Sixth international goal

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans was on the scoresheet - but his goal wasn't enough for Northern Ireland, whose Euro 2024 qualification hopes have been left in tatters after a 4-2 defeat in Slovenia.

The Ulstermen have picked up just three points from five European qualification matches so far - and now look certain to miss out on major tournament football once again, despite 24 nations now qualifying for the quadrennial continental showpeice.

Andraz Sporar opened the scoring for the hosts, before Isaac Price restored parity with only seven minutes on the clock. Evans then deflected a Petar Stojanovic into his own net, before Benjamin Sesko doubled the Slovenian advantage before the interval with a stylish low drive.

Evans showed stunning footwork to reduce the deficit on 53 minutes - as he skilfully controlled the ball, eluded a defender and floated a lovely finish home, but Slovenia restored their two-goal lead just moments late as Sporar struck again.

Northern Ireland enjoyed more possession, more attempts and more corners - but couldn't make it count.

The game marked Evans' 102nd cap for his country, and his sixth international goal. He recently signed a one-year contract with Manchester United after leaving relegated Leicester City and impressing Erik ten Hag during pre-season.
