This opportunity came about as the Amateurs demolished a determined Kilburn side in their penultimate match with another hat-trick of tries from winger Matt Williams.
Quins Amateurs came into the game focussed on the task ahead but wary of being too anxious to finish the job off too quickly. However in the first fifteen minutes they sometimes appeared far too casual and allowed Kilburn to match them toe to toe.
A penalty from skipper Ross Webster put Quins on the scoreboard after six minutes, only for Kilburn to reply with a successful penalty themselves after twelve minutes. This had the effect of stirring Quins into action. Minutes later open-side flanker Luke Senior stole the opposition ball from a line-out in their 22, evaded a tackle and slipped the ball to prop John Fairweather in close support who barrelled his way over the line. Webster converted to give Quins a 3 - 10 lead.

Thompson soars in the lineout
Ten minutes of Quins pressure, mostly in the Kilburn half of the pitch ensued at which point flanker Phil Thompson emerged from a maul with the ball and proceeded to charge 35 metres down the right wing and touch down unchallenged. Webster converted, and then added two further penalties in quick succession to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
On the stroke of half-time Williams scored the first of his hat-trick of tries after prop Lucien Roberts made a strong run up the middle of the park to nudge the Amateurs into a healthy score of 3 – 28 at the turn.
Quins quickly got back into their stride in the second half. Hooker Dan Camacho, later voted as Man of the Match, finished off a driving maul from 15 metres out touching down Quins fourth try, which Webster converted.
At 3 – 33, Quins eased off a little until Williams scored his second try, converted by Webster, following a lovely sweeping move which saw the backs’ handling and support play executed superbly.
And then Quins switched off momentarily as Kilburn launched a series of attacks from their backs, which culminated in a consolation try after some poor tackling from Quins’ three-quarters, which was an embarrassment to Quins but testament to Kilburn’s tireless efforts

The Quins backs then did everything they could to redeem themselves by chasing a lot of well-placed kicks behind the opposition defence or slicing through their centres. Kilburn for their part harried and chased all afternoon, their No. 8 making a try-saving tackle after Williams was caught and Adam Wallace fumbled the ball in the offload. But Williams had the last word in the game by cutting loose and rounding the opposition back line on the right wing to score his third and Harlequins’ sixth try of the day, for the Quins Amateurs to run out easy winners by 8 – 47.
Harlequins Amateurs’ last league match to secure the Championship will be played on April 9th at Brunel University ground, Wood Lane, Isleworth alongside the A4, kick-off at 2.30. The club would love to welcome any supporters who wish to attend.
