Harlequin Amateurs beat London French
By Hillary Carr March 3 2005
After the last meeting between the teams which sometimes resembled a cross between a boxing match and a battlefield, nerves were stretched before the game.
Harlequins took a long time to find their rhythm in the first half, and with the dismissal of the French flanker at the end of the first half, the fortunes then favoured Quins who ran out easy winners.

Quins had an early opportunity to take the lead after nine minutes but Ross Webster was wayward with the penalty kick from about 45 yards. Soon after Quins made amends when Adam Wallace repeated his recent devastating move to scythe through the French defensive back line to score under the posts. Webster converted to give Quins a 7-0 lead which they then increased to 10-0 after 19 minutes following Webster’s successful penalty attempt.

London French maintained all the pressure in the first quarter allowing the Amateurs scant use of the ball. However, their only reward for all the territory and position was three points from a penalty converted five minutes before the break. Then the game took a decisive turn when Giovanni Massimo the former Italian international was sent off for foul play.

The second half saw Quins step up a considerable number of gears and into their stride. Ah-Sun came on in the middle of the back line and immediately made his mark by collecting the ball and breaking the defence and the try line. Webster again converted. Russ Wigginton at scrum half then put Adam Wallace away down the blind side from a scrum on half way. With the line in sight there was no stopping him. Webster continued his run of successful conversions.

And it was Wallace again who added his third try following a backs move that saw him determinedly make the try line from 25 metres out following slick passing along the line, with an overlap in Quins’ favour. Again Webster found the mark with the conversion.

The last try was secured by Ah-Sun following a well judged cross-field kick into the corner to complete the scoring at 36-3. But proceedings were soured when Andy Lawrence was shown the red card just before the final whistle for allegedly punching an opponent.

The Amateurs’ weekend was made complete however when they saw that promotion rivals Old Abbotstonians had been surprisingly beaten by St. Nicholas Old Boys, whilst Uxbridge had been held to a draw by Old Isleworthians.
