Quins Ladies fail to convert pressure into points
By The Prof January 19 2004
It was perfect weather for the top of the table clash between second placed Quins Ladies and table toppers Chesham Ladies at Old Isleworthians.
Chesham started the game with the wind and slope in their favour. Again and again the Quins forwards mauled the ball forward before feeding the likes of Burbidge, Brazier-Kobus, Bullingham, Dudley and Clancy who made good yards through the centre but Chesham’s last ditch defence held strong.

The first clear cut chance to score came, Quins’ forwards had driven the ball up the right, the ball was then spun left where Quins had a two man overlap but a Chesham centre slapped the ball down, one would have thought a penalty was in order but in his wisdom Mr Paul decided a scrum was all that the infringement warranted – shame that.

It wasn’t long before the large Quins support had something to cheer about, Gallagher took the ball under a lot of pressure at the front of the lineout and Tracey fed Burbidge who took the ball at pace and cut through to score. She narrowly failed to convert her own try. 5-0, 25 minutes.

Quins came close to scoring on a number of occasions and should have been streets ahead by the time Burbidge went off with a leg injury which necessitated a rearrangement of the Quins backs.

Chesham were still under pressure at the beginning of the second half but they drew even with a breakaway try by their outside centre who ran 40m round the Quins defence to score, conversion missed, 5-5, 65 minutes.

The Quins pack drove closer and closer to the line, it looked like they would score to snatch a well deserved victory but the referee spotted an infringement and blew for full time. Harlequin Ladies 5 – Chesham Ladies 5.

It was a shame that Quins couldn’t make the most of the territory and possession that they had for much of the game, next week they have another important game away to their rivals Plymouth Albion.

Congratulations to Saskia Brazier-Kobus, Laura Coy and Laura Quinn who have made the U18 regional squad.
