Camberley: 36 - 0 Harlequin Ladies
By Mel Antao September 28 2005
After the short journey down to leafy Surrey, it was to be a disappointing afternoon for the Harlequin Ladies last Sunday (25th September), as Camberley dominated in the set-pieces and made the most of their pace out wide to secure a 36-0 victory.
Harlequins made a slow start to the game, where a couple of missed tackles resulted in two breakaway tries through the midfield. Quins were lucky not to be reduced to 14 players in the first half, when an accidental clothes-line tackle by full back Kate Sinfield on the Camberley winger resulted in just a caution (he'd forgotten his cards!) from the referee.

Although Camberley tried to kick their way into a better position, Quins pinned them in their half of the pitch for the remainder of the first half. The home side dominated the scrums and Quins were unable to create a platform to work off. Camberley then capitalised on their possession and used their speed in the backs to create the overlap needed to score out wide twice more.

The second half started well with Harlequins camped in the Camberley twenty-two and despite numerous phases of good attacking play around the pockets of the ruck, they were unable to get the ball out wide to score. Camberley continued to dominate the scrums, where they stole the ball against the head on numerous occasions. The Ladies defensive line held firm, before Camberley took play out wide for their subsequent try.

Despite the scoreline, Quins heads never went down during any point in the game. They continued to dig deep and challenge bravely for the remaining 20 minutes. Camberley scored just once more and prevented the visitors from creating any opportunities from the little possession they had from set-pieces.

Whilst disappointed to come away with a loss, Harlequins can draw on their positive work in defence as they prepare for their next league game at home to Ipswich on Saturday (1st October 2005). The Ladies will be playing after NEC Harlequins game against Doncaster in National Division One at the Twickenham Stoop. The Ladies will kick-off at 5.00pm.
