Convincing Win at the Stoop for The Ladies
By Jo Everett October 18 2004
Saturday saw the Harlequin Ladies rise to the occasion with a convincing win in their game at the Stoop, writes Jo Everett. (Harlequin Ladies 25 - Romford Ravens 0)

Previous games this season have seen the Quins Ladies take their time to settle into the game, but on Saturday they launched a strong attack from kick off. With Romford pinned in their own half, it was a matter of minutes before Quins opened the scoring, with Amy Smith, at hooker, powering through for the first of her two tries.

Harlequins kept up the pressure, and were soon awarded a penalty just ten metres out. Quins used their catch-and-drive to force Romford onto the back foot, and create the space for fly-half Amy Gibbons to break through.

Romford raised their game and tightened up their defensive line, but Quins were to score once more in the first half, with number 8, Vicky Gallagher securing the points from a driving maul.

The second half saw a stronger defensive line from Romford, and a lapse in the Quins attack. Romford made the most of this and began to work their way down the pitch. Quins used their kicking game to keep Romford away from the line, and were soon back on the offensive. Smith scored her second with a powerful run down the blind-side, and winger, Lauren Cooper, scored her debut try for in the final minutes of the game, when quick hands kept the ball out of contact just metres from the line.

The Quins Ladies can be proud of Saturday‚s performance, against a team that consistently challenge well at the breakdowns. However, Quins will need to raise their game further as they continue their league campaign, at home to Blackheath on Sunday.
