The fact that we stayed in touch for most of the game owed much to hard work in adversity and let’s be honest, plenty of basic errors by the opposition. As Piers so succinctly put it on the messageboard, “we were mullered” up front.

For the coaching staff looking for players to stick their hands up and force their way into the first team squad, there were few positive signs. But Sean Marsden was bright, showing a smart turn of pace for a brace of tries, Mark Denney made a few telling breaks in midfield and Brian Lima was as dynamic as you’d expect, though the Lima "handoff" made another appearance today and perhaps Brian was a little lucky to avoid censure. And late on, when Manu Contepomi was in the bin, Danny Gray seemed to inject urgency when he switched to outside half. Geraint Lewis rarely disappoints and up front he was at the heart of the few incursions.

As Craig Short was honest enough to admit at the final whistle, we didn’t have enough in the way of creativity and ideas today. The coaching staff will hope that the experience will be a chastening one and when the A league fixtures start again (Quins at home on Feb 13th scheduled next) they will lift their game and force their claims.
