Saracens Top 10 Busts - Gavin Henson

By The Fezboys
August 14 2012

Our next instalment of Top 10 Busts is a man who needs no introduction. So here goes:

Name: Gavin Henson

International Caps: 33, Wales

Joined from: A long sabbatical at Ospreys

Time at Sarries: 2010-2011

Appearances 4

Points: None

Famous for: Being orange, Charlotte Church’s ex, a serious of embarrassing “reality” television show appearances, notably “The Bachelor” drunken behaviour on public transport getting him into trouble; not staying at any club more than five minutes. Oh, we almost forgot a Lions tour and two Grand Slams.

Hype: Some in the Fez fraternity believe that it was a cunning bit of marketing bringing in Henson just in time for a debut at Wembley in the 2010 Boxing Day match against London Wasps in order to get more bums on seats. The Ospreys were “disappointed” and “frustrated” to lose their star player, but Sarries were relatively low-key with their comments, and the man himself said "Now it's time to start working hard, getting back to match fitness as soon as possible and then to let my rugby do all the talking."

Reality: It seemed an age before Henson finally made that debut as a sub at Wembley due to his continued failure to get voted off Strictly Come Dancing during the autumn of 2010. A solitary start in a heavy defeat at Sale and two further replacement appearances came and went, with the final one being a cameo in the hammering  by Leinster in Dublin, when he had to be replaced himself after getting injured.

Most memorable Sarries moment: Henson almost caused a sensation by scoring a try with his very first touch in a Sarries shirt. Unluckily for him and for Sarries, Wasps scrum half Joe Simpson got his body between the ball and the ground or there might have been some excruciating headlines in the papers the following day.

What happened next: No need to write much as Gav lives his life in the tabloid headlines. Failed attempts to re-start his career at Toulon and Cardiff Blues came and went, and his latest visit to the Last Chance Saloon now comes at London Welsh, where he will be re-united with his former Ospreys boss Lyn Jones.

Arguably the most predictable inclusion.

I think its a note in itself that GH spent more time signing autographs at VR than he spent on the pitch at VR

I watched Strictly to see if he could be voted off and get down to playing for Sarries.

He spent all his time looking at the monitors to see if he was in shot!

Seems how his world revolves!!

That game at Sale was a disaster for him and for Sarries (for playing him). He was more like a matador, ole and through you g!. Any ruck saw our Gav hopping around behind it, letting others put their bodies on the line. He was more interested in protecting his boat than helping his team.

I thought we had seen something in him to have taken a punt on him.

I was wrong, well wrong.

Good luck to London Welsh!

It seems he played well, last weekend down at Bath.

I'm hoping Brad will be back for that Welsh game

Whether he plays well for Welsh, or not, against us or anyone else, is irrelevant. HIs time at Sarries was the worst example of self before team that I had ever seen. He set new standards of hubris that have never been equalled. Or should I say were only equalled when the makers of some brand of nut started sponsoring a cricketer who changed his initials to suit their marketing demands.

I'm hoping Jacques will be back & will welcome him the same way he said 'Hi' to Tom Varndell (Sm100)

Two other Henson memories:

First, his complete inability to remember the names of pretty much any other player at Sarries - surely a new low from a signing even given our history?

Secondly, Adam Powell smashing Henson to the ground in a crunching tackle on a fantastic spring afternoon back in April 2008. He lost the ball, spent a few minutes rolling around and had to go off!

What a c**k...

Can there really be four more to compare with the six already in this list? I can't wait for the next instalment!

I suspect that the compilers' greatest challenge was whittling the list down to 10 (Sm22)

It's a long time since Sports network paid anything!

Injured his cheekbone yesterday and expected to be out until the new year. Oh dear......
