With the league result settled, both teams were keen to play a ten-a-side friendly rather than have a second week without a game.
Quins kicked off and Medway attacked well, testing the Harlequins’ defensive line. It was Medway who opened the scoring, taking the ball out-wide to run around the outside. Quins drew level just minutes later, when scrum-half, Donna Tracey, picked up from the base of the scrum, then ran in support and carried the ball over the line.
Harlequins were to score again before the first of two breaks, with centre, Tanya Lee, taking the ball out wide and sprinting for the try line.
The next fifteen minutes saw Harlequins dominate the game, with three tries in quick succession: a second try each from Tracey and Lee, and one from Amy Gibbons at fly-half, breaking through the middle with a powerful run.
Medway then came back into the game, tackling hard and stealing possession at the breakdowns. Two tries followed for the home team before the final break, and Quins needed to raise their game if they were to hold on to their lead.
The final minutes of the game saw one try apiece, with Quins holding on to their lead. After several consecutive losses in recent weeks, this victory was much needed psychologically for Harlequins. However, with league contenders, Hove, to face at home next week, the winning feeling may be somewhat short-lived.
