Quins made a strong start from Blackheath’s kick-off, tackling well and quickly turning over possession. Within minutes, Tanya Lee, at outside-centre, made a break and sprinted from well within Harlequins’ twenty-two towards the Blackheath try-line. The scattered Blackheath defence gave chase, but Lee’s pace gave Quins the opening score.
Blackheath soon retaliated, using inside runners to draw in the Quins defence, before their quick hands took the ball out wide for their first try. Despite their strong start, Quins now seemed to lose their focus, and Blackheath were to run in four more tries before the half-time whistle.
The second half opened with Blackheath conceding several penalties, but Quins were unable to hold on to possession for long enough to put Blackheath under any pressure. Blackheath kicked very well for territory and ran in four more tries.
The final twenty minutes saw Quins regain their focus and begin to challenge the Blackheath defence. The visitors patiently worked their way down the pitch, and when Blackheath gave away a further penalty in their own twenty-two, it was second row, Jean Bergesen, who played quick ball and ran through for the second try.
Although the game was to finish with Quins once again in a defensive position, there were many positives for them to take from the game. With several weeks until their next league fixture, there will be plenty for Quins to work on in preparation for Folkestone away on the 20th February.
