A sizzling start for Quins Amateurs
By H Carr September 8 2004
The temperature was sizzling hot and, as it turned out, so was the display of rugby from the Harlequins Amateurs in their first outing of the season in the Powergen Vase away to Northolt last Saturday (4th September). Quins Amateurs 72 - 0 Northolt.
The match started very evenly, as both sides tested each other’s pack. Northolt fielded some very large players up front whilst the Quins forwards were dynamic and obviously fitter as the first half progressed.

With Coyle at scrum half constantly harrying his opposite number, it was simply a matter of time before turnover ball was converted into points and after 11 minutes Webster at fly half jinked through the opposition defence to score close to the posts, which he converted himself.

Following sustained pressure in the Northolt twenty-two, Farrant darted round from the blindside to take Coyle’s pass and feed Williams to run in try number two. As the game progressed, the heat combined with both the tactical and fitness advantage of Quins started to sap the strength of the Northolt players.

Dewar and Curry at lock were rampant throughout and the back row, notably Thompson and Kurdi, were an ever-present threat to the opposition. Dewar himself went over for the third try, after taking the ball from their drop out and winning the race to the line.

Thompson was the next to add to Quins scoreline with a try in the corner after Fairweather threw him a quick ball at the lineout. Fairweather himself scored next, converted by Webster, which saw Quins go into half-time with a comfortable 29–0 lead.

As soon as the second half started, all motivation and spirit seemed to vanish from Northolt as Quins ran in one try after another. Williams helped himself to two tries in succession to secure his hat-trick, before Curry got in on the act by supporting a storming charge up the middle and taking the final pass to cross the line.

Dewar was next on the receiving end of a scoring pass after the backs, who were in devastating form, had circumvented the flanks of the Northolt defence. Webster went over and then converted his second try as Quins returned the ball to the Northolt goal line straight from the restart.

O’Reilly kept the scoreboard busy following another break by the back division, before Thompson ended the rout in the final minute with another converted try to close the Quins account with a haul of 72 unanswered points.

Quins superior fitness and tactical ability told in this match, but Northolt are a division below the Amateurs and Quins will face a greater test of their capabilities this Saturday (11th September) when they undertake their first Herts & Middlesex League 2 South match against Kilburn Cosmos at home. However, on this display all bodes well for the season ahead.
