Quins come fourth in Compass International 7s
By Andy Hancock August 12 2004
The Compass Group Sevens tournament was held at the Stoop last Friday and Saturday, here is a brief summing up of how the Quins fared.
First up were Starba Orange who gave us a good run for our money, we played poorly in this match but Simon Keogh ran in an excellent hat trick to save our blushes. A narrow win 31-21.

Next were Public School Wanderers who we beat at a canter 26-7. We certainly tackled a lot better than we did in the first game. Nice to see Joe Mbu score his first try in Quins colours.

Our last match of the day was against Fiji Samurai who looked very good in a previous match I had watched and I must admit to being somewhat surprised when we beat them 19-0. This was a very impressive performance from Quins we were now playing with a lot of confidence.

After a shaky start we ended the day top of our group.

So to day 2 and a quarter final clash with Northampton Saints. Again I was a little surprised at the score line as Saints had performed well in their previous matches and I thought this would go down to the wire but we controlled the game and never looked like losing. 21-7 to Quins.

The entertainment during a brief break was provided by the kids who had been on O2 Rugby Class coaching courses. They met before their pitch debut for a final coaching session in the park at the back of the Stoop under the watchful eye of Prince Harry. He joined the coaches and kids in some skills practice and took part in a game of Rugby Quidditch. Apparently he was given the position of bludger and my two lads thought he played this well. (You would have to have read Harry Potter to understand all the positions, but the kids knew what they were doing).

OK time for the bubble to burst as we came up against Glos in the Semis.

We had suffered a few injuries in the previous matches and the team had changed shape a bit but even a fully fit Quins would still have struggled against an excellent Gloucester team. Glos won the match 33-14 and Quins can have no complaints about the result.

The injury reduced Quins side then played Fiji Samurai in the 3rd/4th play off and ended up losing but there was some good 7s on display again.

All the Quins team performed well, I can't think of anybody who had a bad day at the office.

Luke Sheriff and Kai Hortsmann were excellent and put in tireless performances, Simon Keogh looked very sharpe basically picking up where he left off last season.

Joe Mbu looked very good going forward but missed a couple of tackles early on, he looks a good signing and Adrian Jarvis was on song with his conversions.

So in all a great couple of days Rugby. The weather was superb, I'm sure some of the players would disagree.

Shame the attendance wasn't higher but those who went seemed to have a great time.
