On receiving the kick-off, Quins quickly worked their way into Wimbledon's half and held them there for the first quarter of the game. However, with Wimbledon's pack putting the Quins forwards under pressure in the scrums and the breakdowns, Quins struggled to secure clean ball.
The Harlequin backs made the best of the opportunities that did come their way, and with scrum-half, Donna Tracey delivering a perfectly timed pass, it was finished off with a great run by Gibbons at fly-half. Gibbons followed up with the conversion that would prove crucial in the final score.
Wimbledon launched a strong counter-attack, which now saw the Harlequins pinned deep in their own half. The Quins defence held out, and as half time approached, Harlequins were again working their way down the field.
The second half saw a similar picture, with Wimbledon challenging hard at the rucks, but Quins managing to maintain a good field position. When Quins let their concentration slip, Wimbledon took their chance, using quick hands to create the gap they needed to run through and score. With the wind against the kicker, the conversion was missed.
The final quarter saw a string of needless penalties conceded by Quins. The visitors kept their heads and once again looked close to scoring before the final whistle blew.
Whilst pleased to come away with the win, Quins have a lot to work on in preparation for their next league fixture, at home against Blackheath on 24th October. Facing the strength of the Romford forwards in this Saturday‚s friendly at The Stoop, should provide exactly the challenge needed.
