On a bright Saturday afternoon at Richmond, even before kick-off we were more aware than ever of the impact of a certain players transition to Yorkshire Carnegie when the team line up was announced:- “And at No 10, Sports Personality of the Year nominee, Kevin Sinfield!”
Scottish had a brief flourish before Kev added to his growing points tally for Carnegie with a penalty after 4 minutes. It was then the turn of the home team to gain the ascendency with a Lydon penalty and a converted try following a missed tackle some 30 metres out. It took a further fifteen minutes for Carnegie to reply following a quickly taken tap penalty by Buzz led to a try for a rampaging Lee Imiolek. After Carnegie’s first rolling maul of the match, on 37 minutes, led to a penalty and a team warning to Scottish for “collapsing the maul” referee Thomas deemed the second attempt merited a penalty try and the sin-binning of a Scottish prop. It was noticeable as half-time approached that Kevin Sinfield’s influence on the game was growing even allowing for a couple of minor mishaps.
At the start of the second half Scottish came back strongly and a kick to touch by Jonah with his foot over the 22 metre line gave Scottish possession which they utilised to fashion a try for Mark Bright. Another noticeable feature of the game was Harry Leonard’s role at centre which seems to becoming something of a complement to the work of Kevin at fly-half. After a missed London Scottish penalty Chris Jones replaced Dean Schofield and at the ensuing line-out another rolling maul was successful in giving Andy Saull a try on his return from a lengthy injury layoff. There was still time for a Scottish fight-back and the try which brought them level came after Carnegie were pulled back, after kicking the ball out, for carrying the ball back into their own 22. The referee got this right although he had missed Scottish getting away with the same offence earlier in the match! The match ended with Carnegie completing a forwards “full-house” and another push over try, this time for Charlie Beech. Although Kevin’s conversion attempt hit the post and stayed out Carnegie management of the last few minutes of injury time was sufficient to get them over the finishing line with a five pointer.
Following last week’s impressive win at Scarborough, today was always going to be a more difficult exercise with Scottish turning out a stronger team, but a good all round performance saw the boys move clear at the top of group 3, a position they will maintain irrespective of the result of the Ospreys v Munster match on Sunday.
………….. to Heathrow, en-route to Belfast for one Kevin Sinfield! GOOD LUCK!!

Good to see our matches getting coverage but they seem to have a problem with identifying our players - this presumably must be Rob Burrows [sic].
The Scottish backs looked more assured in possession and we again looked to lack any ceativity.
The pluses, the forwards were strong and played for the full 80 minutes showing some neat touches and impressively soft hands, Neilsen again had a good game as did Imiolek, he does look impressive in loose play.
A good confidence boosting win, but all is not well in the backs.
