Quins received the kick-off but were unable to gain much territory before possession was turned over. In what turned out to be a scrappy first half, both teams struggled with ball retention thanks to countless handling errors and penalties. It was London Welsh that were able to make good use of the possession they did have and break through a disorganised Quins defence to score.
Quins attempted to fight back but London Welsh challenged hard at the breakdowns, making it difficult for them to get clean ball. Harlequins tried to use their kicking game to gain a better field position, but Welsh’s full-back guarded well and ran the ball straight back at the home team. Welsh continued to make the most of Harlequins’ errors to extend their lead to 0 – 19 by half time.
The second half saw a more determined attack and a better organised defence from Quins, but Welsh defended well, keeping Quins well away from the line and ensuring a clean sheet for themelves.
Two crucial league fixtures remain, and Quins will need to find their form quickly if they are to keep their place in Division 1 South-East.
