Harlequin Ladies 10 – Folkestone 41
By Jo Everett November 2 2004
Despite a determined team-effort on Sunday afternoon, the Harlequin Ladies suffered their second defeat in two weeks. After receiving the kick-off, Quins worked their way into Folkestone’s half, but once possession was lost, the Folkestone centres were quick to punch holes in Harlequins’ defence.
Quins raised their game, and began to put pressure on the visitors, but Folkestone retaliated with two further tries, thanks to the powerful running of their number 8. Harlequins refused to let their heads drop, and forced Folkestone into a more defensive game. It was when Vicky Gallagher’s number 8 pick-up from the base of the scrum set up a driving maul, that prop, Tanya Wilson, was able to drive through and open the scoring for Quins.

Harlequins scored again shortly after, this time thanks to the pace and handling skills of the backs. It was winger, Tanya Lee, who cut back inside and held off the Folkestone defence to secure the points.

Although Folkestone were to score two more tries before half time, Quins were now challenging well and beginning to exert some pressure on the visitors. Quins built on this in the second half, allowing Folkestone to cross the line just once more. Harlequins made much better use of their possession in this half, coming close to scoring on several occasions, but held out each time by the strong Folkestone defence and their well-placed kicks.

Although disappointed by a second consecutive defeat on their home ground, the Harlequins had certainly improved their game after last week’s heavy defeat by Blackheath. They now need to build from this ready to continue their league campaign away to Ipswich in two weeks.
