As the last echoes of "Come On You Bath" fade after one of the most memorable nights at the Rec when the Bath squad, supported by a packed house in full voice, took a huge step forward in this year's quest for the biggest prize in European rugby, it's now time to shift the focus back onto the big domestic prize. Defending the title as Prem champions has challenged the best of teams over the years and we're going to need every bit of the spirit and "dog" that we showed on Friday night in all of the remaining games if we're going to achieve what only Wasps, Leicester and Saracens have managed to do since the Finals were introduce in 2002-03. And it starts with the visit of Harlequins this Saturday.
Last Friday's game and the atmosphere at the Rec was on another level. Even those of us with decades of games to look back on would be hard pressed to recall one that matched it. With both teams bringing their "A" game and going at it with an intensity that was genuinely test match level at times it produced a roller coaster of emotions for both sets of supporters. Truly great performance, boys, but coming hard on the heels of the Saracens game, it might be good for us as supporters to have a match where we don't go through the full emotional wringer. "Never too high, never too low" is a difficult mantra to follow sometimes!
"You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quins" is a refrain that rings around the Stoop as they sing their version of Manfred Mann's rendition of Bob Dylan's words. Putting the double negative to one side, it does seem to sum up Harlequins' season so far. We really haven’t seen anything, or at least not much, of the "mighty Quins" that we're used to. Yes, they've impressed on occasions, notably spoiling Bristol's "Big Day Out" in Cardiff in the last round of the Prem, but they haven’t so far been able to string together the run of consistent performances that their squad should be capable of. Does that sound familiar? In many ways it was our story a few short seasons ago.
Quins are currently 9th in the Prem table on 15 points, one point behind Gloucester and within striking distance of Sale in 7th on 22. Realistically, the best Quins can now aim for is finishing in 8th or above and qualifying for next year's Champions Cup. But in a sense their position in the table gives them a certain freedom to play an uninhibited brand of rugby. They are a proud club with a long history and they will want to finish the season having given their supporters something to cheer about and all that makes them a dangerous potential banana skin on our path to a home semi-final in the Prem. So what do we do about squad selection for this game?
The calculation got even more difficult this afternoon after Bordeaux Bègles booked a home semi-final. Throw the Northampton match on 25th April into the mix and you need access to a supercomputer to work out the best options, or of course JvG's analytical brain and notebook! Much has been made of the depth of the Bath Squad and I think JvG will need to draw on all of it to get the right selections for each of these games. Of course, using the wider squad takes on a different complexion when you think about players like Messrs Frost, Richards, Bayliss, Staddon, Carr-Smith, Ojomoh, Butt and Cokanasiga to name a few, but fighting on two fronts at this stage of the season will not be easy.
We're going into this phase of the Prem on the same number of points that we had at this time last season, but the competition for the top 4 places is much closer than it was last year. With that in mind, I think we need to try to bank 5 points against Quins this weekend. There will be some rotation but I think we have to go strong. Players like the ones that I mentioned above who didn't feature on Friday give us the opportunity to make some changes without significantly weakening the matchday 23. That said, the front row is a worry, especially if Beno is carrying an injury. The compromise will be in team selection for the Saints game on the 25th, balancing the need to ensure that the players who are likely to face Bordeaux are match ready against the risk of injury in key positions.
So here we go, with two prizes to aim for. It's arguably a challenge way above even the campaign last year leading to the Treble. We can't let the Bordeaux game completely impact on our progress in the Prem. I'm sure JvG will be applying the "start again from zero" mantra this week in training and preparation and if we approach Saturday's game against Quins with the right focus, I'm sure we'll secure the win and look then forward to meeting the huge challenges that Northampton and then Bordeaux will present.

Ahhh……maybe? I had written him off as not ready this season.
Agree that a return before then would be a big boost.

If Jaco was available in the run in it would be transformative to our bench.

My concern is that he is getting chances in a rotated pack with players that aren't as strong in the scrum, so he is getting little support from behind him. What would really give him confidence / the greatest opportunity to hold his own is being a THP in a 1st choice pack. I get the obvious problems with that at this stage of the season...

Gosh. I remember when we used to release injury updates like that. Feel for them.

Not saying he definitely won’t but has JvG ever gone for significant rotation for a ‘live’ home league game? Assume Kirk comes in this week and might one or two fringe players in the squad but I would still guess a version of full strength gets run out this week. Personally hope that means a start for Hill

It's slightly cynical and not ideal for the Prem, but I would go fairly full-strength against Quins and no-strength against Saints - that appears to me to be the nailed-on route to get 5, hopefully 6, points from those 2 games, and means the run-on XV vs Bordeaux gets a 2-week run-in to the semi-final - 1 week resting up a bit, 1 week of full-bore training.

Yeah do expect jvg to go for fairly minimal rotation but we do have good options all over the place.
Interesting about their prop issues, makes giving tdt a rest an interesting option.
Would you play hill at lock or 6?

I usually don't speculate on squad selection, I trust JVG to do that but if Beno and Sam are out aside from them I would favour a pretty much unchanged squad against Quins. Imho I would start strong and stamp our authority early. For Saints away I would rest all those expected to play against UBB and not give Saints the kudos of beating a full Bath squad. The subsequent gloating would be unbearable. Mentally any points gained against Saints would be a bonus and a loss would not be season defining. We are obvious underdogs against UBB but regardless of that result the Exeter away game becomes a must win game imho, a win there would make it easier to manage the squad for the final 3 Prem games so that we come first or second. Getting ahead of myself but really want to avoid Saints in a semi final.

Having seen the myriad of suggestions as to team selection I’m relieved we can rely on JvG making the right choice.

Feels like a game where Kirk, Moloney, Bernard vDL, Hennessy, and Green should get a start in - no disrespect to Quins but a home game against a team so depleted gives us more options with regards to bringing in players

Always got the feeling he was underrated in England - not so in New Zealand and South Africa though.
All the best wishes to him and his family.

Sad news Joe Launchbury to retire at end of the season.
Is it sad? He is 35 he can't play in the Prem for ever. He has had a long and succesful career, including 70 England caps and gets to retire on his own terms. Doesn't get much better than that.
Quote:Nothing compared to the Quins injury situation. Are they going to need to bring in players or do they have enough in the wider squad/academy to field a match day team?theredseat
From the injury update: no Underhill and most likely no Obano or Roux this week. Biggest news is that Donoghue is fit and available. Hopefully get to see him back on the field for Saints if not this week
Quote:Charlieboa1
Agree with all that nid
Ollie is a top end but has never hit form this season- agree bathrob that it's a close call who to start with ar centre in the big games.
I maybe edge towards ollie for the BB game for his extra physicality.
I think next season hennessey will also be pressing very hard - big, quick, clever.... lots to like.
Quote:Barfboy
Think JvG's comments in the injury update - twinned with Quins' injury list - mean there will be a fair bit of rotation.
Reckon we'll see Santi at 10 given he's basically talking about Finn (bar Enya game). Pepper and Spenny surely get the week off too.

Quote:Bath Hammer
So, are we resting no one, allowing for a few injuries?
Quote:shipwrecked
Quins may have injuries but that is still a strong Quins side not to be underestimated.
Quote:Rawce
After Griffin took a bit of a pasting against Sale(?), surely this is the ideal game to give him back some confidence? I guess Saints know we won't be trying to take them on with our usual squad/tactics at their turf next week.

If we're working on the basis that the TH pecking order is now 1. TdT 2. Sela 3. Griffin
Quote:P G Tips
I've just refreshed my memory of our Round 1 encounter with Quins at the Stoop.A high-scoring affair (31-47). 5 of our tries were from forwards (4 front rowers), all, including the 2 from Arundell were from close range.
Quins found a lot of gaps - especially early on-to open our defence.
It may of course be different this time, but we will need to be tight and dominant until the forward bomb squad comes on.

Is Sela ahead of Griffin right here, right now? It appears he will be pretty soon, but Griffin has built up some solid experience this year that could leave him edging it for a big game tomorrow?

Quote:And Smith could run circles around Big Joe 😬Lankyman
Smith at fullback and big Joe on the wing reminds me of a “ rag doll “ match when the great Phil Bennett played at full back for Llanelli . Could have been a great plan if it wasn’t for Derek Wyatt on the wing for Bath, he barely broke stride as he ran over Bennet and went through to score .

Sometimes I read these threads and thing you Bath fans can be a touch arrogant! Then I read this one and the opposite is true! Quins have been awful this year, they even lost to Glaws! You will win and I imagine with a very big margin! I think your prem cup side would beat them.

Felt bad for Arundell, didn't see the ball all game, moved to fullback, ball immediately goes to his previous wing for Bayliss to run down it and score.

Perhaps I am expecting too much but I thought our young props struggled against their 3rd/4th choice opposite numbers. The contrast when our bomb squad came on was huge but we”ll have neither of them next season & no Stewart until Christmas, just Bhatti. I fear that won’t be enough.

From memory, I think it was one penalty for each team when the starting props were on and the scrums looked pretty stable. We certainly weren't dominate for that period but I dont think we really struggled either.
The difference TDT and FVW made was ridiculous.

Can’t see Max or Ollie playing next week and Max’s injury did look quite serious. Such a shame to get significant injuries in a game lacking any intensity.

Regarding Blancmange, I wonder whether Newcastle, Gloucester and Harlequins would have made more of an effort had there been some jeopardy for them. I'm not looking forward to more such games.

A flat performance and atmosphere, but both were accentuated after the high of last week.
Much of the crowd in front of me could stay in their seat for constant trips to the bar/loo with some people going multiple times per half. I know the club needs the revenue but it sure disputes the viewing of the match.

Just bad manners. I wouldn’t dream of accessing / egressing my seat without there being a break in play (as I was taught to as a child).

At the old Ellis Park (Johannesburg) - the stadium with once the world record for capacity & attendance- the beer would come to the spectator - in tinnies. Regular, constant drinking was normal but obscuring other spectators’ view while leaving for the loo was definirely not on and usually resulted in the offender being pelted with naatjies (tangerines) or even empty timnies.
There was definitely an etiquette, however rough, about behaviour as a spectator.
