Quintin 5 Harlequin Amateurs 55
By Hillary Carr March 3 2005
Harlequin Amateurs, intent on promotion this year, were in buoyant mood to keep the pressure on at the top of the league table. Whilst we still occupy the top position, Old Abbotstonians have a game in hand over us. So a ‘must win’ result would keep the pressure on our fellow rivals.
From the kick off, it was Quintin who took the game to Quins, constantly shoving Quins off the ball at every opportunity with the heavier pack. Their game plan was simple enough, to prevent every attempt by Quins to release the ball to their backs; this did pretty successfully until 10 minutes into the game when Ross Webster sent a miss- move to the flying Adam Wallace coming in from full back who dissected the opponent’s defence to score under the posts, Webster then converted.

From the restart Quintin again had the Quins scrum on the back foot, rucking and mauling them off the paddock at every opportunity. After a long spell in the Quins 22, Quintin scored what was to be their only points of the game from a driving maul Quintin's delight was there to be witnessed by all; one would have thought they had won the World Cup.

A stern word from skipper Webster during Quintin's failed conversion attempt seemed to have the desired effect, when from the restart, Quins forwards decided to enter the game and mounted a series of attacks with good support play from the back row of Phil Thompson, Nick Farrant and Nick Glanville, which resulted in two tries in the 26th and 37th minutes by Ben Fretwell and Jamie Eaton, both converted by Webster. At half-time, Harlequins led 5 – 21.

From the start of the second half, the Quins pack had sorted out the scrum and for the most part had complete control of the game with further tries from Farrant, Thompson, Lawrence (well-deserved after a number of storming runs at the opposition), Wallace and two from Greg Birbeck.

To Quintin's credit, they never gave up the chase, particularly as their season has been an arduous one at the foot of the league table and they have rallied their troops throughout a very difficult season. Congratulations to them for such great team spirit.
