Staying

By Wildwillie
April 4 2016

As we approach the end of the regular season it is becoming apparent that the club is busy behind the scenes sorting out the players who they want want to retain for next season and those they are releasing. That on the back of the chairman's stated target of seven new signings....

To keep matters simple there will only be three categories for the players: Coming, going and staying. Already Buzz is being quoted on here as staying which is good news for us. For the coming and going categories I will wait for official confirmation from either the club or Rocky the Tyke before posting on here. If anyone comes across any snippets post them on this thread and I will add them when Rocky or the club confirm them as fact.

We know from recent communications from the club that certain players know they are not wanted for next season, and that some have been promised new contracts.
Starting with what I think are the facts:
Ollie Stedman has signed for us for next season from Donny
Jack Walker is leaving to play for Bath
Now, looking at the evidence provided by the Offie "2015/16 player list":
No sign of Tom Casson, Jon Clarke or James Fitzpatrick

Anyone any other news/speculation?

I wasn't born in Yorkshire but I got here as soon as I could

Walker to Bath is rumoured but bit confirmed yet. Jon Clarke is now working at Rotherham as backs coach.

Today's rumours

McColl coming back from Glaws
Riki Tipuna (Scrum half) from Newcastle
Richard Mayhew (back row) from Newcastle
Michael Mayhew (hooker) from Waikato.

Wee Stevie back would be good. Seen him on the Premiership highlights and it looks like he's finally figured out how how to get himself past the chippy without going in!

All I remember about Ruki Tipuna is that he's very short and enjoys a chat with the referee. Think I'd rather have Hampo back tbh.

Yeah all in the rugby paper sounds promising. Mccoll would be a great signing. The number 9 Tipuna would do a good job add experience at 9. Big Newcastle feel coming into our club with the two brother Stedman ex Newcastle and Taiters. Nice to see players being linked with coming in rather than leaving

Stevie McColl was one of the best performers for the club during the 2011–12 season, although he was ruled out for three months after undergoing surgery on his shoulder, and only made just 13 first-team appearances.

His second season he was in equally impressive form, with only injuries preventing him from being an ever present.

He made his presence known whenever on the field and was a great addition to the team.

At the end of the season he earned reward for his performances being named Players’ Player of the Season for the 2012–13 season, earning a place in the RFU Championship 'Dream Team'

He's been playing on the wing for Gloucester and playing really well from the bits and pieces I've seen. As he says, he's lost loads of weight and looks in peak condition.

In his current shape he's a really good addition to the squad for next year.

Brilliant news.... I hope. He put in some amazing performances for us...attacking from depth and with a blistering hoof....pace and strength... Can we please have him for the play offs??

I hope you are right Leeming...about fitness. There were long injury spells...and times at the end of his contract that he looked more than a bit slowed down and sluggish?

But IF he has got back to peak fitness?? then I am heartened by the quality of our signings.

Thinking of our poss 'friendly' against Donny.....I am keen to know from when he might be available from our friends at Glaws???

Well done Bryn!!

Good to see the planned incomings for next season. Know it's not been formally announced but Fissler is usually right. Could be a real scrap for top four next season with a number of contenders. From what i read in the RP Welsh are recruiting hard and putting together a back division to match their pack.

He bulked up massively when he knackered his shoulder and by then he'd already signed for Glaws. They went potty at the size of him. When we played them in the preseason he'd lost tons and said he still had a good 1st (or may be more - long time ago) to go.

According to a Jersey press release their forwards coach. Steve Boden, is taking up a similar role with us next season. It says he was here before but it isn't striking a chord with my unreliable memory.

I seem to recall that Schofield expressed a desire to move into coaching when he joined us so presumably he will have to look elsewhere for such a role.

He will be missed on the last couple of games but on the season as a whole? For me, no. Good at 15 but we have mccoll coming back. At 10 he is to inconsistent.
Dudman suffered with injuries and been overtaken by Green. Shame as I liked him. Pilgrim just too slow to worry a defence.
Let's hope they are replaced with quality.

His all round game improved and one of the points of KS was to help young players surely?

His place kicking percentage was better than KS and after being stifled by GM last year really seemed to have matured this year before KS came along

In gutted by this if I'm honest welcome to the 3 new signings who coupled with Harry would have given plenty of options.

Were told 7 signings we now have had 9. Maybe rug been pulled from under us for a couple but

Allowing KS and JH go (thier decision who knows) and then releasing HL CP retiring and replacing them with a 9/10 and a 10 with young Max Green in situ surely more on way?

Also, concerned by the youtube showreel of Davies - box kicking a lot which is a tactic abused and overused already.

Davies is very experienced, Gray has an interesting history if you look it up, played back row, moved to Centre, and highly promising as a junior so still ambitious. Assume Redpath and Baldwin may have been around at Sale when Ford moved there so they must rate him. He can kick long and from the tee.

Fair enough JDH.

I agree he's limited and I agree that the difference when we first saw Lozzer and Glyn was marked. Suddenly we had a running threat from 10 which had the secondary benefit of keeping the opposing defence honest.

I don't think that's the be all and end all though. Andy Goode isn't exactly pacy and he's pretty much single handedly saved Falcons from the drop this year. Farrell and Gopperth aren't exactly renowned for their ability to streak through a gap either and they're doing ok at Premiership level.

He's had 3 years around Cipriani and MacLeod, is still only 25 and is a very good kicker from what I remember. I'm willing to give him another chance.

All that said, I agree with Opus that we need another 10 as well.

Seemed a decent deputy to Cips at Sale so i look forward to him returning and will give him a chance at least to show what he's made of. Alex Davies is a solid hand and pretty dependable.

Currently Brush does not know which division we will be in next season. I suggest that he therefore needs to keep some places vacant in case we win promotion: the addition revenue available will then fund squad reinforcement. No point in filling all the squad places with (high quality) Championship standard players and then having to displace them with some marquee signings.

It is a very tricky situation. Some existing squad members could be I the position that they will have a contract next season only if we do not win promotion - clearly a conflict of interest with the clubs ambition.

Like many before me have said much better...I also have strong reservations about Joe'resigning....based on previous objective evidence. If we are serious about Premiership aspiration then we need Premiership quality fly halfs??

I too remember a rather one dimensional player...a bit timid in attack and a bit soft in defence? He had reasonably gifted boots...but as we have seen this season...that is not enough to orchestrate a game.

I'm sure Joe is a very fine young man in all respects...and it could well be that his time at Sale has toughened him up and developed him as a more creative, intuative and expansive player....I really hope that this is true?? Time will tell...will very quickly tell?

I'm prepared to give anyone a shot at improvement and development but 10 is such a critical position which determines the flow (or not) of each game and has a cumulative impact on the players and the whole Season.

Next time round we need to be better than Irish, Donny, Bristol etc...its crucially important that we get these key appointments right... based on more than 'a wing and a prayer'!

Brush is a good communicater and talks a good game....but he must take on board the significant past experience and wisdom of the fans. Lets hope he has got this one right. Of course, some tentative explanation behind the direction of these appointments might keep us on board and help us all to grasp the bigger picture?

Will probably cough up for a new Season ticket ...but need to see some serious aspiration to straighten out the fault lines....eg 1st leg of Semis!!!!

From the video I say of grey if we have fitness in the backs and pace the offloading from him will be a threat. I think it's a little unfair to call McColl a battering ram now, I think him with Holmes and a.n. Other in the back 3 will be a great thing.

The issue we have had this year is that we do have threats across the park but by the time the ball gets there (slow hands etc) mean that the opportunity dies.

The other concern was the lack of rugby 'intelligence' when the pressure was applied. The 'big game' players we employed did not bring the calm heads we needed and that is something that needs addressing.

I don't mind boring winning rugby but some of the rugby on display was dire and ineffective. We need to have 3 plans next year and not just rely on 1, flexibility is key if we want promotion. Signings must reflect this and brush needs to get the right balance in the match day squad.

Rocky I only meant due to size of Mcoll as even from pics on this thread he has shedded a lot of timber but will still be bigger than any winger we currently have

Cutting in at pace and taking a ball from a full tilt Grey or Buzz in the shape he's in now is a potent weapon if used correctly, our wingers did spend time looking for work this past season but didn't have the size to break tackles when they did cut inside

Fly halves - Joe Ford

At the very least Brush needs to decide which position Alex has been signed to play and sign some serious competition for the other one.

Can't really believe the situation with half backs? Is it time for a Donny season ticket!!!

Why do we always assume that the management knows nothing? Yes, there have been some mistakes but the direction of travel is sensible and thought through.

In god we trust...sometimes?.....but by way of reassurance...it would be good to hear a bit more about the evolving master plan and if it might realistically be enough to compete with Irish and Donny next season....especially in the light of proposed qualification changes? Are we really finished with signings this season? If so it leaves some important questions unanswered? Not a great fan of blind faith?

I notice that the player profiles on the desktop version of the offy have been updated and, just as it was last year, Fred Burdon has quietly disappeared.

Rubbish, in my opinion.

Best of luck Fred.

According to The Rugby Paper we are expected to tie up deals with Jack Whetton a 6ft7 lock current playing Fed1 rugby in France, ex-Brumbies and cousin of the Mayhew brothers.
The other name we are close to signing is Michael Cusack, most recently Falcons as well as Glasgow and of course a former Tyke.

We are apparently interested in Warren Seals a South African 10 playing for Darlington MP. He currently has a year left on his contract so we'd have to buy him out of it.

As Competitive Dad has said Seals has signed which wraps up all of the signings the Rugby Paper mentioned back on the 15th May.

Well spotted CD and RTT!
This is good news, and at least he will be used to playing in a large and, shall we say, not full to capacity stadium.

Got to be honest we need someone, dont know enough about the guy but cant see at that standard he is a marquee signing to cover most important position on the field

i have looked on tinternet etc and cannot find anything about Harry Leonard going to another club if i were brush id try and resign him as back up, he played very well in the opportunities he got last season and genuinely think it was a harsh decision to let him go

So Gray won't get injured in Rio with the GB 7's squad.

Shame for him, but it ought to be good news for us.

Of the others mentioned, Seals was definately signed by us on the Mowden Park website weeks ago.Harry Leonard was reported to have signed with London Welsh some time ago.

Up the Yorkshire Carnegie TYKES !

Noticed on the ins and out in the Rugby Paper for championship teams no mention of our new fly half Seals. Is it real as nothing has appeared on our official website.
Also the London Irish squad looks good. Nothing below premiership

I guess that the Seals thing fell through. IIRC we would have had to pay compensation as he was under contract.
