Leeds Carnegie lies fifth in the Championship and, as a result of four defeats on the trot, is in danger of slipping further down the table .  As the year draws to a close it is an appropriate time to take stock of where we are and where we are going. 2012 has been a difficult year for the club and that is putting it mildly.....

We are all still getting used to the new reality at Headingley (if we are lucky enough to play there). The union club has to be self-financing which means a smaller squad and no money for big names. The club have dropped it's "A" team and fringe players are now loaned out until needed.

The high points in 2012 were, for me, the demolition of Cornish Pirates at Headingley back in April and putting 50 points on Bristol in October. The latter included a near perfect first half which gave us a glimpse of what is possible with the current squad. I, for one, had reduced my expectations this season to a top four finish but not getting promoted. It was always going to be tough but, after the demolition of one of our rivals, I thought we would kick on and start to close the gap between us and the top four. We actually did that with a series of wins against mid & lower table sides but we were given a reality check when Bedford came to Otley  for our last "home" fixture.

Subsequent results saw us slip out of the top four as the big boys of Bristol finally got into their stride. If results go agaisnt us this week we will be stuck in mid-table with two tough fixtures ahead of us. I cannot believe that Bristol will roll over for us again and Newcastle will be a harder proposition than Bedford.

This all boils down to one conclusion. We must beat Plymouth this weekend. No matter how much roast dinner we all consume beforehand, a defeat will be most unpalatable. WE have enough talent in the squad to get a bonus point. Whether or not we can come up with a game plan that maximises the effect of that talent is down to DE. We live in hope.

Well written post, WW, but when I saw the title I was a bit worried!
Nice precis of the past year with clearly set-out expectations - so no pressure on DE then?

I think it is imperative we win well this week, a bonus point should not be too much to ask. There is another (frustrating), two week break from league fixtures after Sunday, but it would be good to go into that holding 4th place in the league, and with a bit of a cushion over the teams immediately below us.
The next league game is at Bristol, and if we were still above them after that game, we would have the chance of a top four finish entirely in our own hands.
No sentiment from DE this week please, a team selected who will deliver the goods.

COME ON LEEDS.
We've been through it all together.
