Old Isleworthians have not had a great season to date but even they must have been surprised by the ferocity with which Quins attacked their defences relentlessly. Winger matt Williams opened the scoring after just 7 minutes taking the ball on the left hand side of the pitch and scoring in the right hand corner.
Thios was quickly followed by prop John Fairweather crashing over the line frm short range after excellent work by tom Curry to win opposition ball in the lineout, a task he and fellow lock Phil Thompson relished all afternoon. Webster converted for Quins to be 12 points in the lead within the same number of minutes.
Winger Adam Wallace was late arriving because of the heavy Twickenham traffic, but he lost no time at all in scoring the next try within 10 seconds of coming onto the field, also converted by Webster.
Quins’ strategy of penetrating through the middle of the park with the forwards to tie in the defence was working extremely well, with no. 8 Stevens picking up from the back of the set scrum and the rolling maul being put to good effect to gain significant yardage into OI territory. But the Amateurs lost their way a little for a passage of ten minutes before rallying to score their fourth try on the stroke of half time when Thompson cut a swathe through the opposition defence from 20 metres, again converted by Webster for a 26-0 lead at half time.
The scoring in the second half was equally prolific, beginning with Matt Stevens scoring a try after only 4 minutes from a tap penalty 15 metres out.
Adam Wallace then proceeded to run in a hat-trick of tries in the second half, joined by Webster on the list of try scorers, whose goal kicking was near-perfect all afternoon bar one attempt. Wallace’s second try of the three was a perfectly timed run taking a supporting pass from Ben Fretwell and breaking down the touchline leaving OI players flailing in his wake vainly trying to arrest his progress.
In conclusion, a convincing victory carved out of doing the simple things well which will have re-inspired a lot of confidence within the team. Still niggling problems to address in trying to concede fewer penalties, commonly at the breakdown, but this was a good outing for the Amateurs by again, failing to concede a point! 61-0.
