Everyone knew the importance of getting our campaign back on the rails to aim to win the league, (or as may now be the likely outcome, win promotion via the play-offs at the end of season). Whilst Belsize Park had been beaten twice before in league and cup matches they themselves had beaten Uxbridge the previous weekend, who were occupying third place in the league. So the outcome was by no means a foregone conclusion. And these guys looked big…!
The game was, as expected, nip and tuck for the first 30 minutes, both teams having equal share of the possession, but Belsize Park having the territorial advantage.
The stalemate was broken when the captain Ross Webster slotted home a penalty after 34 minutes. From this point Quins started to enjoy more fluid possession and on the stroke of half time winger Adam Wallace was put away to score the first try, converted by Webster to send the home side in 10-0 up at the break.
The second half was a case of one-way traffic after full-back Phil Ah-Sun scythed through the Park defence in a superb switch move to score Quins’ second try from the kick-off. Webster again converted. The score demoralised Belsize Park who tried vainly to regroup in the face of an attacking onslaught from the Quins.
The backs tackled strongly and put up a rock solid defence. From a set scrum on the right Greg Birbeck successfully worked another switch move in the centres to advance the scoreboard, his try being converted by Webster.
The Quins back row of flankers Luke Senior, Nick Farrant and No. 8 Phil Thompson pummelled and dispossessed the opposition and continually set the Quins’ backs in motion. The forwards were also by now dominant in all phases of play, with Thompson and James Dewar winning clean ball and spoiling the opposition’s lineout whilst the forwards made good use of the rolling maul on several occasions.
It was just desserts therefore that a forward, James Dewar should score the next try for Quins following a penalty in the Park 22. Webster converted.
Birbeck rounded off the afternoon with a last minute try in the left hand corner picking up from the back of a ruck to dart the 15 metres to the line for a hugely satisfying 36-0 win.
