is an almighty write up.

No news on Bracken and Hall’s injuries but I doubt we’ll the former again this season from the description I hear don the Fezcast.

I’m genuinely gutted at the past two performances at home, we should be playing for a home semi here. We’ve also got this great young crop and yet we’ve barely seen a lot of them them due to injury again.

Sodeke certainly was injured and wearing a boot two weeks ago, so I suspect Nick I will start again unless we decide Big Theo needs a game.
Similarly in the backs Max Malins might get a run. You’d think Daly would be released back if Furbank was but when did logic ever win out?
Scrum half will be interesting, can we afford to risk Ivan and Gareth together? Might see Asa as England U 20 not playing, so maybe Luke Davidson and Finn Keylock too.
Saints will be clear favourites but I’m hoping we show some intent and spirit.

Asa didn’t play in the last u20s match so I wonder about his fitness but it’d be great to see him get a run out as I’ve heard he’s a big talent but not really seen him play.

Great to see Elliott back. Beaton at tighthead, is Street injured then?

Loz bouncing around the backline like it’s 2018 but I’m sure he’ll be more comfortable at 10 and good practice for him before he goes to Sale.

From an England perspective both Dan and Furbank released to get minutes. With LCD and Steward both hooked early they must be in the running for selection.

Far stronger than I was expecting but injuries have undoubtedly forced some of this,

Fingers crossed for a decent game and everyone staying fit!

It's a shame this isn't on TV as those are two good sides.

Looking at the other teams being fielded this weekend it really is a horrible mess of everything from full 23s bar missing Internationals to full second teams.
They really need to put some structure into place as to what this competition is for.

yes its a dead rbber but nothing is sweeter than beating Northampton, especially in their own backyard, or garden, i should say lol.

You can only laugh at this point. Hopefully we’ll get this out of our system before we start up the prem again but with the way our season has been going I won’t get my hopes up. We should really be preparing for a semi final now, amazing ability not to see out 3 matches in a row.

TommyKentish
28/02/2026 17:08
I’ve had 3 surgeries in the past year, the first two times I’ve made it back to a home match and we suffered losses to Quins at the showdown last year and Exeter at home. Apologies but my first match back after the most recent surgery will be the Showdown so I may have jinxed it advance. 😅

The Radio Northants commentator was diametrically opposite! However, he ended up cheering

PaulHerox
28/02/2026 17:32
Radio Northampton lasted for the first try minutes in and then only got it back for the last 5 minutes.

If it hadn't been the usual capitulation that sounds like it would have been an enjoyable game.
Was Lozo's miss for Dan's try a hard one?

MarkCol7
28/02/2026 17:36
The commentators were singing Harvey Beatons praises

TommyKentish

I’ve been willing Beaton on more than most for years now, would love to see him come good for us.

I was there. They dropped the kick off from which we scored only to gift them 7 back through poor defence on the wing. Back in front only to gift them another after a lot of heroic defence. You felt we were hanging on at half time having had tge advantage of the slope.
But we dominated the start of the second half with two tries, and although they got one back a Loz interception during desperate defence set up Jackson off the 12 point lead.
At which point the Saints fans start streaming out and I say to my son this is far from over.
And sure enough, two Hendy breaks down the left without us laying a hand on him Giveth them the win.
Very frustrating the last one from us messing up a lineout at their end with less than 2 mins on the clock.
Pater nailed the winning conversion after a torrid start but he got all his kicks.
Loz hit the post with his only miss.
A draw would actually have been a fair result.
Theo Dan superb, all lineouts on the money and bags of energy.
Sadly Brantingham off very early with what may be shoulder injury.

TommyKentish

Thanks Bard, appreciate the review.

Glad to hear Dan was throwing well today, he may need it next week!

Of course there’s the requisite injury to a promising youngster, how frustrating for him after being out for a long time.

Our forwards put in a really good shift, close range defence very good and the set piece good under pressure. We handled Van Der Mescht as well as you can.
Had hoped to see more from Christie and it’s a pity big Tayo only got 5 minutes at the end.
Davidson looks pretty nippy ball in hand, Elliot played 40 mins and looked pretty solid.

Apparently the official club account tweeted “is there a fire drill” when we were 12 points up then deleted it. I don’t mind a bit of @#$%& talking if done with humour in mind but maybe wait until the match is over and don’t delete the tweet. Not a good look.

Having seen a clip of the Hendy try it looks to be the same old story.

Tompkins making a tackle, for no reason Jackson looks to step in and gets himself twisted up. He then slips off Hendy as he tries to recover and leaves Davidson with a 2 on 1. Roti then slips off the covering tackle

Poor defensive reads that just don't need to be made. Tompkins had his man and it should have been a 2 on 2 on the outside

That being said, lovely balanced running from Hendy who made it all look pretty easy.

Tackling does seem to have been optional for a few too many of our backs these last few weeks. IVZ and NT are 2 exceptions. But we are not ever going to win anything with a defence as porous as that. No longer the wolf pack!

I've just watched it on highlights and it looked a bit different to me.
Tompkins definitely doesn't have his man he misses him as he goes around the outside. Jackson steps in to try and get something on him but fails to do so. Davidson (not for the first or last time in he highlights) doesn't make any tackle but puts himself between two attackers impacting neither. Roti haring across tries to get him but as you say the Saints player slips the low tackle.

As said above I think you have to credit the quality of the attack and support too which we know is a Saints strength.
I think it's not so much about what we did after the fact as trying to stop them getting opportunities to break from their 22 in the first place and being aware they will try that. We look slow to react a bit too much.

You might be thinking of the 2nd last try where Hendy just runs round Tompkins and Jackson has to try and cover whilst backpedaling

The last try, Tompkins is on Pater and takes him round the waist. He offloads to Hendy who runs free.

However, seeing a different angle it actually looks to be Cinti jumping out the line that puts Jackson in no man's land. So frustrating that simple drift defense would probably deal with it.

I have some sympathy for Davisdon as on both occasions he is trying to deal with a 2 on 1 whilst running backwards.

Sorry Sarrov you're quite right I was getting the trys mixed up.

I think that's a reasonable comment re Davidson. I just felt the issue is he ends up having no impact at all by not really committing to either defender.

I agree, he should really make a decision. A more experienced head i would expect to take Hendy and force the pass but appreciate he is young and learning the position.

Our defence inside the 22 was excellent all afternoon. Nearly all the problems from attacks further out.

Despite the large numbers leaving in the fire drill, it was a very impressive crowd and a great atmosphere. Noticed they were pushing tickets for the ‘Shoedown’ outside the ground before the match.

Agreed. A sell out or very close too is great going for such a game and Saints players delivered.

It's almost as if attractive well coached rugby was an attractive proposition as a viewer!
Let's hope that we will be more than spectators in the crowd and on the field for the Showdown.

The fact is hundreds were leaving, and I’m not sure that many got back in to see the climax.

Half the stadium could have gone home and still been more left than sarries get for a home game.

Were you one of them? You are right it was a crowd size we can only dream of. Annoyingly out Prem Cup games have clashed with England games whereas Saturday was free from such competition

We sold out the previous Prem Cup game which was on a nations weekend.

Team based in a town with nothing else to do and undergoing a successful period on the pitch sells tickets. Must be a first

So of course Pater only has one kick at goal for the England U20’s tonight and misses by miles …
