When I was a little girl I was scared to death of the Indians in those black and white westerns they used to show on the telly. The ‘woo-woo-woo’ sounds of the Indians scared me even more. So the first time I heard the Tomahawk chop song from the supporters of Exeter Chiefs I wanted to go and hide behind the sofa like I did years ago
The Exeter Chiefs’ pack is a frightening prospect in itself – it’s immense. When I first saw them in last season’s championship play-offs I was impressed with the demolition job they did over Bristol (OK, so Bris self-imploded somewhat). I’ve been relishing the prospect of watching them play in the flesh all season. What I’ve seen on TV (now in colour and in digital quality!) has done nothing to diminish my expectations.
The team of no ‘super stars’, albeit with a brilliant team spirit and work ethic, massive favourites for the drop at the beginning of the season, has put in solid performances over the campaign and, until recently, made Sandy Park a fortress and have claimed some notable scalps. Out on the road, they’ve not had it so good but, only last month, they came away with the spoils at Kingston Park. And like Newcastle Falcons, Exeter Chiefs have their own goal kicking metronome in Gareth Steenson.
So what about Leeds? Recent performances have had die-hard fans cursing a bit of bad luck and praising a ‘great attitude from the boys’. But this does not win games. Having more points on the board than your opposition is what is needed. The question is, do Leeds have the tools in the kit bag to get a much needed four points? Although we are not seeing the right results, supporters from all the AP teams are praising our performances, saying they belie our lowly position. So it seems that the tools are there – getting them to deliver a maximum performance for 80 minutes is what is needed. And that takes courage – but we all know that fortune favours the brave. Cutting out the unforced errors and stopping the knock-ons will add a few more feathers to Leeds’ bow.
But what team to deliver that performance? I think the intended starting line up against Sale is a good place to start. If Captain Fantastic is still unfit, we have an equally fantastic big chief in the shape of Steve Thompson who came back from England duty last week to lead from the front. And he’s not scared of having a pow-wow with the officials (even if it did result in a penalty overturned last week). Michael Stephenson has been helping himself to tries in the last few outings and, interestingly, both tries last week came from the backs. Adrian ‘Have A Go’ Jarvis does not seem to lose confidence from his misses – but with the aforementioned Steenson having a high conversation rate, AJ does need to be on-form on Sunday. However, being at home and a local knowledge of the sticks and conditions will help his performance. As we’ve seen with Newcastle and Sale I think the match will come down to the percentage of kicks flying between the posts.
Leeds need a 16th man (or woman) out there – we supporters have to become involved. Just like we did for the Irish game – but not waiting for an ironic cheer when Mr Wigglesworth finally makes a decision in our favour. And I don’t want anyone to start with the, “I’ll start backing the team when they start to play their hearts out” nonsense – start to play your part and make a difference from when the team emerges from the tunnel.
Going back to those Indians – I think this song is rather apt.
Three wheels on my wagon,
And I’m still rolling along.
The Championship is calling me,
Points fly, right on by
But I’m singing a happy song.
I’m singing a higgity, haggity, hoggety, high
Carnegies, they never say die.
A mile up the road there’s a hidden cave
And we can watch those Exeter Chiefs
Go galloping by.

We have picked a side to do a job at HC on Sunday. Rob Baxter has commented on the narrowing of the pitch and countered this by picking our two giant Islanders to patrol the wings and brought back the substantially sized Brian Rennie at inside centre. The pack weighs over 900 kgs so it looks as if we are intending to deprive you of the ball and then bulldoze you when we are in possession. Doesn't sound as if it is going to be spectacular other than in the size of the collisions.

Will it really?. I just drove up from Bristol and passed just one small mini bus with a Chiefs sticker and saw no cars. You are going to have to make a lot of noise - got a megaphone?![]()
Just passed the team bus on the Armley gyratory - those boys will aching from that long drive. I know I am and I did 70 miles less.
